31 Part - Repairs 3
32 Cleaning eneral During indoor use, the only cleaning required should be a regular wipe over with a lint-free cloth. Dirt accumulated during storage may be removed using a semi-stiff brush. Particular attention should be paid to the leg clamps and the tripod mounting face. Use out-of-doors under adverse conditions will require special attention. Salt spray should be washed off with fresh water at the earliest opportunity. Sand and dirt acts as an abrasive and should be removed using a semi-stiff brush or vacuum cleaner. NOTE: Use only detergent-based cleaners. DO NOT use solvent- or oil-based cleaners, abrasives or wire brushes to remove accumulations of dirt, as these damage the protective surfaces. Cleaning clamp sleeves 3 The leg clamps are fitted with removable clamp sleeves. In the event that sand, dirt or other contaminants have entered the clamp the sleeves may be removed for cleaning, as follows. NOTE: The illustration shows a top clamp. Other leg clamps are of similar construction. 3. Remove any payload from the tripod. 3. Release the leg clamp. 3.3 rip the knob () and remove the retaining screw (4). 3.4 Unscrew the knob () until the clamp plate (3) and spherical clamp nut (5) can be removed from the clamp housing (6). 3.5 Rotate the clamp sleeves (7) inwards so that the lugs on the sleeves line up with the cut-outs in the clamp housing (6). 3.6 Slide the clamp sleeves up the tripod legs until they are clear of the clamp housing. 3.7 Using a semi-stiff brush or vacuum cleaner, remove any dirt from the faces of the clamp sleeves and the inside of the clamp housing. WARNIN!: Do not attempt to remove the clamp sleeves from the tripod legs. If a clamp sleeve is damaged it should be replaced by qualified personnel. 3.8 Refit the clamp sleeves by aligning the lugs on the sleeves (7) with the cut-outs in the clamp housing (6) and sliding them down the legs. 3.9 Rotate the clamp sleeves outwards so that the lugs on the sleeves locate in the cut-outs in the clamp housing. 3.0 Position the clamp plate (3) in the clamp housing (6), ensuring the lugs on the clamp sleeves (7) are correctly located. 3
33 3. Position the spherical clamp nut (5) in the clamp plate (3), ensuring that the curved face of the nut is towards the clamp plate. 3. Screw the knob () into the spherical clamp nut (5) until the clamp is finger-tight. 3.3 Fit the retaining screw (4), using Loctite. (7) (6) () (5) () (4) (3) 33
34 Replacing clamp sleeves The leg clamps are fitted with removable clamp sleeves. They may be replaced as follows. NOTE: The illustration shows a top clamp. The clamps are handed and specific to top and bottom positions, as follows: Clamp sleeve, upper, right hand Clamp sleeve, upper, left hand Clamp sleeve, lower, right hand Clamp sleeve, lower, left hand Remove any payload from the tripod.. Release the leg clamp..3 rip the knob () and remove the retaining screw (4)..4 Unscrew the knob () until the clamp plate (3) and spherical clamp nut (5) can be removed from the clamp housing (6)..5 Rotate the clamp sleeves (7) inwards so that the lugs on the sleeves line up with the cut-outs in the clamp housing (6)..6 Slide the clamp sleeves up the tripod legs until they are clear of the clamp housing. WARNIN!: Ensure the clamp sleeve and/or tools do not scratch the leg during removal. It is possible that the clamp sleeve will snap during removal..7 Carefully prise open the clamp sleeve and pull off the leg. WARNIN!: Ensure the correct clamp is installed in the appropriate position. The clamps are handed and specific to top and bottom positions. Ensure the clamp sleeve and/or tools do not scratch the leg during installation.8 Immerse each new clamp sleeve in boiling water for thirty seconds..9 Carefully prise open the clamp sleeve and push onto the leg.0 Align the lugs on the sleeves (7) with the cut-outs in the clamp housing (6) and sliding them down the legs.. Rotate the clamp sleeves outwards so that the lugs on the sleeves locate in the cut-outs in the clamp housing.. Position the clamp plate (3) in the clamp housing (6), ensuring the lugs on the clamp sleeves (7) are correctly located..3 Position the spherical clamp nut (5) in the clamp plate (3), ensuring that the curved face of the nut is towards the clamp plate..4 Screw the knob () into the spherical clamp nut (5) until the clamp is finger-tight. 34

36 Replacing and overhauling tripod legs Introduction The legs are secured in the bowl assembly by pivot clamp plates. Each clamp plate is secured by a single screw. The pinned and glued construction of the leg precludes any dismantling beyond that detailed here. NOTE: Illustrations and instructions are provided for a single-stage leg. Two-stage leg lower clamp components are similar. Consumables 3 The following consumables will be required: Loctite (Vinten Part No. Z00-06) Loctite 638 (Vinten Part No. Z00-058) rease, white Chesterton (Vinten Part No. Z50-05) rease, Easyrun 50 (Vinten Part No. Z50-08) Replacement 4 Remove the tripod leg as follows: 4. If fitted, disconnect the mid-level spreader () from the leg (3) by unscrewing the attachment screw (). 4. Remove two screws (4) securing two leg pivot clamp plates (5) to the top plate (6). 4.3 Pull off the tripod leg. 5 Install the tripod leg as follows: 5. Position the leg (3) in the top plate (6). NOTE: Ensure leg pivot clamps (5) are oriented as shown, with the longer end clamping the pivot. 5. Install two leg pivot clamp plates (5) and secure with screw (4), using Loctite. 5.3 Secure the mid-level spreader () to the leg (3) with the attachment screw (). 36

