1 Missoula County Public Schools Job Description Job Classification: Network Coordinator Bargaining Unit: Merged Missoula Classified Employees Association Reports to/supervised by: Supervisor of Technology Services =================================================================== The Network Coordinator is one of two key job classifications of the District Information Systems Center (ISC). The Network Coordinator teams with the PC/Network Technicians to provide overall support for all aspects of the District s computer and network resources. Although each of the two job classifications is defined by key responsibilities, employees in both classifications assist the other with duties as the needs arise. The primary responsibility of the Network Coordinators is to maintain district servers, district user accounts, overall system security, network infrastructure and connectivity, stability of software installations and upgrades, and provide high level assistance to the PC/Network Technicians. A Network Coordinator will be assigned to one of three specific job assignments depending on expertise and training. These include: Network Systems Coordinator, Infrastructure Systems Coordinator, and Desktop Systems/Helpdesk Coordinator. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include, but are not limited to the following. Other job-related duties may be assigned. A. PROVIDE CUSTOMER SERVICE, COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL INTERACTION by 1. Maintaining daily operations for the district helpdesk as needed. 2. Interfacing with the users of technology; employing a high degree of tact and diplomacy to promote a positive image of the department. 3. Responding to inquiries from staff to provide technical assistance and support for district approved instructional and administrative technology to ensure user satisfaction and productivity. 4. Providing feedback to District staff on resolution of problems. 5. Participating in team projects that enhance the quality and efficiency of network services. 6. Documenting reported problems in the helpdesk support data base. Prioritizing and escalating issues appropriately. 7. Documenting issues with network access for long-term problem identification. 8. Documenting issues with software applications for problem identification. 9. Documenting issues with network/internet access speed. 10. Documenting issues with systems. 11. Developing and maintaining procedures for the district helpdesk to include training, coaching, organizing and planning. 12. Developing and maintaining support pages on the MCPS web site for communications to district staff as applicable. Assisting all ISC staff with posting and updating pertinent information. B. PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR INSTRUCTIONAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE TECHNOLOGY (TECHNOLOGIES INCLUDE DISTRICT OWNED COMPUTERS AND PERIPHERALS (PRINTERS, SCANNERS, ETC.) AND COMPUTER CONNECTED MULTIMEDIA DEVICES SUCH AS LCD PROJECTORS, INTERACTIVE BOARDS, CAMERAS, ETC.) by 1. Providing standard support and maintenance of District technologies. 2. Providing advanced troubleshooting of current district system peripherals. 3. Installing, configuring and troubleshooting internal and external computer video presentation hardware and software. 4. Troubleshoot and maintain ceiling mounted and standalone LCD projectors.
2 5. Setup and install document cameras and associated software. 6. Install Troubleshoot and maintain Interactive boards, tablets, and student response systems. 7. Coordinating warranty and repair of district systems and peripherals. 8. Identifying and providing resolution of hardware and software technical issues and malfunctions related to workstations operating systems. 9. Replacing computers and peripherals according to the District Replacement Plan. 10. Performing research, evaluating and providing documented recommendations for new technologies and tools within the IT field 11. Assisting in the development, maintenance, and promotion of departmental philosophies and methodologies. 12. Developing, maintaining and enhancing quality support methods and communication through , telephone and work order ticketing system. 13. Assisting in development and deployment of unattended operating system installations for workstations/desktops/laptops and other supported devices. 14. Creating and maintaining up-to-date basic configuration images for all current equipment models according to district standards. 15. Testing software for functionality in Windows environment. 16. Assisting with verification of legal installation of software. 17. Acquiring and maintaining current knowledge of relevant product offerings and support policies in order to provide technically accurate solutions for users. 18. Managing assigned projects and program components to deliver services in accordance with established objectives. 19. Isolating problem trends and identifying recurring problems to find solutions. 20. Assisting in creating and troubleshooting Group Policy Objects (GPO) for managing the security and configuration of the desktop workstations and other devices. 21. Handling of escalated support issues 22. Building and deploying software distribution packages for operating systems and designated applications. 23. Developing utilities and/or engineering scripted solutions to address configuration issues and streamline standards and deployment methodologies. 24. Maintaining network print services with regards to network operations. 25. Recommending professional maintenance schedules. C. PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR NETWORK CONNECTIVITY by 1. Assisting with isolating and correcting network connectivity issues in coordination with other district ISC staff. 2. Troubleshooting, reconfiguring or replacing NICs, cables and unmanaged switches. 3. Providing escalated support for network connectivity issues. 4. Installing, configuring and maintaining network servers. 5. Monitoring network infrastructure performance to identify and correct problems. 6. Analyzing, designing and implementing support of the MCPS LAN/WAN infrastructure. 7. Installing, configuring and maintaining network switches, access points and routers. 8. Evaluating and recommending replacement needs for district network infrastructure. 9. Developing and implementing a network infrastructure maintenance plan. D. PROVIDE SECURE ACCESS TO NETWORK by 1. Maintaining network security by understanding Group Policy Objects and network file permissions as well as policies and permissions on the local operating system. 2. Maintaining network access in accordance with the District Acceptable Use Policy. 3. Instructing Staff on log-in process. 4. Identifying individual and systemic log-in problems and reporting to appropriate Network Coordinator. 5. Developing and maintaining network security policies for internal and external access to network. 6. Creating individual student and user accounts. 7. Maintaining district faculty and staff network user accounts by creating or resetting network logons, district accounts and Internet access. 8. Performing annual cleanup of student and staff accounts.
