2 Bachelor of Science, School of Information Major Course Descriptions Program Pre-Requisites (21 credits - required) COP 2931 Programming I C++*: Introduction to procedural and object oriented programming using C++. Fundamental aspects of programming including: code style & documentation, data types, control structures, functions, arrays, pointers, file input & output, classes, objects, templates, overloading, and inheritance are covered. Prereq: Two of the GenEd Math/Statistics requirements. COP 2930 Programming II Java*: Apply object-oriented programming principles in a visual environment and prepare students for developing applications for the World Wide Web. Prereq: Programming I C++. Program Courses Major Courses (45 credits required) LIS 3103 Introduction to Information Science*: Foundations of the discipline, history, core theories and methodologies, and approaches to information science, with an emphasis on the critical role of information technology. LIS 3793 Information Architecture*: Covers the design, organization, implementation, and maintenance of digital information spaces for human access, navigation, and use. Examines the core concepts, activities, and dominating technologies in information architecture, with a particular emphasis on systems analysis and design. Prereq: LIS LIS 3353 Core IT Concepts for Information Professionals*: Covers the history, development, and current state of computer hardware and software. Also examines programming basics, networks, the internet and web, emerging technologies, information industries, and careers. LIS 2780 Database Concepts*: Essential concepts in database modeling and design, including normalization, SQL, Data Modeling, and applications. Prereq: LIS LIS 3361 World Wide Web Page Design and Management: Overview and practical applications of key Web Technologies. Covers the use of the most current versions of HTML, XHTML, and CSS to design and produce basic but effective Web pages. Also examines the use of structure tags, format tags, hypertext links, graphics, image maps, tables, forms, and other concepts. LIS 4930 Data Structures and Algorithms*: This course is designed to introduce the concepts and application of data structures and algorithm analysis. Storage and organization of data via standard data structures is explored using arrays, records, linked lists, stacks, queues, tables, trees, and graphs. Algorithm design, analysis and implementation are explored. Prereq: Programming II Java.

3 LIS 4351 Interaction Design*: Covers the process of interaction design with an emphasis on a user-centered approach. Major topics include cognition; user needs assessment, interface design, modeling, prototyping, usability testing, and evaluation. Prereq: LIS LIS 4365 Web Design Technologies*: Exploration of advanced applications of key Web Technologies. Prereq: LIS LIS 4482 Networks and Communication*: This course is designed to provide a solid foundation in data communication and networking. Topics addressed include local area networks (LANs), wide area networks, (WANs), the protocols that are used to implement networks, and management issues that face IT network professionals. Prereq: LIS LIS 4410 Information Policy and Ethics*: Examines issues related to information use in today s society. Topics include governmental regulations and policies, information literacy, digital divide, information ethics, and intellectual property issues. LIS 4277 Information Behaviors*: Theories and issues surrounding various information behaviors, such as information needs, seeking, and use, and how understanding these information the practice of information professionals and design of information systems. Prereq: LIS LIS 4930 Information Analytics*: Information creation. An introduction to the use of graphical computational modeling applications to explore, understand and predict organizational and social events, based on available data. Analytics incorporates the use of large datasets, statistics, and techniques from analysis & design. Prereq: Senior status. LIS 4930 Systems Analysis and Design*: Course presents concepts, procedures, and tools needed to build computer-based information systems. The objective is to develop project management, data collection, analysis, design, testing and documentation skills. Prereq: Programming II Java, LIS 2780, LIS 4351, ENC LIS 4905 Directed Individual Study*: (S/U grade only.) Guided studies for individual professional and subject needs. May be repeated to a maximum of six (6) semester hours. Prereq: Senior status. ENC 3248 Communication for Information Professionals*: (GenEd) New course designed by English for this program to address the writing and communication requirements of information professionals. LIS 4930 Information Studies Capstone Seminar*: A culmination and application of IS concepts and acquired skill sets. Students will be immersed in an exploration of contemporary issues that face information professionals. Prereq: Senior status. Electives (15 credits - required) Selected from various courses, in department or in collaboration with other units. CIS 3360 Principles of Information Security (3) AS EIT: Board review of Information Security and related elements. Includes terminology, history of the discipline, overview of information

