4 Nortel Mobile Client Accelerator About This Document Intended Audience This guide is intended for users of the Mobile Client Accelerator Windows Mobile (MCA Mobile) software client; it complements the on-line help system and provides a reference for offline study. 5 Nortel Mobile Client Accelerator Introducing Mobile Client Accelerator The Mobile Client Accelerator System Mobile Client Accelerator is a software program which runs in the background on a user s mobile device and accelerates the speed of communications between the user s device and servers for applications such as , web browsers, and file transfers. The software is mostly transparent to the user. However, there are some user options; this guide explains their use. Software Initialization By default, the Mobile Client Accelerator client automatically starts when the user starts the device. The system administrator may optionally require the user to register or login to the Mobile Client Accelerator software. If this option has been configured, the user will be presented with dialog boxes asking for the appropriate information. Modes of Operation While running, a Mobile Client Accelerator icon showing the software status will be displayed in the Windows Mobile system tray. Below are the various icon states. MCA Mobile is running and accelerating applications MCA Mobile has lost connection to the Mobile Client Accelerator server and is not accelerating applications MCA Mobile has lost connection to the Mobile Client Accelerator server but is still active (hibernating or in persistent mode)

7 Nortel Mobile Client Accelerator MCA Mobile Menus When the File menu in the interface is selected, the user is presented with a menu of options. Figure 3 MCA Mobile File Menu About Disable Acceleration Displays information about the software to the user. Exits the application. Internet applications will no longer be accelerated.

8 Nortel Mobile Client Accelerator When the View menu in the interface is selected, the user is presented with a menu of options. Figure 4 MCA Mobile View Menu Clear Stats Resets the raw Sent and Received byte counters to 0 Clear Events Un-Hibernate Change Login Info Change Server Info Preferences Clears all events from the connection monitor Forces client to reconnect when it is hibernating. Displays a dialog allowing the user to change login credentials for MCA Server. Displays a dialog allowing the user to change MCA Server info. Displays a dialog allowing the user to change client settings.

9 Nortel Mobile Client Accelerator Monitoring MCA Mobile In normal circumstances, you will enjoy the benefits of MCA Mobile performance without even being aware of its operation. However, if for any reason you need to check the status of your MCA link, you may do so using the MCA Mobile user interface. The user interface can be accessed through the MCA Mobile icon in the Windows Mobile system tray. Figure 5 Monitoring MCA Mobile Performance

10 Nortel Mobile Client Accelerator Configuring MCA Mobile Client Several options can be configured by the user in the MCA Mobile interface. Filter Images Figure 6 Filter Images When checked, no images will be downloaded or displayed. This can provide a faster web browsing experience. Preferences Figure 7 MCA Mobile Preferences Start Automatically Dial Connection Automatically Troubleshooting Mode Show MCA Mobile State MCA Mobile is launched automatically after Windows Mobile is rebooted Attempts to obtain Internet connection before connecting to MCA Server. Note: This option may have no effect depending on manufacturer device configuration. MCA Mobile runs in troubleshooting mode diagnostic information is collected while it is running. Performance may be affected if this option is checked. Display a dynamic tray icon in the Windows Mobile system tray.