3 9. Developing and maintaining district-wide network user account management procedures. 10. Designing, creating and troubleshooting Group Policy Objects (GPO) for managing the security and configuration of the desktop workstations and other devices as assigned. E. SUPPORT BUILDING SERVER OPERATIONS by 1. Monitoring usage of computer/network resources and report inappropriate usage. 2. Monitoring daily server functionality. 3. Maintaining server file management according to ISC directives. 4. Developing and monitoring server virus protection procedures. F. PROTECT DISTRICT DATA by 1. Following policies and procedures ensuring the security and integrity of district data. 2. Performing or assisting with file recovery as needed. 3. Performing routine changes and cleaning of core district backup devices. 4. Developing and implementing data storage plans. 5. Developing procedures for regular system data backup and recovery. 6. Maintaining weekly data tape transfers for off-site storage for core district servers. G. PROVIDE BUILDINGS WITH TECHNICAL EXPERTISE by 1. Attending relevant training sessions and assisting in training workshops. 2. Recommending improvements to existing network systems architecture, network policies, procedures, standards and guidelines and work in conjunction with Supervisor of Technology Services to ensure necessary security levels are maintained. 3. Evaluating new technologies for possible deployment in production environment. 4. Facilitating the ordering process by providing expertise in models to meet users requirements. 5. Providing input/advice as technology plans are developed and implemented. 6. Providing input/advice on appropriate versions of software to be ordered. 7. Providing technical coaching and mentoring to district technical staff/work-study. 8. Working with key users to understand technical requirements and potential solutions within the current or proposed future network architecture. 9. Attending Technology Committees as requested. H. MAINTAIN A HIGH LEVEL OF ETHICAL BEHAVIOR AND RESPECT FOR ALL CONFIDENTIAL MATERIALS by 1. Upholding and supporting security rules and procedures, especially with regards to the safeguarding of confidential data.
4 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Licensure and Certification: High School Diploma or G.E.D. A.A. or B.S. Degree Computer Science or related degree (or relevant experience) preferred. Completion of a program in the area of computer use and applications processing from a recognized post-secondary institution, or the equivalent of experience in computers and computer applications. Network certification in one or more the following may be considered in addition to a degree: i. A+ Hardware ii. Microsoft Certified Professional iii. Microsoft Desktop Support Technician iv. Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator Experience: Three years prior computer repair or software support experience required, 5+ years preferred Three+ years with hands-on experience with current network environments Working knowledge of LAN architecture and troubleshooting. Experience with network hardware setup, support and troubleshooting. Experience with current network security preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of computer system components. Knowledge of hardware troubleshooting techniques. Knowledge of printer configuration, troubleshooting and cleaning procedures. Knowledge or experience in configuring, installing and supporting network servers, printers, workstations, routers and other security devices and switching technologies. Knowledge of network design and operation. Knowledge of Windows operating systems. Strong grasp of Internet (TCP/IP) network practices and concepts, security practices and concepts. Ability to think logically and analyze application and process requirements with strong analytical and organizational skills. Ability to handle multiple projects at one time and be able to work with basic project management skills and minimal supervision. Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team to achieve desired results. Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible Ability to work in an environment with rapidly shifting and often contradictory priorities, and frequent interruptions.
5 Ability to prioritize and coordinate simultaneous projects, reason logically, and perform detailed work with accuracy, under such conditions. Leadership, organization, conflict management, exercise good judgment; make sound decisions, motivate a technical staff and anticipate and resolve a wide range of problems, promote team work, train others and effectively communicate with staff, users and management. Ability to learn new technology quickly. Proficiency in oral and written communication skills. Ability to organize and prioritize work. Ability to read and follow directions correctly. Ability to work well with students and adults Ability to organize and manage work assignments with little supervision. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job the employee is often required to do the following for long periods: Sitting, walking, bending, and twisting at the neck and waist Lifting and or carrying up to 50 lbs. Performing routine and/or repetitive work motions. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job may include: Working in an open office environment with frequent interruptions, Working alone or as a member of a team, Working under stressful conditions, Managing multiple priorities and tasks. Meeting deadlines with severe time constraints, High volume work load, Occasional prolonged and irregular hours Having reliable transportation for travel between District buildings.