38 Overhaul 6 Dismantle the leg as follows: 6. Remove the leg from the tripod (Para 4). 6. Release the leg clamp. 6.3 rip the knob () and remove the retaining screw (4). 6.4 Unscrew the knob () until the clamp plate () and spherical clamp nut (3) can be removed from the clamp housing. 6.5 Rotate the clamp sleeves ()() inwards so that the lugs on the sleeves line up with the cut-outs in the clamp housing. 6.6 Slide the clamp sleeves up the legs until they are clear of the clamp housing. If required, remove the clamp sleeves from the legs (See Replacing clamp sleeves on page 34). 6.7 Pull the clamp knob () and associated components out of the clamp housing. 6.8 Remove the clamp spacer (3), two thrust washers () and needle roller thrust bearing (9) from the clamp knob shaft. The knob spigot is secured to the clamp knob with Loctite 638. NOTE: The clamp spring assembly is lubricated with Easyrun 50 grease, which will stain skin and clothing. 6.9 Remove the circlip (8) from the clamp housing and extract the components of the clamp spring assembly (thrust washer (7), six disc springs (6) and thrust washer (5)). Note orientation of disc springs (6). 6.0 Remove the O-ring (4) from the clamp housing. 6. In the case of a two-stage leg, repeat this procedure for the remaining leg clamp. 6. Clean and degrease all clamp components. 6.3 At the swivel foot, push the swivel foot release plunger (6) down as far as possible and pull the swivel foot assembly (0) out of the leg. Remove the swivel foot release plunger (6) and spring (7) from the leg. 6.4 Note orientation and remove the screws (5) securing the leg clip (8) and leg clip retainers (4) to the leg. 6.5 If fitted, remove the two shoulder screws (5) securing the handle (3) to the leg pivot (). 6.6 If required, drive out the leg pivot (), which is retained with Loctite

40 7 Assemble the leg as follows: 7. If removed, install the leg pivot () and secure with Loctite If appropriate, secure the handle (3) to the leg pivot () with the two shoulder screws (5), using Loctite. 7.3 If removed, install the clamp sleeves ()() on the leg (See Replacing clamp sleeves on page 34) 7.4 Install the leg clip (8) and two leg clip retainers (4) on the leg in the orientation noted during dismantling. Secure with two screws (5). 7.5 Lubricate the swivel foot release spring (7) with white Chesterton grease and install the spring and plunger (6) in the leg. 7.6 Lubricate the swivel foot assembly shaft (0) with white Chesterton grease. Push the swivel foot release plunger (6) down as far as possible, then push the swivel foot assembly (0) into position. Release the plunger to lock the swivel foot assembly in position. 7.7 Lightly lubricate the O-ring (4) with white Chesterton grease and install in the clamp housing. NOTE: Easyrun 50 grease will stain skin and clothing. 7.8 Lightly lubricate the faces of the disc springs (6) and thrust washers (5)(7) with Easyrun 50 grease. NOTE: Ensure the disc springs (6) are oriented and nested as shown. 7.9 Position a thrust washer (5), six disc springs (6) (oriented as shown), a thrust washer (7) and a circlip (8) in the clamp housing. 7.0 Install a 9/30 mm washer on the circlip and pass a suitable nut and bolt (and washers as necessary) through the clamp housing. Slowly tighten the nut and bolt, compressing the disc springs, until the circlip clicks into place. Remove the nut, bolt and washers. 7. If removed, secure the knob spigot (0) to the clamp knob () with Loctite Lightly lubricate the faces of two thrust washers () and needle roller thrust bearing (9) with white Chesterton grease and install on the clamp knob shaft (). 7.3 Install the assembled clamp knob in the clamp housing. 7.4 Align the lugs on the clamp sleeves ()() with the cut-outs in the clamp housing and slide them down the legs. 7.5 Rotate the clamp sleeves outwards so that the lugs on the sleeves locate in the cut-outs in the clamp housing. 7.6 Position the clamp plate () in the clamp housing, ensuring the lugs on the clamp sleeves are correctly located. 40
41 7.7 Lightly lubricate the thread of the spherical clamp nut (3) with white Chesterton grease. Position the nut in the clamp plate (), ensuring that the curved face of the nut is towards the clamp plate. 7.8 Screw the clamp knob () into the spherical clamp nut until the clamp is finger-tight. 7.9 Fit the retaining screw (4), using Loctite. 7.0 In the case of a two-stage leg, repeat this procedure for the remaining leg clamp. 7. Refit the leg on the tripod (Para 5). 4
