4 What is SpaceTEC and Where did CertTEC Come From? In existence since 2002, SpaceTEC is a National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education Center whose mission is supporting the aerospace industry. Since it s inception, SpaceTEC has continued to develop and administer the nation s only third-party performance-based credentials for aerospace technicians. SpaceTEC Partners, Inc. (SPI), is a 501c3 non-profit corporation formed in 2009 to manage SpaceTEC and other activities directly or indirectly related to the grant. CertTEC, a division of SPI, was created in 2010 and works with leading aviation/aerospace companies and technology centers/colleges to deliver credentials assessing relevant skills and competencies desired in prospective employees nationwide. Using an effective, proven process, necessary qualifications, skills and experience identified by practitioners and educators are translated to standards, which can then be applied to develop qualified STEM technicians through an accredited, third-party, performance-based credentialing process. 4

13 Certification Process Typically 3-parts. Proctored written exam through Questionmark AMS Oral Exam when indicated based on written exam results and administered by qualified examiner Practical Exam consisting of 5 to 10 individual tasks administered by a qualified examiner

14 Performance Based Testing Performance testing can help educators understand the validity of their programs.(if they are willing and want to know) The requirement to demonstrate BOTH knowledge and ability to do is the missing link in technology education. Employers are beginning to understand just how important it is to hire individuals who not only have the knowledge but also the ability to perform. 15 Performance-Based Certifications are Effective but, not without some drawbacks. Costly - must pay examiners for each exam they administer Practical test kits - costs can range from $3000 to $5000 per kit Hard to scale - typically an examiner will test 2-3 students at one time (3-4 hours to complete) Must maintain a national examiner network

16 Performance Testing Benefit The inclusion of performance testing has an additional benefit to the training process: When students are aware they ll be required to demonstrate skills in a third party certification they approach learning differently. Academic A students may become C students; Academic C students may become Performance A students. As Educators, isn t this exactly what you want to know?
