1 Allied Engineering Technology The Allied Engineering Technology Support group is a collection of majors in high-demand engineering technology disciplines. Specifically, graduates from the Quality (QET), Environmental/ Health/Safety (EHS), and Industrial Engineering Technology (IET) programs are entering career paths that span the spectrum of industrial manufacturing to commercial retail and service organizations. Students from these programs are able to enter such diverse employment markets because the skills they possess are needed in any organization. Skills such as planning, control, reliability, improvement, and compliance are not bound only to one type of manufacturing or industrial environment. Successful graduates provide substantial impact to organizations as technicians, analysts, auditors, engineers, supervisors, managers, and other positions. A highlight worth mentioning is the exciting two in three program in the Allied group. This program enables students to complete two (2) Associate degrees in three (3) years. Combining the QET, EHS or IET degrees in pairs or with a other majors within the Division of IT/ET enables the student to complete both degrees in three years of full-time attendance. Tech Prep Partner See page 168 for details. Environmental, Health and Safety Environmental, health and safety issues are growing concerns for many types of fields including manufacturing, environmental consulting, environmental monitoring, transportation, parks and forest agencies, construction companies, environmental restoration, and any other operation where the environment or workers are exposed to possible harm. As more emphasis is placed on the welfare of our natural environment and on the health and safety of individuals in the workplace, this has influenced the trend toward jobs with an environmental, health or safety function. The completion of the Environmental, Health and Safety Technology major will prepare students to apply skills in science, communication, health issues, environmental compliance and workplace safety. Specific areas of study include: collecting soil and water samples, air monitoring, managing cleanup activities, complying with environmental, health and safety regulations, making recommendations concerning solid and hazardous wastes and performing laboratory tests. The program has been developed with ongoing input from an advisory committee of industry and environmental services experts to ensure the curriculum includes the knowledge and skills needed in business and industry. As a graduate of Rhodes State College s Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS), students will have the needed qualifications to meet the needs of both the public and private sectors as they face increasing regulatory demands for protection of the environment and assurances of the health and safety of workplace employees. Industrial Engineering Technology The Industrial Engineering Technology (IET) program is a selfdirected program that uses the Internet, textbooks and videos for course delivery and instruction. The program provides the student with a unique opportunity to schedule coursework around personal and work commitments. The program is housed in a highlyequipped lab with faculty who are available to support students and monitor their progress. Testing is conducted either on the Internet or in the lab at convenient times for the student. Industrial Engineering Technicians are concerned with the efficient use of people, materials and machines needed to produce goods and services. Frequently, they prepare layouts of machinery, plan the flow of work, conduct statistical studies and analyze production costs. The main role of the Industrial Engineering Technician is to utilize methods and systems to increase productivity and reduce costs. The purpose of this program is to provide the student, in a flexible and convenient manner, with an integrated education leading to career positions in the following areas: industrial engineering, ergonomics program management, production planning and control, quality engineering, planning and logistics, procurement services, operations management, manufacturing management, plant management, and process improvement. In addition, the program provides the student with numerous other employment opportunities in banks, hospitals, construction, agriculture, government, wholesale and retail businesses. Quality Engineering Technology Today quality is defined simply as customer satisfaction. Every private and public business, whether for profit or non-profit, is finding it necessary to make quality an integral part of its business strategy to maintain or increase their market share of customers. The implementation of ISO-9000, an international quality specification, or TS 16949, a similar automotive specification, is now required to compete in the global and domestic markets. The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and many new state and local quality awards have prompted businesses of all types to make quality a major part of their business strategy. 123
2 There is an unprecedented demand for quality professionals in every human endeavor. Many positions are going unfilled not just in the traditional areas of manufactured goods and services such as aerospace, automotive, textiles, oil, electronics, pharmaceuticals, food and beverages; but also in medical services, insurance, banking, education, communications, public services. The list is endless and the competition for the hearts and dollars of customers has become a global endeavor. The Division of Information Technology and Engineering Technology offers several options to prepare students for this exciting and in- demand career. A two-year Associate Degree in Applied Sciences with a Quality Engineering Technology Major is available for those interested in a broad base background. Rhodes State also offers several certificates that concentrate in the quality disciplines, including: Planning for Quality Improvement Certificate, Internal Quality Auditor Certificate, Lean-Six Sigma Methods Certificate, and Six Sigma Green Belt Certificate. These certificates can be obtained by QET majors as well as non-majors to enhance their skills and background for today s competitive global business environment. Areas of study include: quality planning, improvement and control; team building and motivation; statistical processes control and experimental design; ISO and TS quality management systems; auditing; lean manufacturing; and materials testing and measurement. Emphasis is placed on real world situations in the product and service industries. Technical electives may be in the electronics, mechanical or chemical studies. Upon completion of the Quality Engineering Technology major, the graduate will possess the analytical, technical and human skills necessary to improve the quality, productivity and competitiveness of American business and industry. The demand for quality specialists will continue to grow as service companies and manufacturers find it necessary to design and maintain new systems for producing and delivering reliable, precise, and safe products and services while reducing costs and product liability, as well as maintaining productivity and making a profit. Students may further enhance their professional development by pursuing a personal certification in the Quality Sciences through the American Society for Quality (ASQ). The following certifications are offered by ASQ: Certified Mechanical Inspector (CMI), Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), Certified Quality Technician (CQT), Certified Quality Auditor (CQA), Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE), Certified Software Quality Engineer (CSQE), Certified Quality Manager (CQM), Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (SSGB) and Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (SSBB). Any of these certifications are a valuable, industry-wide, respected credential. Technical Standards See page 122 for details. 124
