2 Welcome to your BT Decor 1300 Corded Telephone 100 Name and number Directory for storing all your contacts. 4 Standard ringtones and 6 polyphonic ringtones. Handsfree operation for greater flexibility when on the phone. 6 6 Getting started Location You need to place your BT Decor 1300 within 3 metres of a telephone socket so that the cable will reach. Your BT Decor 1300 can be wall mounted, see Wall mounting your phone, on page 30. Inserting the batteries Battery low warning When the batteries are low and in need of replacing the display will show Low Battery. When the batteries are dead, the display will be blank. When the handset is lifted the display will show Replace Battery. Turn the phone over, and remove the battery compartment cover by pressing in on the plastic clip and lifting the cover off. Insert the 4 x AA batteries supplied, making sure to follow the polarity markings shown inside the battery compartment and replace the cover. WARNING When you change the batteries please ensure the phone is disconnected from the telephone line. P TE TB Mode

7 Getting started 7 Connecting the handset to the base Turn the phone over and connect the curly handset cord into the socket marked with the symbol. Turn the phone back over and position the handset on the receiver. Removing the base plinth (optional) Your BT Decor 1300 will come with the base plinth already attached. If you want to use your BT Decor 1300 on a flat surface such as a table or desk then we advise you to leave the plinth attached. If you prefer to wall-mount your BT Decor 1300, please refer to the instructions shown on page 30. If you want to remove the base plinth, turn the plinth lock switch on the underside of the phone to the unlock position and unclip. Connecting to the telephone line Connect the telephone line cord to the socket marked on the back of the base and plug the other end into the telephone wall socket. Remove the protective film from the display screen. Your BT Decor 1300 is now ready for use.

8 8 Getting to know your phone Corded telephone 3 Line Display When in standby the display shows the time and date. Handset Catch Turn the catch to use your phone in a wall-mounted position. Menu Press to access the settings menu. Press when viewing the list, directory or redial list to view the sub-menu list. Loudspeaker When using handsfree you can hear your caller over the base loudspeaker. Directory Use to store and dial up to 100 contact names and numbers. light Red calls light flashes to indicate an incoming call. In standby, it flashes to indicate you have new calls in the list. BT Decor 1300 Menu Redial button Press to move back to the previous display screen or press and hold to return to standby. Redial/Up button Press to access the redial list. Use to move through the menu, directory and list. /Down button Press to access the list. Use to move through the menu, directory and list. button Press to dial a displayed number. Press to move forward in the menu. Press to confirm a menu selection. R (Recall) button For use with a switchboard/pbx and BT Calling Features. Please contact your switchboard supplier for more information. For more information on BT s Calling Features please call Freefone Handsfree button Press to use your BT Decor 1300 in handsfree mode. When you are in handsfree mode, the green Handsfree light illuminates. Underneath your phone: Mode switch Use to change the dial mode. Volume buttons Use to increase or decrease the volume. Vol. Handsfree Vol. Microphone When using handsfree your voice is projected through the base microphone. 1571/Messages button 1 Press to automatically dial 1571 to easily access BT Answer 1571 or Call Minder. The green light flashes when you have new messages waiting on your network s answering service. Secrecy button Lets you talk to someone in the same room without the person you are calling hearing you. Red Secrecy light illuminates when secrecy is on. 1 To use the 1571 feature, you must subscribe to your network s answering service. Batteries must be installed to be able to use the 1571 button.

9 Using your phone 9 Making and ending calls Make a call 1. Lift the handset and wait for the dial tone. 2. Dial the telephone number. The number is displayed. During the call the duration of the call will be displayed. Call timer Your handset automatically times the duration of every external call. The call timer activates 5 seconds into a call and continues to display the time until 5 seconds after the call has ended. If your BT Decor 1300 finds an exact match in the Directory for the number you dialled, the name of the person you are calling will be displayed instead of the number. If the number you enter is more than 16 digits, only the last 16 digits will be displayed. Accessing the directory during a call Whilst on a call, you can access the directory to view, add, edit or delete entries. See the Directory section on page 16. Preparatory dialling Preparatory dialling lets you see the number on the display before it is dialled out. If the number you enter is more than 16 digits, only the last 16 digits will be displayed. 1. Enter the number first. If you make a mistake press to delete. 2. Lift the handset or press Handsfree or to dial. Press and hold pause in a number. to enter a

10 10 Using your phone End a call Replace the handset or press the Handsfree button. Receive a call When you receive a call, the telephone rings and the red calls light flashes. If you have subscribed to a Caller Display service: the caller s number will be displayed (if available). if your BT Decor 1300 finds an exact name/number match in the directory the caller s name will be displayed instead of the number. if you have assigned a VIP ring to a directory number you will hear the selected ring tone instead of the normal ring tone. in addition, if you have assigned mood lighting to the number calling, the display will light up in the selected backlight colour. Pick up the handset or press Handsfree to answer the call.