4 security program management. Suitable for IS, criminal justice, political science, accounting information systems students. Prereq: Admission to BSAS Concentration. CIS 3362 Cryptography and Information Security (3) AS EIT: This course examines classical cryptography, entropy, stream and block ciphers, public key versus symmetric cryptography, one-way and trap-door functions, plus other specific tools and techniques in popular use. Prereq: MAD 2104 or permission of instructor. CIS 4203 Computer Forensics & Investigations (3) US EIT: Teaches the methods of acquiring, preserving, retrieving, and presenting data that have been processed electronically and stored on computer media for use in legal proceedings. Focus on MS Windows systems. Prereq: Programming course and a math course. CIS 4204 Ethical Hacking (3) AS EIT: Provides an understanding of computing, networking, exploitation techniques, used for IT security. In testing, a legal ethical hacker tries to penetrate a system, finds its weakest link and analyzes ways to correct security flaws. Prereq: Programming course and a math course. CIS 4368 Database Security and Audits (3) AS EIT: An in-depth look at database security concepts and auditing techniques. Hands-on approach when examining security techniques. Examines different security strategies and advancements in implementation as well as problem solving. Prereq: Database course. CIS 4412 Information Technology Resource Management (3) AS EIT: An overview of the information resource management function, with emphasis on information systems management, is covered. Topics include planning, organizing and controlling user services, managing information system development process, and the fundamentals of EDP auditing. Prereq: Junior standing or above. CIS 4510 I.T. Project Management (3) AS EIT: This course covers the general aspects of project management and emphasizes the important, special considerations which apply to information technology projects. Supporting software is used extensively. Prereq: CI. ISM 3011 Information Systems in Organizations (3) BU QMB: An introduction to the language, concepts, structures and processes involved in the management of information systems including fundamentals of computer-based technology and the use of business-based software for support of managerial decisions. Prereq: CGS 2100 or equivalent. ISM 4133 Advanced Systems Analysis and Design (3) BU QMB: This course builds previous class and/or work experience in systems development, with particular emphasis on the use of an integrated CASE tool on a team project. Students will gain an understanding of systems development problems and approaches using a variety of methods, such as, lectures, discussion, team presentations, guest speakers, demonstrations and computer use. Prereq: ISM 4212 with a grade of C or better (not C-). ISM 4213 Advanced Database Administration (3) BU QMB: Essential concepts of database administration in a business environment are covered in order to prepare students to understand and deal with database administration issues and concepts. Students gain hands-on experience by administering a database environment and completing assignments that involve

5 resource management, data administration, security, backup, recovery and database tuning issues. Prereq: ISM 3113, ISM 4212, with grades of C or better (not C-). ISM 4240 Distributed Operating Systems (3) BU QMB: Introduction to distributed operating systems fundamentals such as distributed systems architecture, file structures, client-server, open systems, resource allocation, and basic tools for manipulating these operating environments. Prereq: ISM 3113 with a grade of C or better (not C-). ISM 4382 Global Information Systems (3) BU QMB: Role of information technology in global business organizations and challenges in building information systems to enable global operations. Prereq: ISM 3011 with a grade of C or better (not C-). ISM 4400 Decision Support Systems (3) BU QMB: Study of quantitative analysis tools and their use in organizational decision making. Emphasis on a structured approach to making common business decisions, demonstrating several forms of mathematical modeling and other management science techniques. Prereq: QMB 3200, ISM 3011, with a grade of C or better (not C-). ISM 4480 Electronic Commerce Systems (3) BU QMB: Familiarize students with the opportunities and challenges associated with e-commerce and its business models, to explore the underlying technologies used in implementing e-commerce systems, and to develop the skills needed to manage effective Web sites. Prereq: ISM 3011 with a grade of C or better (not C-), MIS major or CC. NOTES: Courses with a prerequisite of CGS 2100 can substitute LIS 3353 Core IT Concepts for Information Professionals.
