4 Executive Summary Hewlett Packard Enterprise contracted Edison Group to write a series of thought leadership articles that address how HPE is meeting some of hybrid cloud s greatest challenges for IT Operations Management (ITOM). The sources of the information were in-depth interviews with HPE ITOM Executives, supporting product documentation and Edison analyst s insights and observations. ITOM Strategy HPE helps customers move from traditional IT to a hybrid IT that enables a digital enterprise. This article explores how HPE s ITOM suites enable IT to align itself with the business by creating a digital enterprise that not only simplifies operational complexities, but also enables IT to drive true business value.. 5 IT challenges Companies today are experiencing competitive market pressures and rapidly changing customer demands. For example: Today, I communicate with my customer by telephone, , chat and online forms. Tomorrow, my communication or relationship with that customer will be primarily through a mobile application or even self-service portals. This new business model drives the need for a more digital enterprise, changing IT s focus and creating a more complex support environment: Applications are more important than ever - Continual demand for applications has forced the development of new methodologies, such as Agile and DevOps, and new tools in both application development and operational support. Concurrent traditional and emerging technology support The need to support both traditional and emerging technology and processes has resulted in operational resource deficiencies and increased operational support complexity. Hybrid Infrastructure The move towards concurrent on-premise and cloud-based infrastructure has helped provide agile, flexible and high-performing processing environment, while increasing operational complexity. Mobility Almost all internal and customer facing applications are now required to support all types of mobile platforms with commensurate application and infrastructure lifecycle requirements for IT operations. 6 The new IT/Business alignment IT can no longer solely focus on managing costs. Instead, IT must become a value creator to deliver real business outcomes to the business and its customers. Business and IT must align to fuel new customer experiences and new models to deliver products and services. IT must be able to respond more quickly, using the same number of resources (or fewer) and clearly demonstrate that they are a partner that operates at the speed of the business. To achieve this goal, IT needs to become more: Efficient The proliferation of systems and software and services and vendors and partners can be overwhelming. IT needs to realize greater efficiency even as it when deals with all of these interdependencies. Agile Speed of response to the business, without compromising compliance and stability has become key to the value IT delivers. IT has to contend with legacy systems and practices as well as new, more dynamic infrastructure and application requirements. Agility enables IT organizations to respond quickly to rapidly changing business requirements and accelerate delivery of new services. Innovative IT needs to increase not only the speed of its own innovation it has to enable others within the enterprise to innovate and have their best ideas tested, refined, and brought to life faster. IT needs to be constantly innovating to respond quickly to ever-changing business needs, new market opportunities, and competitive pressures. Done well, transforming IT will drive new efficiencies, increase agility and spur innovation. Transforming IT is a journey, and as a journey, you need a map to guide you. 7 HPE ITOM strategy A prescriptive journey HPE ITOM is delivering a strategic response to these market, business and technology pressures: HPE helps customers move from their traditional world to the world they must move to in order to stay competitive; in other words, from traditional IT to a digital enterprise. HPE ITOM has created a prescriptive path for organizations as they embark upon the journey to a digital enterprise. This three-phase path can be vital to a company s journey; but no two journeys are the same. Each phase complements and compounds the benefits of the previous phase. While there is an implied order, IT organizations can start one phase without fully completing the one before. There are clear benefits at each stage, and these benefits grow as each stage builds upon the previous foundation. Automation Automation is all about efficiency. IT needs to accelerate the automation of manual, repetitive tasks. Infrastructure and application provisioning, compliance, patching, and upgrading are all prime areas for widespread automation. Highly automated datacenters are much more resource efficient, have far fewer errors to remediate and are able to respond much faster to business requirements. Broad and deep automation capabilities set the stage for the next step in IT s journey Orchestration. Orchestration Orchestration extends efficiency gains, leveraging discrete automations to create end-toend processes. Orchestration enables IT to eliminate operational bottlenecks, execute highly leveraged, cross-silo and accelerate delivery of services. With orchestration, IT can efficiently host workloads and services and continuously create, and deliver new services. Transformation In the transformation phase, IT becomes a more proactive, holistic service delivery partner to the business. Here IT fully supports services in a modern way, with a customer experience that is indistinguishable between external customer and internal employees. At this stage, IT is a service provider and broker, leveraging the full power of the hybrid cloud. IT brokers and delivers services that align with the business needs. Making IT more and more data driven - learning from historical performance, leveraging analytics in real time processes and ultimately using predictive techniques to avoid problems and seize opportunities is mandatory to support the business, to optimize the go to market, to maximize customer loyalty. Collaboration ChatOps for IT Ops enables collaboration in a more efficient, accelerated way. ITOM is committed to developing and delivering rich capabilities that support highly collaborative interactions among IT teams and between IT and DevOps teams. Unified Orchestration HPE ITOM delivers a single orchestration platform to tie together the tasks and processes across all of IT, with minimal customization required. Unified orchestration is key as it provides operations with end-to-end process-based capabilities that tie all IT silos together, significantly increasing efficiency and responsiveness. User Experience/Containerization The use of container and micro-service architectures is the foundation of HPE s ITOM software suite. The use of containers and micro-services significantly improve the timeto-value for customers. These new implementation architectures are significantly improving the time and effort needed to install, configure, deploy, upgrade and maintain ITOM suites. 10 The Next Step in the Journey Today s dynamic business environment has changed IT requirements, which in turn has made it necessary to rethink and retool while continuing to support legacy systems. To be successful, IT needs to align more with the business. IT needs to focus on achieving key outcomes in this new alignment with an ever-changing business. IT needs to become more: Efficient, providing more support with the same or decreased resources Agile, being able to support business at the pace of the business, while it changes directions, adds new business lines and responds to constantly changing customer demands Innovative, being able to take advantage of emerging technologies, and revising operational processes using modern development and operational methodologies. Achieving these outcomes requires that IT undertake a transformation, a journey, from a traditional style of IT to a hybrid IT approach that supports the digital enterprise.
