1 CSE 4342/ 5343 Lab 1: Introduction Objectives: Familiarize with the lab equipments. Login to the embedded lab network and locate shared files for the lab. Write a sample program using Intel compiler. Run C/ C++ programs under the Gemini board. Create and execute C/ C++ programs: Intel compiler is used to compile and build C/ C++ program either by using the "icl" command line instruction or through the Visual Studio. A. Command line 1. Use any editor to write a C/ C++ program. 2. From the command line type and execute the following command icl example1.c B. Visual C++ 1. Start the Visual Studio From file menu select New Project. 3. In the New Project window from the Project Types expand the Visual C++ list then select General. Under Templates select Empty Project. See figure 1 Figure 1: Select New Project template 1
2 4. In the Name text box write the project's name (i.e. project1), and in the location text box enter the location where you want to save your project's file. (Save your project in your Z: drive), then hit the OK button (Figure 2). Figure 2: Project's name and location selection 2
3 5. Now Project 1 is created and the project tree is as in figure 3. Figure 3: Project Tree 6. Create a C/ C++ file: From the project tree, right click on the project's name, from the menu select Add New Item Figure 4: Add new item menu 3
4 7. In the Add New Item window under Categories expand Visual C++ then select Code. Under Templates select C++ File (.cpp). Figure 5: File Template 4
5 8. In Name text box enter a file name (i.e. example1) 9. Enter the C code shown in figure 7. Figure 6: C++ file name Figure 7: example1.cpp Code 5
6 10. In steps 1-9 a Microsoft Visual C++ project was created. To create an Intel C++ project: from Project menu select Convert to use Intel C++ Project System. When a confirmation window appears click Yes button to accept the conversion process. Figure 8: Convert Visual C++ project to Intel C++ project Figure 9: Project conversion confirmation 6
7 11. The project is now converted to Intel C++ project and is ready now to run build solution from the build menu to compile, link and generate an executable module for the project. Figure 10: Build Solution option 12. You can run the program by selecting the Start without Debugging (or Start Debugging) command from the Debug menu, where an output window will appear as in figure 11. 8 13. To run the executable file in a PC other than the one used to create and build the project you may need to disable the CRT (C Run-time library) then rebuild the project. To disable CRT option, from the Project menu select Project properties. Figure 12: Project Properties command 8
9 14. In the Project Properties Pages window expand the Configuration Properties then select General. Figure 13: Project Properties window 15. In the right hand side of the window locate Minimize CRT Use in ATL then open the drop list and select Yes. Click OK Button then build the project again. Figure 14: CRT 9
10 16. Go to your Z: drive open the project folder, open the Debug folder locate the.exe file and copy it to a removable memory device. In case a Release version of the project was created, the.exe file of the project will be found under the Release folder. 17. Copy the.exe file from the removable memory device and paste in the hard disk of the destination PC where you want to run the program. 10

12 2. From the Project menu select Project properties. In the Project Properties Pages window expand the C/ C++ tree then select Language, in the right hand side of the window locate OpenMP Support. Figure 15: OpenMP support entery 12
13 3. Open the drop list and select Generate Parallel Code (/openmp, equiv. to /Qopenmp). Click OK Button. Figure 16: OpenMP support options 4. From build menu select Build Solution to build the project again. 13