11 Using your phone 11 Handsfree mode Making a handsfree call In handsfree mode all communication is via the loudspeaker. 1. Press Handsfree. The green Handsfree light illuminates and you hear the dial tone. 2. Dial the telephone number. The number is displayed and dialled in handsfree mode. Switch to handsfree during a call During a call: 1. Press Handsfree. The green Handsfree light illuminates. Place the handset back on the cradle. Continue your conversation in handsfree mode. To switch back to using the handset at any time during the call, simply lift the handset. Adjusting the handsfree volume There are 5 volume levels to choose from. The default setting is level 3. Press to increase the volume or to decrease the volume. The display shows the selected volume level.

12 12 Using your phone Secrecy When on a call you can use the secrecy feature to talk to someone in the same room, without your caller hearing. To switch secrecy on and off 1. During a call, press and release the button. The is on. button will illuminate red to show that secrecy Your caller will be put on hold. You can now talk to someone in the room without your caller hearing you. 2. Press and release the button again to return to your caller. The red secrecy light will go out. Press and hold to exit the redial list and return to standby at any time. Redial You can redial any of the last 5 numbers called from the redial memory. If a redial number is stored in the directory and a name match is found, the name will be displayed as well as the number, see Directory, page 16.

13 Using your phone 13 Redial a number from the redial list 1. Press Redial. The last number called is displayed. 2. Press Redial or to scroll through the redial list. 3. To dial the number, lift the handset or press or. Or To exit the redial list without dialling, press return to standby. Handsfree to Numbers are only stored once in the redial list. If you ring the same number on more than one occasion, the most recent time you called will be shown at the top of the list and replace any previous occurrence of the number. Save a redial number to the directory 1. Press Redial. The last number called is displayed. 2. Press Redial or to scroll through the redial list to the number you want to save. 3. Press Menu. Save Number is displayed, press. 4. Enter Name is displayed, enter a name using the keypad and press. 5. Edit Number is displayed. If necessary, edit the number using to delete incorrect digits and enter new ones using the keypad. When you are happy with the number, press. 5. Entry Saved is displayed. 6. Press to return to standby. If you make a mistake, press to delete the last character/digit. For help with entering names, see page 16.

14 14 Using your phone Delete a redial number 1. Press Redial. The last number called is displayed. 2. Press Redial or to scroll through the redial list to the number you want to delete. 3. Press Menu. Save Number is displayed. 4. Press to display Delete Number and press. 5. Number Deleted is displayed. Press to return to standby. Delete the entire redial list 1. Press. The last number called is displayed. Redial 2. Press Menu. Save Number is displayed. 3. Press to display Delete All and press. Press to cancel and return to standby. 4. Delete All Are You Sure? is displayed. Press to confirm. Redial List Deleted is displayed. 6. Press to return to standby.

15 Using your phone 15 Dial mode There are 3 dial mode settings. Tone/Timed break (TB), Tone/Earth (TE) and Pulse/Earth (P). The default setting is Tone/Timed break (TB). Turn the phone over and move the Mode Switch to the position you want: P, TE or TB. Mode P TE TB

16 16 Directory Numbers stored without a name will be displayed before alphabetical entries. Press and hold to exit the directory and return to standby at any time. Directory full If you try to store a new entry and the directory is full, Directory Full will be displayed. You will need to delete entries before you can add new ones, see page 19. Entering names Use the keypad to enter the letters shown on the buttons, e.g. to store TOM: Press once to enter T. Press three times to enter O. Press once to enter M. Writing tips If you make a mistake, press to delete the last character/digit. To enter a space, press once. Press repeatedly to enter the following symbols & -., ' ( 1 If the next letter is on the same button that you have just pressed, wait until the cursor moves to the right before trying to enter it. You can store 100 names and telephone numbers in your BT Decor 1300 s directory. Names stored in the directory can be up to 16 characters and numbers up to 20 digits long. Directory entries are stored alphabetically. You can also assign directory entries with individual ringer melodies and coloured mood lighting. When you receive a call from one of these pre-selected numbers, instead of the normal ring you will hear the ring you have selected and the display will light up in the chosen colour. Store a directory entry 1. Press. If the directory is empty: Add New Entry is displayed, press. If there are already entries stored: The first alphabetical entry will be displayed. Press to display Add New Entry and press. 2. Enter the name for the entry using the keypad then press. 3. Enter the telephone number for the entry using the keypad then press. Entry Saved is displayed. 4. Press and hold to return to standby. Menu

