CS183 Software Design Dr. Eric A. Durant Web: courses/cs183 (coming soon) Office: CC43 (enter through CC27) Phone: Textbooks Required (same as CS-182 book) C++ How to Program, Introducing Object- Oriented Design with the UML, 3rd Ed., by Harvey M. Deitel and Paul J. Deitel, Prentice-Hall, Grading Criteria Quizzes/homework (approximately weekly) Midterm (wk. 4, Wed 6/12/2002) Lab Reports Final (TBA) Total 20% 20% 30% 30% 100% by Eric A. Durant, Ph.D. 1
Class Notes The grading formula applies only to those students who have successfully met the objectives of this course. There is a 10% per business day late penalty for all written work and no work will be accepted more than one week late for credit. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped. Students are encouraged to discuss homework and programming assignments, however, each student is responsible for doing and turning in their own work. Unless otherwise noted the laboratory sessions for this course are open and attendance is not required. All software reports should contain a time log summary. 4 Course Objectives 1. understand the rationale for object-oriented design and programming 2. understand data abstraction and abstract data types 3. be familiar with UML class notation and use cases 4. understand and be able to apply pointers and dynamic objects 5. understand and be able to apply STL iterators 6. be familiar with composition, inheritance, polymorphism, and C++ templates 7. be able to design and implement simple C++ classes and class libraries 8. be able to design small software systems using classification and use cases 9. be able to document the design and implementation of small software systems 10. be able to work in a team to create a small software system 5 The vector Revisited Smart array Storage is in consecutive memory locations vector start Location = start + index*size Very little storage overhead Only need the start and object size 0 1 n by Eric A. Durant, Ph.D. 2
Another Storage Paradigm Arrange data in non-contiguous blocks Link them together to create order Called a linked list Basic storage cell Stored Object Link to Previous Cell Link to Next Cell 7 Linked List Main List Cell Size First Last 8 Linked Lists in C++ (STL) Very similar to the vector User controlled data type is stored Syntax #include <list> using namespace std; list<type> NAME; by Eric A. Durant, Ph.D. 3
List Operations (1) Adding elements push_back At the end push_front At the beginning insert Anywhere Removing an element pop_back From the end pop_front From the beginning erase, remove - Anywhere 10 List Operations (2) Information accessors/inspectors size How many? empty Are there none? Modification sort NOT part of algorithm reverse change the order 11 lists vs. vectors Advantages Flexible storage Grows easier Ultimately more data can be stored Disadvantages O(n) access time Loss of indexing Storage overhead is higher by Eric A. Durant, Ph.D. 4
Iterators A mechanism for sequentially accessing STL containers More important for list than vector Automatically included as part of the container Helps describe the next and previous links 13 Iterator Notation Declaration list<type>::iterator NAME; Operators * Access data element (dereferencing) ++,-- Advance or retreat in the list ==,!= Comparison NOTE: No < or > 14 Iterator Example Display all the elements in a list #include <list> using namespace std; First in the list list<int> my; for (list<int>::iterator iter=my.begin(); iter!= my.end(); ++iter) cout << *iter << endl; One past the end by Eric A. Durant, Ph.D. 5
Iterators in a Linked List Main List Cell Size.begin() First Last.end() 16 Iterator Variations Standard iterators can be used to change a list *iter = newvalue; Special iterators for const lists list<type>::const_iterator citer; Reverse iterators list<type>::reverse_iterator riter; list<type>::const_reverse_iterator criter; 17 More on Reverse Iterators For going from end to beginning ++ Retreats -- Advances Bounds rbegin() Last rend() One before the first by Eric A. Durant, Ph.D. 6
Other iterator Member Functions These member functions need iterators insert Where to insert erase Which one to erase find Locate the item that was found Iterators also apply to vectors Usage is the same vector<type>::iterator NAME; 19 Iterator Example (1) Our version of the find member function list<int>::iterator find(list<int>& data, int value) { list<int>::iterator retiter = data.end(); list<int>::iterator iter=data.begin(); 20 Iterator Example (2) } while (iter!= data.end()) { if (*iter == value) { retiter = iter; break; } else ++iter; } return retiter; Why not const? by Eric A. Durant, Ph.D. 7
