Choosing Excellence: National Board Certification You re at the head of your class. Now go to the top of your profession.
The National Board Certification process is the best professional development experience I ve ever had. 2
National Board Certification is Recognition for accomplished teaching content knowledge and teaching pedagogy Advanced master teacher certification Voluntary Assessment based on national standards of accomplished teaching developed by teachers and other educators 3
National Board Certification can Validate your teaching practice Provide opportunities to advance your career Increase financial opportunities in many areas Contribute to Continuing Education Units (CEU) and re-certification requirements Receive 3 credits for completing the one-year program and 3 additional credits for passing Option to receive 6-9 graduate credits 4
# of NB Certified Teachers Over 110,000 in the United States Over 2,760 in Maryland 20 in Queen Anne s County plus 20 NB candidates who are currently toward certification 5
What National Board Certified Teachers do for your students Foster a deeper understanding of content Measurably improve your students learning and achievement Provide individualized instruction based on your students needs and strengths Help your students demonstrate knowledge through a variety of assessment methods 6
It s by teachers, for teachers Practicing classroom teachers: Develop the standards Develop the assessments Score the assessments Provide candidate support Advocate for related education reforms 7
It s about the Five Core Propositions Accomplished teachers Are committed to students and their learning. Are members of learning communities. Know the subjects they teach and how to teach them to students. Think systematically about their practice and learn from experience. Are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning. 8
National Board Certification covers the entire spectrum of learning National Board Certification is available in 25 certificate areas from Pre-K through 12th grade, structured along two dimensions: the developmental level of the students and the subject area. 9
Eligibility Must hold a Bachelor s degree or higher Must have completed a minimum of 3 years satisfactory teaching on a professional certificate (SPC or APC) Note: Teaching experience earned while on a conditional certificate is not counted Must presently hold a valid professional teaching certificate (not expired) 10
The certification process The certification process is undergoing revision over the course of three cycles beginning in During the rollout, candidates can choose from among the available components. In , 3 of the 4 components will be available. 11
Why Revise the Process? Remove barriers The National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) and other experts in the profession wanted to remove barriers in the process that have nothing to do with whether a teacher is accomplished. 12
Flexibility What is Changing? While teachers can complete the entire certification process in one year once it is fully implemented, some may choose to do so over several years if that fits better with other demands on a teacher s time. Affordability The total cost of certification will decrease from $2500 to $1,900, with each of the four components costing $475. Candidates will have the option to pay for and submit components separately.
What is Changing? More options for educators Efficiency While maintaining the same level of rigor, the process will be grouped into four components. Component 1 Component 2 Component 3 Component 4 Content Knowledge Differentiation in Instruction Teaching Practice and Classroom Environment Effective and Reflective Practitioner
The Components A general description of each component follows. The specific instructions will vary by certificate area, as will the standards assessed by each component. # 1 - Content Knowledge In this computer-based assessment, you demonstrate knowledge of and pedagogical practices for teaching your content area. You must demonstrate knowledge of developmentally appropriate content, which is necessary for teaching across the full age range and ability level of your chosen certificate area. This is assessed through the completion of three constructed response exercises and approximately 45 selected response items (SRIs). You will have up to 30 minutes to complete each of the three constructed response exercises and up to 60 minutes to complete the selected response section.
The Components # 2 Differentiation in Instruction This classroom-based portfolio entry is primarily comprised of samples of student work and an accompanying written commentary. You will submit selected work samples that demonstrate the students growth over time and a written commentary that analyzes your instructional choices.
The Components # 3 Teaching Practice and Learning Environment This component is currently under development. This is a classroombased portfolio entry that requires video recording(s) of interactions between you and your students. A written commentary in which you describe, analyze and reflect on your teaching and interactions will also be submitted. Both the video and the written commentary should demonstrate how you engage students and impact their learning.
The Components # 4 Effective & Reflective Practitioner This component is currently under development. This is a portfolio entry that requires evidence of your impact across your professional responsibilities as an educator including your students, peers, and community. This component will not be available until
How will the revised assessment roll-out? NB Certification will be rolled out over the course of three cycles (years). Not all components are available during the first year. If you are applying in 2014, you will complete two of the components in , one in and the last in It will take 3 years to complete all 4 components C1: Content Knowledge C2: Differentiation in Instruction C1: Content Knowledge C2: Differentiation in Instruction C3: Teaching Practice and Learning Environment C1: Content Knowledge C2: Differentiation in Instruction C3: Teaching Practice and Learning Environment C4: Effective and Reflective Practitioner
Scores are Defined by a rubric based on standards and core propositions Assigned by trained scorers in the specific teaching field Valid, fair and reliable Bankable 20
Financial Support $75 application fee reimbursed by QACBOE $475/component paid by MSDE & QACBOE Reimbursement of up to $250 for consumable supplies (i.e. paper, postage, ink, notebooks, discs, etc.) After achieving certification, you receive an annual stipend of $2,000 from QACBOE and $1,000 from MSDE totaling $3,000 a year until your certificate expires 21