17 Directory 17 View/dial a directory entry 1. Press, then Redial or to scroll to the directory entry you want. Or, to search alphabetically: Enter the first letter of the name you want e.g. for Emma, press twice to display names beginning with E, then scroll using Redial or to the name you want. 2. Press to dial the displayed entry. Or Press to return to standby. Insert a pause in a number At the point where you want a pause, press and hold until P appears in the display. Edit a directory entry 1. Press. The first alphabetical entry will be displayed. 2. Press Redial or to scroll to the directory entry you want. 3. Press Menu, Add New Entry is displayed. 4. Press to display Edit Entry and press. 5. Edit the name using the Redial or buttons to move the cursor through the letters of the name, the button to delete incorrect letters and the keypad to enter new letters. When the name is correct press.

18 18 Directory 6. Edit the number using the Redial or buttons to move the cursor through the number, the button to delete incorrect digits and the keypad to enter new digits. When the number is correct press. 7. Entry Saved is displayed. Press to return to standby. Assign a ringer melody to a directory entry Normal Melody is the default melody setting, i.e. the ringer melody you have set as your main ringer melody, see page 21. There are 4 standard melodies and 6 polyphonic ringer melodies to select from. You can assign an individual ringer melody to a directory number. When you receive an incoming call from the assigned number, just by hearing the ringer melody you will be able to tell who is calling. 1. Press. The first alphabetical entry will be displayed. 2. Press Redial or to scroll to the directory entry you want. 3. Press Menu, Add New Entry is displayed. 4. Press to display Set Melody and press. 5. The current melody setting is displayed, use the Redial and buttons to select the ringer melody you want and press. 6. Saved is displayed. Press to return to standby.

19 Directory 19 Assign mood lighting to a directory entry You can assign mood lighting to a directory number so that when you receive an incoming call from that number, the display on your BT Decor 1300 will light up in the selected colour. The colours you can choose from are Normal Colour, Green, Orange and Red. Normal Colour is the default backlight colour setting, see page Press. The first alphabetical entry will be displayed. 2. Press Redial or to scroll to the directory entry you want. 3. Press Menu, Add New Entry is displayed. 4. Press to display Mood Lighting and press. 5. The current setting is displayed, use the Redial and buttons to select the colour you want and press. 6. Saved is displayed. Press to return to standby. Delete a directory entry 1. Press. The first alphabetical entry will be displayed. 2. Press Redial or to scroll to the directory entry you want. 3. Press Menu, Add New Entry is displayed.

20 20 Directory 4. Press to display Delete Entry and press. 5. Delete Entry Are You Sure? is displayed, press to confirm. 6. Entry Deleted is displayed. 7. Press to return to standby. Delete the entire directory 1. Press. The first alphabetical entry will be displayed. 2. Press Redial or to scroll to any of the directory entries. 3. Press Menu, Add New Entry is displayed. 4. Press to display Delete All and press. 5. Delete All Are You Sure? is displayed, press to confirm. 6. All Deleted is displayed. 7. Press to return to standby.

21 Settings menu 21 Ringer volume There are 3 volume settings to choose from: High, Low or Ringer Off. If Ringer Off is selected, when in standby, the display will show Ringer Off. 1. Press Menu. Ringer Volume is displayed, press to select. 2. The current volume setting is displayed. Press Redial or to change the volume level. On each button press you will hear an example ring. 3. With the volume you want displayed, press to confirm. Saved is displayed. 4. Press to return to standby. The default setting is High. If the ringer is set to OFF, the call light will still flash to indicate when someone is calling you. Ringer melody There are 4 standard and 6 polyphonic ringer melodies to choose from. The default setting is Standard Melody Press Menu. Ringer Volume is displayed. 2. Press to display Ringer Melody, press to select. 3. Press Redial or to hear and display each melody. 4. With the melody you want displayed, press to confirm. Saved is displayed. 5. Press to return to standby.

22 22 Settings menu Time and date You will need to set the correct time and date so they can be displayed correctly on the display. If you subscribe to a Caller Display service, the time and date will be set automatically on receipt of your first incoming call. The default time setting is The default date setting is 01/01. Your BT Decor 1300 uses the 24 hour clock. 1. Press Menu. Ringer Volume is displayed. 2. Press to display Set Time & Date, press to select. 3. The first digit of the time flashes. Use the keypad to enter the time, using 2 digits for the hour and 2 digits for the minutes, press to confirm. 4. The current date setting is displayed with the first digit flashing. Use the keypad to enter the date using 2 digits for the day and 2 digits for the month, press to confirm. Saved is displayed. 5. Press to return to standby.

