1 r FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact Jessica Pauletto Churchill County Library Offers Information Technology Courses FALLON, Nev. (April 21, 2016) Churchill County Library (CCL) offers Information Technology Gateway Training (ITGT), a class series taught by Western Nevada College (WNC) to increase STEM-specialized employees for the expanding tech industry in Northern Nevada. In Dec. 2015, CCL became the first carrier of gigabit broadband Internet in Northern Nevada, provided by Churchill County Communications. The growing need for STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and math) encouraged the Round 2 STEM Workforce Challenge Grants, awarded by the Governor s Office of Science, Innovation and Technology (OSIT) in February ITGT will fulfill a critical need for homegrown, entry-level IT professionals while providing closer access to similar classes previously located in Carson City. Students can earn industry certifications in Microsoft and CompTIA, CISCO Routing and Switching. A sequence of three Graphic Communications classes prepares students for web design. These credit-based courses apply toward WNC Certificates of Achievement and Applied Associate of Arts degrees. *See Summer 2016 class schedule below Post-secondary students and current employees can choose between three academic sessions: Summer 2016, Fall 2016 or Spring All classes are online-based with instructional help. Tuition and exam assistance is available for all classes. ITGT hopes to employ 75 percent of trainees within three months of course completion. According to the OSIT, STEM industries in Nevada advanced manufacturing, IT, cyber security, energy and agriculture are growing faster than non-stem industries. It s a tremendous opportunity to educate and build a tech niche within our state, said Carol Lloyd, Director of the Churchill County Library. We are proud to host ITGT, and hope to create an interesting and accessible education outlet for students and professionals. The ITGT will be a model for other libraries to develop IT-programs for similar workforces. Course registration is available at Students who have not taken a credit class from WNC, or who have not attended class within the last two years, must apply to WNC at

Its recently upgraded, high-speed gigabit Internet provides broadband speeds among the fastest in Nevada. Library Director Carol Lloyd helped complete a Repurpose Project in February 2015, which enhanced and improved efficiency throughout the building. The CCL is a member of Cooperative Libraries Automated Network (CLAN), which provides access to materials from member Nevada libraries. About Western Nevada College Western Nevada College is a comprehensive, two-year community college that serves more than 5,000 students within a five-county, 10,000-square-mile area. It is one of four community colleges in the Nevada System of Higher Education, and is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. About Churchill Economic Development Authority (CEDA) The CEDA, located in Fallon, Nev., supports the local community to retain and expand existing business. It recruits sustainable industry to provide stable, primary jobs.
