7 APPENDIX B - Setting up Cameras & Speedlites for Manual Shooting To use the PE16 Radio Trigger with a Speedlite or several speedlites (extra receivers required), you will need to shoot in Manual mode and set up the Camera and each Speedlite individually. This is particularly desirable if you wish to create a series of repeat shots of identical exposure, eliminating shot to shot exposure variations - when shooting event pictures for example. Speedlights set to manual mode perform exactly like other manual flash units you might find in a studio and their setup is the same, in that each unit has to be set up individually, preferably in conjunction with a Light Meter (we recommend the Sekonic L-308S) Manual Shooting is all about deciding what setting YOU want. SETTING UP - CAMERA 1. Decide what ISO you wish to use, the lower the ISO level, the greater the quality of the image, however, more flash power is required. ISO100 will produce excellent results, set your camera to the desired ISO level. 2. Set the Shutter speed to a value below or equal to 1/200sec. Shutter speed has very little effect on flash exposure as it is the Speedlite flash duration that controls things at this point. 3. Set your desired depth of field - a popular portrait setting is f8. SETTING UP - SPEEDLITE To achieve Shadow free pictures (for example) we must use 2 Speedlites identically placed either side of the subject, the same amount of light on the subject from each unit. Therefore each Speedlite must be setup identically. It is worthwhile getting to know the Aperture Settings and their relation to each other; Full f-stops are shown in Green. So in our example, where we want the camera to take pictures at f8, we need to set up each head at half that power ( 2 x flash at half desired power = desired power) which would be ONE stop from f8 = f5.6 (remember ONE stop doubles the amount of light). Each time you increase or decrease an f-stop (f8 for example) you double or halve the amount light. So Camera Setting at f8 - each Flash set up at f5.6 So Camera Setting at f5.6 - each Flash set up at f4 So Camera Setting at f4 - each Flash set up at f2.8 So now we know for our example that each head needs to be setup to emit f5.6's worth of light as measured at the subject (this is the point that needs to be correct - it s what we are photographing after all). To do this accurately, we need the use of a Light Meter (we recommend the Sekonic L-308S), put the meter into flash mode. Repeat this exercise for each Flash (ensuring the other flash is switched off) 1. Using either an assistant to press the test button on the Trigger Button on the Radio Trigger or the subject to hold the meter, Fire the Flash and take a reading on your meter (as per the Meter s flash instructions). 2. If the Meter records a result higher than 5.6 then turn the Flash s power down via the Power Dial/Buttons and vice versa if the reading is too low. 3. Repeat this exercise until f5.6 exactly is achieved. 4. Switch off the Flash and repeat the exercise with the other Flash. 5. When that flash is correctly set up, switch the other head back on For single Speedlite setup s use the same technique as above but do not halve the light i.e. in the example above set the Flash up for f8 instead of f5.6 Some Speedlites (Canon 580EX MKII for example) have extra features built in such as a flash exposure sensor that may be used in single flash setups - consult your flash manual for the use of these features.

8 APPENDIX C - External Resources There is huge library of information available on the internet on how to set up your flashes, techniques for creating stunning shots etc etc. The collective term for this type of photography is STROBIST has many useful tutorial videos available A Google search will pull up many, many articles. There is even a dedicated website that has been primarily responsible for the expansion of this area of Photography - which has many resources, articles, tutorials and links to other sites of interest.