23 Settings menu 23 Backlight colour There are 3 display backlight colours to choose from: Green, Orange and Red. The default setting is Green. 1. Press Menu. Ringer Volume is displayed. 2. Press to display Backlight Colour, press to select. 3. Press Redial or to select the colour you want and press to confirm. Saved is displayed. 4. Press to return to standby. Display contrast There are 7 display contrast levels to choose from. The default setting is Level Press Menu. Ringer Volume is displayed. 2. Press to display Display Contrast, press to select. 3. Press or to select the contrast level you want Redial and press to confirm. Saved is displayed. 4. Press to return to standby.

24 24 Caller Display IMPORTANT To use Caller Display you must first subscribe to your network provider s Caller Display service. A quarterly fee may be payable. For more details on BT s Calling Features, call BT free on If you subscribe to a Caller Display service, your BT Decor 1300 s display shows who is calling (provided the number is not withheld, unavailable or is an international call). If you have stored a name to go with the number in the directory and an exact match is found, the name will be displayed instead. list The list contains the telephone numbers of the last 50 received calls. You can display, scroll through, dial and copy numbers in the list. If a call is received when the list is full, then the oldest entry will be deleted automatically to make room for the new call. New calls When you have new (unread) calls the light on the base flashes and the number of missed calls is shown on the display when in standby.

25 Caller Display 25 View the list 1. Press to go straight to the list and view the new calls. The light stops flashing. The details for the most recent call are displayed. The date and time the call was received are displayed together with the caller s number. New will be displayed if the call is new (unread). If the caller s details are stored in the directory and an exact match is found, the caller s name will be displayed as well as the number. 2. Scroll Redial or through the list. 3. Press to return to standby. Dial from the list 1. Press to view the list. 2. Scroll Redial or to the entry you want. 3. To dial the displayed number, lift the handset or press or Handsfree. Copy a number to the directory You can add a list number to your directory, either as a new entry or to an existing entry if the caller rings from a number which is not already stored. To exit the list and return to standby at any time, press. If the list is empty, List Empty will be displayed. Caller information is not available With some incoming calls, the telephone number of the caller is not available and cannot therefore be displayed. In this case your BT Decor 1300 provides you with some explanatory information: Unavailable The number is unavailable. No Number The caller has withheld their number. International International call. Payphone call is from a payphone. Ringback the call is from a number you set as a ringback number.

Scroll Redial or to the entry you want. 3. Press Menu. Save Number is displayed, press. 4. Enter Name is displayed. Enter a name using the keypad and press. 5. Edit Number is displayed. If necessary, edit the number using the keypad. (using Redial and to move through the number and to delete incorrect digits). When the number is correct, press. Entry Saved is displayed. 6. Press to return to standby. Delete a number from the list 1. Press to view the list. 2. Scroll Redial or to the entry you want. 3. Press Menu. Save Number is displayed, scroll to display Delete Call and press. 4. Call Deleted is displayed. Press to return to standby.

28 Voice mail indication The message waiting indicator is activated by a stuttered dial tone which you can hear when you pick up your phone. BT Calling Features, such as Call Diversion and Call Barring use a stuttered dial tone so therefore will cause the message waiting indicator to flash even if no messages have been left. IMPORTANT After an incoming call, or after lifting the handset, your BT Decor 1300 will check the line for any messages. You will experience at least a 2 minute delay before the message waiting indicator light flashes if messages have been left. If you have subscribed to BT Answer 1571 or Call Minder, your BT Decor 1300 will indicate when you have received a voice message by the flashing messages light. BT Answer 1571 and Call Minder are invisible answer machines located at your local exchange which will take messages when you are out, engaged on another call or on the Internet. To enable your BT Decor 1300 to let you know you have messages you must first subscribe to a BT messaging service: BT Answer 1571 is a basic answering service and is completely free of charge. To activate the service, dial Freefone For information on Call Minder, call BT on Freefone This is a chargeable service. To access your voice mail messages 1. Press. 2. Your BT Decor 1300 goes into handsfree mode and you will hear the telephone dialling out. After a few seconds you will be connected automatically to your voice mail service. Or

29 1571 Voice mail indication Lift the handset and wait for the dial tone. 2. Press. The number is displayed and you will hear the telephone dialling out. After a few seconds you will be connected automatically to your voice mail service.

