Load Frames 5590-HVL series load frames are available in standard capacities ranging from 100 kn to 3,000 kn (22,000 lbs to 600,000 lbs). These hydraulically powered load frames incorporate a dual test space design allowing both tension and compression testing to be performed without the need to remove fixtures from the load frame. 3 Learn more at: Crossheads Standard 5590-HVL features include a manually adustable tension crosshead which can be positioned along two chrome plated notch columns and a motorized lower crosshead to permit maximum flexibility in test space configurations. The crossheads are configured with in-head wedge action grip pockets for tension testing. Open front crossheads and hydraulic actuation of grip aws are available as options. Silent Pumps The 5590-HVL series testing systems include our new hydraulic power units designed for reduced heat and noise generation. HVL pumping units are designed to be located in the laboratory with a noise output level of 60dBA or less in the idling mode. The pumps operating pressure is variable staring at low idle pressures and increasing as the system requires greater pressure during the test. This proprietary design allows for ultra responsive control during the test and a dramatic reduction in noise and heat generation. A second component of the 5500 electronics package is the user control panel. This panel provides the immediacy, tactile feedback and constancy that are paramount in system user interface design. Load Cell Technology The 5590-HVL load frame uses strain gage load cell technology to measure the force being applied to the specimen. The load cell is located under the system table and is used to directly measure both tensile and compressive forces. Unlike systems which incorporate a pressure transducer to measure force, the 5590-HVL series does not require special systems to minimize frictional effects, to offset the weight of hydraulic oil in the cylinder and to ensure that the piston is not in contact with the cylinder bottom at the start of a test. These special systems require a number of additional parts leading to a more complicated design. The 5590-HVL series deign reduces part count leading to a load frame that is easy to maintain for decades HVL series pumping units are available with manual control of system loading and unloading or closed-loop servo control of position, load, stress and strain increasing test efficiency and consistency. Electronics and User Interface The 5590-HVL series is integrated with Instron s 5500 electronics which use advanced DSP technology to ensure fast response, high accuracy and with thousands of systems installed, the 5500 has proven to offer exceptional reliability. This technology provides the high speed processing power necessary to handle all machine control, data acquisition, limit checking and event detection tasks while freeing up the computer to act as the user interface and data storage medium HVL series 5500 electronics have a modular design allowing easily interchanged options such as signal conditioners, multi-channel data acquisition and analog output modules. 4 5590-HVL Series Options Semi-Open and Fully Open Crossheads Open crosshead designs allow for easier loading and removal of samples from the grip pockets and significantly increased test throughput. Semi-open crossheads are available on systems of 600 kn (135,000 lbs) capacity through 3,000 kn (600,000 lbs). Fully-open front crossheads are available on load frames from 100 kn (22,000 lbs) through 600 kn (135,000) capacity. The fully open front design is strongly recommended for testing wire. Grip Actuation The gripping process may be further simplified by adding hydraulic grip actuation in place of the standard rack and pinion type grip operation. Hydraulic actuators provide pressure to raise and lower the grip faces in the crosshead wedge pockets. Grip open and close actions are performed at the touch of a button ensuring more efficient test operation and reducing operator fatigue. The hydraulic grip option is available on all 5590-HVL series frames. Manual lever type grips are also available for 5590-HVL models of 100 kn (22,000 lbs) through 300 kn (67,000 lbs) capacity. Safety Guards Safety guards are available on all 5590-HVL series models and provide access to the test space from the font and rear of the load frame. System Configurations The complete 5590-HVL system offers a great deal of flexibility to minimize floor space, but yet provide a comfortable working environment. The load frame and control system may be placed in a linear configuration or an L shape. Consoles are available to enclose the pumping unit and provide a table top work space for the system controller, personal computer and printer. Alternatively, you may elect to place the pump in a different room and use a computer table for the controller and system computer. 5 User Interface Designed for Materials Testing As good as the Microsoft Windows interface is, it was not designed for materials testing. By combining a user control panel with a software console, the 5590-HVL system provides the optimum in real-time and post test flexibility. It incorporates many years of testing experience in all types of applications, to give you a tailored, easy to use system HVL User Control Panel The mouse and keyboard are very good input devices for many software applications such as word processing and spreadsheets. However, materials testing instruments require more. The 5590-HVL user control panel provides instant access to the most widely used materials testing functions, including start and stop, channel zero, load/unload and reset gage length. 6 Advanced Control Electronics for High Accuracy and Exceptional Reliability The 5500 electronics feature advanced designs that provide fast response, high accuracy and exceptional reliability. A dedicated controller provides accurate point-to-point, high speed data communications with the system s computer without compromising data integrity. The 5500 controller assumes the burden of realtime control, error and event detection and limit checking, leaving the computer free to perform what it does best - acting as an input device, user interface and data storage medium. Exceptional Resolution 5500 Electronics are designed to process and control information efficiently and quickly through the use of a Digital Signal Processor (DSP). The DSP samples all measurement channels at 40 khz and provides high speed processing of signals with exceptional resolution. It also provides high fidelity closed-loop control with dedicated real time error and limit checking. The controller s firmware program is stored on the computer s hard disk and downloaded to the controller upon initial power up. Firmware control functions can therefore be updated quickly throughout the life of the system without changing hardware components and assures total compatibility with the software application program. 7 Data Integrity and Reliability Safety Flexibility Automatic transducer recognition, calibration and balancing, greatly speeds up the testing process and ensures consistent and accurate data. Maintenance time and costs are minimized and reliability is improved through the use of fewer components, board mounted connectors and high reliability components. If service is required, on-board diagnostics, a system service log and a data port for remote diagnostics and downloading via modem link, ensure rapid turn around. The advanced digital design allows synchronous data capture on all channels at up to 500 Hz. This means no data skew and the best possible fidelity even during the rapidly changing conditions seen during discontinuous yielding or specimen break. Data is stored to the hard disc of the computer during each test. This ensures that results are protected even in the event of a power failure. Safety critical functions are handled directly by the controller, independent of the computer. This ensures the fastest possible response to error conditions and limit triggers. The controller checks for transducer disconnection during the test and stops the system loading if this occurs. If the computer is shut down or fails, the frame automatically switches to standby mode. Load transducers are automatically protected from overload at 110% of the full-scale value. In addition, user definable limits may be set within the software. Series 5500 systems incorporate a specimen protect feature which allows the user to specify a load value above which the system cannot be driven. This is especially useful when setting up delicate or expensive specimens. It can also be used to remove slack in the load train commonly found when using shoulder ended specimens or testing fasteners. You can further enhance the control and measurement capabilities of a basic system by choosing from a number of optional modules: Up to two additional conditioner boards to accommodate additional transducers A PC-based 16 channel data acquisition system for additional multiple inputs from devices such as conditioned strain gages and LVDTs An input/output board to provide four ±10 volt analog outputs for connection to recorders, plotters and oscilloscopes, four digital inputs for synchronization with external event detectors and four digital outputs for triggering external equipment. The TVL offers an economical solution for static tensile testing applications from 100 kn to 1000 kn (22,000 lbs to 220,000 lbs). VTL The model VTL load frame is designed for tensile testing of rebar, plate and angle. The test space is conveniently located at operator level for easy loading of heavy samples. m RD The model RD compression testing machine is an ultra stiff load frame designed for compression testing up to 4,500 kn (1,000,000 lbs).
