3 In the US, the fragmented health care system is a fundamental contributor to poor performance and patient experience Health care providers Insurers Life sciences companies Third-party vendors Patients/ consumers Patient care is uncoordinated across providers and care settings fostering a frustrating patient experience. There exists a lack of clear accountability for a patient across multiple providers, leading to medical errors, waste and duplication. Patients lack access to information around their own medical records and providers performance. The absence of quality improvement infrastructure and integrated clinical information systems fosters poor overall quality of care. According to a May 2017 Gallup poll, Americans rank the health care system as the #1 problem the US is facing 1 1

As consumers, millennials seek: Greater transparency of costs and quality Accountability for results Better customer experience through a more retail-like, personal approach to delivering services New digital technologies are changing the way millennials interact with the health ecosystem
17 Digital health will provide the elderly with more healthy delivery options and increased engagement with providers The elderly face numerous unique health care challenges: High cost of health care: Out-of-pocket expenses are the greatest financial burden for Medicare recipients. Isolation: Many elderly are living alone or have families and support structure far away from their place of residence. Chronic disease management: Four out of five elderly suffer from at least one chronic disease, and this number will only be increasing. Digital health enables a cheaper way of consuming health care with low overhead for the providers Virtual medicine allows for increased access and helps providers check in on their patients more frequently Medical devices monitor patient status in real-time alerting to any changes Connected devices allow patients to understand how lifestyle affects their health, enabling them to adapt and modify accordingly mhealth apps help facilitate easy disease and drug intake tracking with analysis, reminders and notifications Compliance can be readily monitored and sent to the provider with updates Source:
18 Digital health will provide vulnerable populations with more equitable access to health care Vulnerable populations include the economically disadvantaged and racial and ethnic minorities Homeless Limited or no support Chronically ill and disabled Challenges: Limited access: Unstable lifestyle hinders stable patient provider relationship and opportunity for care Lack of engagement: Unaware of patient portals, mhealth apps and other technologies to foster access to health care Differing priorities: Health care needs are often put aside because of circumstances and lack of resources Government-subsidized phones allow for increased access to mhealth apps and information at a patients fingertips Health appointment notifications and alerts can be pushed directly to the patient Virtual health care allows patients to access specialty providers cost-effectively and easily Digital medical devices allow patients to be monitored remotely and treated remotely, with treatment information pushed directly to patients mobile devices
19 Integrated-care delivery via digital technology enables providers to more effectively address public health issues What is the opioid crisis? The opioid crisis is the largest drug crisis in modern American history More than 35,000 people died of opioid overdoses in 2015 An estimated 25 million Americans suffer daily from pain $79 billion in annual response cost and lost productivity Major causes Since the 1990s, opioids have been overprescribed as pain relievers; overprescription has become the norm Opioids are misconstrued as a miracle drug for pain relief, although they do not address the underlying causes of pain There is limited to no visibility for providers into previous/existing opioids prescribed to a patient Solution: Appriss Health has created software that enables providers to easily query and understand if a patient has been prescribed opioids, thus allowing for identification of addiction and informed treatment decisions. Solution Description Database software monitors opioid prescriptions in 40 states by querying patients past history and identifying trends Facilitates easy integration of opioid prescription histories into electronic health records Patient benefits: Physicians/pharmacists can select alternative treatments if patient is overprescribed (i.e., therapy or drug counseling) Comprehensive opioid tracking enables the right care at the right time with the right approach Source:
