7 PRE-SEA MARINE ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT 4 This course is intended for students who are/have: Male/Female Single Between years on date of commencement of the course Medically and physically fit for sea service Normal colour vision A SPM/or equivalent UK GCE O level certificate with: A credit in English Language A credit in Bahasa Melayu A credit in Mathematics A credit in Additional Mathematics A credit in Physics Three years after graduation, the graduates would be: PEO 1 A Marine Engineer who analyzes and applies the knowledge, understanding and proficiency while providing services to the maritime industry. 11 PRE-SEA MARINE ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT 8 Syllabus Synopsis Semester 1 DEA 1012 Business English The subject familiarizes the students with the basic components of Business English. The module shall assist the students to improve their existing knowledge of English language to a position where they can handle text books, business documents, presentations, and instructions they will meet in college as well as on board ship. DEA 1113 Engineering Mathematics I The subject provides the students with the understanding of the fundamentals of trigonometry and basic calculus. The module shall familiarize the students with the elementary principles and theorems relating to each topic and the application of these principles to engineering problems. DEA 1311 Fluid Mechanics The subject provides the students with the basic understanding of fundamentals of fluid Mechanics. The module shall familiarize the students in the analysis of the elementary principles and theorems relating to forces in equilibrium with an emphasis on the application on these principles to engineering problems. DEA 1413 Applied Thermodynamics I The subject provides the students with the understanding of the fundamentals of Thermodynamics. The module shall familiarise the students with the concept, working principles and operation of thermal plants.

DEA 1611 Engineering Materials I The subject provides the students with the understanding of the properties and production methods of various type of engineering materials. DEA 1623 Applied Mechanics I The subject provides the s t u d e n t s w i t h t h e u n d e rs ta n d i n g i n t h e fundamentals of Mechanics. The module shall familiarize the students in the analysis of the elementary principles and theorems relating to forces in equilibrium with an emphasis on the application on these principles to engineering problems. DEA 1713 Electrotechnology I The subject provides the students with the basic k n o w l e d g e o f e l e c t r o t e c h n o l o g y b y introducing the concepts of electrical resistance, voltage, current flow in dc circuits, principles of electro-magnetic induction and application of electrotechnology on board ship. DEA 1912 Engineering Workshop Skills I (Bench Fit ting) The subject equips the students with the basic knowledge on basic safety procedures and equipment in the workshop and on board ship. 13 PRE-SEA MARINE ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT 10 Syllabus Synopsis Semester 2 DEA 1022 Maritime English The subject familiarizes the students with the IMO SMCP, Maritime English vocabulary and shipping terms. The specific aim is to nurture and improve students communicative ability via Communicative Approach and VAK learning styles. The subject shall prepare students for developing the knowledge, understanding and proficiency in Maritime English especially the SMCP (Standard Marine Communication Phrases) and Marine Communication. DEA 1031 Computer System and Applications The subject familiarizes the students with the Personal Computer operating system, Spreadsheet application software, introduction to programming language and introduction to Matrix Laboratory (MATLAB). DEA 1123 Engineering Mathematics II The subject provides the students with the understanding of the fundamentals of basic calculus, matrices and probability. The module shall familiarize the students with the elementary principles and theorems related to each topic and the application of these principles to engineering problems. DEA 1212 Marine Instrumentation and Controls The subject provides the s t u d e n t s w i t h t h e understanding of basic principles of instrumentation and to familiarize with practical application on board ship.

14 11 AKADEMI LAUT MALAYSIA Syllabus Synopsis Semester 2 DEA 1322 Naval Architecture and Ship Construction I The subject provides the students with an understanding of the principles that maintain the stability of ocean going ships under various conditions of cargo loading and seaway. The subject also provides an understanding of the design and constructional aspects of ships with reference to effective maintenance. DEA 1423 Applied Thermodynamics II The subject provides the students with the knowledge and understanding of the application of Thermodynamics laws in the analysis of heat engine cycles, characteristics of internal combustion engine performance, performance characteristics of refrigeration system, various mode of heat transfer and basic design and performance of steam turbines. DEA 1432 Marine Engineering Knowledge The subject provides the students with a general basic knowledge of ships main propulsion engines and their associated auxiliary machineries including diesel engine, marine boilers, steam turbine and gas turbine. DEA 1922 Engineering Workshop Skills II (Maintenance) The subject provides the s t u d e n t s w i t h t h e understanding of the basic knowledge on basic safety procedures and equipment in the workshop and on board ship. As a guide to becoming an effective professional field workers and the development of Malaysia. MPU 2113 Pengajian Malaysia Mata pelajaran ini bertujuan melahirkan pelajar yang memahami peranannya dalam proses pembinaan Negara bangsa dan bersemangat patriotik dalam menghadapi cabaran pembangunan. MPU 2123 Bahasa Melayu Komunikasi Untuk memahami dan membolehkan pelajar menguasai kemahiran asas bahasa Melayu dan kecekapan berbahasa untuk berkomunikasi bagi melahirkan idea dan perasaan secara lisan dan penulisan. Syllabus Synopsis Semester 3 DEA 3333 Naval Architecture and Ship Construction II The subject provides the students with an understanding of the principles that maintain the stability of ocean going ships under various conditions of cargo loading and seaway. DEA 3482 Plant Maintenance/ Laboratory Training I The subject equips the students with the basic knowledge on basic safety procedures and equipment in the workshop and on board ship.

16 13 AKADEMI LAUT MALAYSIA Syllabus Synopsis Semester 3 DEA 3523 Engineering Drawing II The subject enables the students to identify and relate all different displays of drawing from an assembly drawing of a mechanical product and to list all elements which make up the assembly and establish the relationship between them by describing its functionality and to introduced computer aided design (CAD) software in the engineering drawings. DEA 3633 Applied Mechanics II The subject provides the students with the understanding of the fundamentals of Mechanics. The module shall familiarize the students in the analysis of the simple machines and the strength of materials, particularly the nature of the internal forces and deformation produced. DEA 3723 Electrotechnology II The subject provides the students with the basic knowledge of alternating current theory and principles of 3 phase ac power generation and distribution. DEA 3733 Electronics and Laboratory The subject provides the students with the basic understanding, identification and working principles of electronic components in the circuit. The module will also familiarize students in the main operation of electronic systems.

17 PRE-SEA MARINE ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT 14 Syllabus Synopsis Semester 3 MPU 2312 Application of Leadership & Team Working Skills The subject familiarizes the students with the basic concept of management in an organization to effect efficient management on board ships and ashore. The aim of the course is also to fulfil part requirements in Part A, Chapter II, Table A-II/1 and Chapter III, Table A-III/1 of the Standard Training and Certification of Watch keepers and Seafarers (STCW) Convention 1978 and 2010 Amendments in Application of Leadership and Team working Skills for aspiring deck officers and engineering officers prior issuance of Certificate of Competency as Watch keepers. Syllabus Synopsis Semester 4 DEA 3222 Marine Controls and Automation The subject provides the students with knowledge and of the working principles of m a r i n e c o n t ro l s a n d automation. DEA 3453 Engineering Knowledge (General) The subject provides the students with knowledge and u n d e r s t a n d i n g t h e constructional, operational and related system especially marine auxiliary machineries. DEA 3463 Engineering Knowledge (Motor) The subject provides the students with knowledge and understanding of the constructional, operational and related systems of marine diesel engines.

18 15 AKADEMI LAUT MALAYSIA Syllabus Synopsis Semester 4 DEA 3473 Engineering Knowledge (Steam) The subject provides the students with knowledge of the working principles of steam power plant and its associated auxiliary machinery. Dea 3492 Plant Maintenance/ Laboratory Training II The subject equips the students with the basic k n ow l e d g e o n s a fe t y procedures and equipment in the workshop and on board ship. Dea 3533 Engineering Design The subject provides the students with the understanding of basic engineering design concepts with the introduction of design analysis by Finite Element Method (FEM) using a CAD/CAE software. The module shall familiarize the students in the analysis of the strength and stiffness of machine parts due to the effects of loading. The module shall also familiarize the students in the process of selection and purchase of standard machinery components. Dea 3743 Marine Electrical Practice The subject enables the students to operate and maintain shipboard electrical system safely.

