3 SEMESTER - VI PAPER - I EL Analog & Digital Communications Unit 1: Basics of wave propagation Ionosphere, its formation, wave propagation through ionosphere, problems and numerical exercises related to ionosphere, skip distance, maximum usable frequency as a function of electron density. Effects of day and night on electron density variations. Ground wave propagation, effect of earth in ground wave propagation. Space wave propagation, fading of signal due to propagation, Tropospheric propagation. Unit 2: Amplitude Modulation Amplitude modulation, modulation Index, power in am A.M. wave, linear and square law modulation techniques, qualitative working of modulation circuits. Numerical problems related to modulation index, side band power upon center frequency power, channel band requirement, etc. Unit 3: Frequency modulation FM, modulation index, frequency spectrum of frequency modulated wave, direct and indirect methods of frequency modulation. Pre-emphasis and De-emphasis. Numerical problems related to modulation index, side band power upon center frequency power, channel band requirement, etc. Unit 4: Demodulation Amplitude Demodulation: linear diode detection, choice of RC. Frequency demodulation: Foster Sheelay and phase locked loop. Numerical problems related to AM & FM demodulation.