30 30 Wall mounting 1. Revolve the handset catch to keep the handset in place when wall mounted. 1 2 IMPORTANT Before you wall mount, please check that: the wall can support the weight of the phone you are not drilling into any hidden wiring the telephone line cord will reach the telephone socket BT are not responsible for any damage/injury caused while attempting to wall mount your phone. 2. Remove the base plinth by turning the plinth lock switch on the underside of the phone to the unlock position and unclip. 3. Drill 2 holes with a 5mm drill for the screws provided, using the template on the back page. 4. Insert the wall plugs provided and then insert a screw into each hole. Leave a gap between the head of the screw and the wall (approx. 9mm). 5. Position the product onto the screws. 6. Drop down to secure into place.

31 Help 31 Phone does not ring Check that the telephone line cord is correctly connected. Check that the Ringer is not set to Off, see page 21. Your caller cannot hear you Is the red Secrecy light on? If so, secrecy is switched on. Press the button to speak to your caller again button does not work You must subscribe to BT s Call Minder or 1571 Service for the 1571 button to work. See page 28. Check that you have installed the batteries correctly. No display Check that the batteries are installed. If necessary, replace the batteries. Incoming caller s number is not displayed even though you have Caller Display Caller has to allow their number to be sent. It may have been withheld or be unavailable.

32 32 General information Safety information Only use the telephone line cord supplied with your BT Decor 1300, otherwise your telephone may not work correctly. Use only the recommended battery type (4 x AA alkaline). Never dispose of batteries in a fire. There is a serious risk of explosion and/or the release of highly toxic chemicals. Do not open the telephone (except to replace the batteries). Cleaning Simply clean your BT Decor 1300 with a damp (not wet) cloth, or an anti-static wipe. Never use household polish as this will damage the product. Never use a dry cloth as this may cause a static shock. Environmental Do not expose to direct sunlight. Do not submerge any part of your product in water and do not use it in damp or humid conditions, such as bathrooms. Do not expose your product to fire, explosive or other hazardous conditions.

33 General information 33 Product disposal instructions The symbol shown here and on the product means that the product is classed as Electrical or Electronic Equipment and should not be disposed with other household or commercial waste at the end of its working life. The Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive (2002/96/EC) has been put in place to recycle products using best available recovery and recycling techniques to minimise the impact on the environment, treat any hazardous substances and avoid the increasing landfill. Product disposal instructions for residential users When you have no further use for it, please remove any batteries and dispose of them and the product as per your local authority s recycling processes. For more information please contact your local authority or the retailer where the product was purchased. Product disposal instructions for business users Business users should contact their suppliers and check the terms and conditions of the purchase contract and ensure that this product is not mixed with other commercial waste for disposal.

34 34 General information Guarantee Your BT Decor 1300 is guaranteed for a period of 12 months from the date of purchase. Subject to the terms listed below the guarantee will provide for the repair of, or at BT s or its agent s discretion the option to replace the BT Decor 1300, or any component thereof, which is identified as faulty or below standard, or fails as a result of inferior workmanship or materials. Products over 28 days old from the date of purchase may be replaced with a refurbished or repaired product. The conditions of this guarantee are: The guarantee shall only apply to defects that occur within the 12 month guarantee period. Proof of purchase is provided. The equipment is returned to the point of purchase. This guarantee does not cover any faults or defects caused by accidents, misuse, fair wear and tear, neglect, tampering with the equipment, or any attempt at adjustment or repair other than by approved agents. This guarantee does not affect your statutory rights. Within the 12 month guarantee period: In the unlikely event of a defect occurring, please return the product, with the receipt, to the place of purchase.

35 General information 35 Outside of the 12 month guarantee period: If your product needs repair after the guarantee period has ended, the repair must meet the approval requirements for connection to the telephone network. We recommend that you contact BT s approved repair agent, Helpdesk Solutions on or a local qualified repairer. If you have to return your BT Decor 1300: Pack the unit securely, preferably in the original packaging. All parts must be returned. We cannot take responsibility for goods damaged in transit. Please obtain and keep proof of posting from the carrier. 36 36 General information Technical information How many telephones can you have? All items of telephone equipment have a Ringer Equivalence Number (REN), which is used to calculate the number of items which may be connected to any one telephone line. Your BT Decor 1300 has a REN of 1. A total REN of 4 is allowed, if the total REN of 4 is exceeded, the telephones may not ring. With different telephone types there is no guarantee of ringing, even when the REN is less than 4.