Passing criteria: i) 50% in each LCA (minimum 2 LCA for each subject) ii) 50% in Final examination + 50% Overall (LCA+ FINAL). 1.1 If a candidate fails in any of the LCA (<50%) he/she shall be offered a Referral LCA before the Final examination. 1.2 If the candidate fail to appear in any of the LCA without any valid reason or fails in both LCA or fails in the referral LCA, he/she will n o t be allowed to appear in the Final Examination and require to repeat the failed Module/Subject in subsequent programme. 1.3 However, the candidate has to attend classes and fulfil the required attendance criteria failing which he/she may be required to r e p e a t the course. 1.4 The candidate may repeat the failed subject when offered in subsequent Programme schedules (within a stipulated period of 24 months from the date of first examination). 1.5 If the candidate fails in Final Examination, he/she shall be offered two attempts of referral final examination (within a stipulated period of 6 months from the date of first examination). 1.6 If the candidate fails in the Referral final examinations, he/she will be required to repeat the course for the failed Module/ Subject. 1.7 If the candidate fails to appear or secure a Pass in the required examinations within the stipulated period, he/she will be required to repeat the full course. 2. A final assessment by viva-voce will be conducted by Marine Department, Malaysia. Certification will be by Marine Department, Malaysia. 3. For Practical Assessments, relevant assessment sheets are used to evaluate skill levels and safe working practices. 4. Assessment based on TARB book will be carried out after completion of the shipboard training. 5. *The duration of the Final Examination for Engineering Drawing II is 3 hours

23 PRE-SEA MARINE ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT 20 This course is intended for students who are/have: Male/Female Not more than 28 years of age at the commencement of the course Medically and physically fit for sea service Normal colour vision A Bachelor s degree in Mechanical Engineering/Naval Architecture from a recognized university or institute with minimum a Second Class honours or equivalent grade. Note: Any other engineering degree may be considered subject to evaluation by ALAM and Marine Department. On completion of the course, students will have sufficient knowledge of the basic principles to be observed in keeping an engineering watch as per STCW Regulation III/2 and III/1 with respect to STCW 2010 and national requirements and will have sufficient knowledge, understanding and skill to carry out that part of duties and responsibilities concerned with the operation, maintenance and repair of: 1. Marine Machinery 2. Electrical, Electronic and Control Equipment 3. Controlling the Operation of the Ship 4. Care for Persons on board

24 21 AKADEMI LAUT MALAYSIA The aim of the course is to provide the students with the knowledge, understanding and skill necessary to prepare Engineering graduates who meet the entry requirements, for the Watchkeeper Certificate of Competency (Motor/Steam) for unlimited voyages. The course is conducted in 4 phases and students will need to complete the mandatory required phases as stipulated by the Director of Marine, Marine Department Malaysia. Exemption from any of the phases will only be granted by the Director of Marine, Marine Department, Malaysia. The following are the 4 phases: Phase 1 - Ship familiarization and workshop training in the academy Phase 2 - Academic and Professional Studies in the Academy Phase 3 - Shipboard/Sea Training Phase 4 - Oral preparatory course

Passing criteria: i) 50% in each LCA (minimum 2 LCA for each subject) ii) 50% in Final examination + 50% Overall (LCA+ FINAL). 1.1 If a candidate fails in any of the LCA (<50%) he/she shall be offered a Referral LCA before the Final examination. 1.2 If the candidate fail to appear in any of the LCA without any valid reason or fails in both LCA or fails in the referral LCA, he/she will not be allowed to appear in the Final Examination and require to repeat the failed Module/Subject in subsequent programme. 1.3 However, the candidate has to attend classes and fulfil the required attendance criteria failing which he/she may be required to repeat the course. 1.4 The candidate may repeat the failed subject when offered in subsequent Programme schedules (within a stipulated period of 24 months from the date of first examination). 1.5 If the candidate fails in Final Examination, he/she shall be offered two attempts of referral final examination (within a stipulated period of 6 months from the date of first examination). 1.6 If the candidate fails in the Referral final examinations, he/she will be required to repeat the course for the failed Module/ Subject. 1.7 If the candidate fails to appear or secure a Pass in the required examinations within the stipulated period, he/she will be required to repeat the full course. 2. A final assessment by viva-voce will be conducted by Marine Department, Malaysia. Certification will be by Marine Department, Malaysia. 3. For Practical Assessments, relevant assessment sheets are used to evaluate skill levels and safe working practices. 4. Assessment based on TARB book will be carried out after completion of the shipboard training.

On completion of the course, students will have sufficient knowledge, understanding and skill to carry out that part of duties and responsibilities proficiency required for certification of engine rating to meet standards of competence specified in section A-III/4 of the Standards of Training and Certification for Seafarers (STCW) 2010 Manila Amendment for function marine engineering at support level. 1. The aim of the course is to provide the students with the knowledge, understanding and skill necessary to prepare him/her for a certification of engine ratings engineering watch to meet the standards of competence specified in section A-III/4 of the Standards of Training and Certification for Seafarers (STCW) 2010 Manila Amendment for function marine engineering at support level. 2.
