1 Objective.0 Understand Numbering Systems C O M P U T E R P R O G R A M M I N G I Number Systems Number systems we will talk about: Decimal (Base 0 ) Binary (Base ) Hexadecimal (Base 6 )

2 Decimal The number system we use in math and in life. 3 Base 0: ten one digit numbers: 0,,,3,,5,6,7,, After 9 comes 0 (the first two digit number) of course. 0 = 00 Base squared = 00 Decimal What can we say about the decimal system? It is our day to day number system The Decimal system has 0 digits; values are from 0 to

7 Example Binary Answers Figure out the following numbers in binary: Dec Binary (Answer) Hexadecimal Hex is Base 6 There are fifteen one digit numbers: 0,,,3,,5,6,7,,9,A,B,C,D,E,F What comes after F? Remember our rule: 0 =00 (6 =56 in decimal) This works in Hex as it does for ANY number system. 7

8 Hexadecimal 5 Contains 6 digits starting with 0-9 & A-F containing the values from 0 5. Hex is only bits long and its A = 0 A = 6 highest value is F in Hex or B = B = 7 5 in decimal or in binary. 9 Hexadecimal Think if you had 3 hands. You would have 5 fingers right? That is what hex has! So after 9 comes A (0), B (), C (), D (3), E () and F (5) Let try our example again in Hex. 7 Another Conversion to Hexadecimal Figure out the following Decimal numbers to Hex: Decimal Ask How many of 56 can come out of 56 (our decimal number)? 0. Ask How many of 6 can come out of 56? 3 (3 * 6 = with left over) Put the 3 in the 6 s spot 3. Ask How many of can come out of (the left over)? with 0 left over 9
