2 Course Design The Bachelor of Design (Interior Design) is a three-year professional degree preparing graduates for employment in the interior design profession in Australia and overseas. Students in this course develop as highly creative design professionals who think critically, reflect on ideas, and progress a complex project from a theoretical concept though to detailed resolution while balancing the social, ethical, cultural, technical, business and environmental contexts in which a designer operates. The course fosters in graduates practical understanding and a strong foundation for professional excellence, and student independence. Course Learning Outcomes Graduates of the Bachelor of Design (Interior Design) will: Have extensive and well-founded quantitative and qualitative theoretical (psycho/social) knowledge of the design of human spaces and the relevance and value of interior design to people and ideas. Capability to possess the vision of potential and cognitive capabilities for continuing professional development to build upon their knowledge to shape human experiences in the context of the construction industry. Ability to independently engage in self-directed and collaborative, innovative and creative design projects with the capacity to solve problems, reflect critically on ideas, evaluate own work effectively and adapt to change. Ability to form spaces which synthesise human, economic and environmental ecologies that advance social well-being. Capability to develop aligned personal and professional ethics by employing sound business practices, entrepreneurship and collaborative and creative problem solving practices that support sustained, professional creative practice. SUBJECT: Visual thinking CODE: DEDES101A CREDIT POINTS: 10 CONTACT HRS: 5 hpw PREREQUISITES: Nil Introducing the fundamentals of design exploration, this subject takes an interdisciplinary approach to foundation design studies. Through the discussion of key concepts and terminology in design and visual problem solving students will develop a solid foundation for future study. By examining context and meaning across different disciplines and time periods students will learn to think critically about and develop a universal perspective on the relationship between design and culture. Students will develop skills fundamental to effective studio practice by engaging in practical design exercises and course work. Students will explore and identify the philosophical, economic, ethnographic, social, ethical and environmental underpinnings that influenced the initiation and growth of the 20th century design industry. Working individually and in design teams, students will create a proposal, marketing plan and present an innovative design experience. Marketing Plan group work 40% The Pitch 60% SUBJECT: Illumination CODE: IDLGH201A CREDIT POINTS: 10 CONTACT HRS: 4 hpw PREREQUISITES: Nil This subject provides students the opportunity to further develop their creative and technical knowledge, covering advanced aspects of lighting design for interior applications. Students will explore the powerful impact of illumination on space and how it is used to articulate both the functional and creative requirements of a design brief. This subject will include a three week industry placement. There is an emphasis on investigation into innovation and emerging retail trends for food and beverage, specialty and consumer services. Research 40% Design project 60% SUBJECT: Studio 1 Identity CODE: IDSTU101A CREDIT POINTS: 10 CONTACT HRS: 5 hpw PREREQUISITES: DEDES101A In this first of five studio subjects, students will investigate the relationship of people to spaces and explore how meaning and social identity are constructed through spatial experiences. The subject will engender students curiosity, enthusiasm and appreciation of design as a human centred activity. Minor project 40% SUBJECT: Visual communication 2 CODE: IDSTU102A CREDIT POINTS: 10 CONTACT HRS: 5 hpw PREREQUISITES: DEDES104A This subject introduces the key technical and graphic approaches required to facilitate clear visual communication of interior design schemes to clients, builders, shopfitters and other design project consultants. Spatial analysis 30% Documentation Portfolio 30% Documentation Portfolio 40% SUBJECT: Materials and surface CODE: IDSTU103A CREDIT POINTS: 10 CONTACT HRS: 4 hpw PREREQUISITES: DEDES102A In this subject students will learn effective research and selection of materials, finishes, furnishings and colours for interior environments. Intrinsic to the research and selection is how design choices and decisions are informed by a range of interrelated factors. 7 SUBJECT: Studio 2 Responsibility CODE: IDSTU201A CREDIT POINTS: 10 CONTACT HRS: 5 hpw PREREQUISITES: IDSTU101A In this second of five design studios, students will critically examine the responsibility of the interior designer in meeting complex needs of stakeholders, within broader contexts including globalisation, changing demographics and other social changes which impact on the way people live and work. Students will undertake design projects related to residential, multi-residential, alternative dwellings, and/or small-scale hospitality and workplace design projects. Minor project 40% SUBJECT: Construction and detailing CODE: IDSTU202A CREDIT POINTS: 10 CONTACT HRS: 4 hpw PREREQUISITES: IDSTU102A & IDSTU103A In this subject students will learn how to design construction details in order to achieve the intent of their overall design schemes. Students will also learn to document a range of design schemes for the purpose of construction by studying methodologies applied to undertake accurate assessments of built interiors for a range of small to medium scale, residential or commercial buildings. Illustrated report 40% SUBJECT: Visual communication 3 CODE: IDSTU203A CREDIT POINTS: 10 CONTACT HRS: 4 hpw PREREQUISITES: IDSTU102A This subject builds on IDSTU102A Visual communication 2 and covers the investigation and application of theory and knowledge for the production of interior design presentations for print and digital media. There is an emphasis on the integration and appropriate selection of CAD software to achieve the desired results for illustration and layout applications. Design project 1 60% Design project 2 40% SUBJECT: Spatial modelling CODE: IDSTU204A CREDIT POINTS: 10 CONTACT HRS: 4 hpw PREREQUISITES: IDSTU102A This subject provides a platform for students to develop the graphic and technical skills needed to design and communicate complex spatial intentions through modelling. This knowledge will be embedded within a framework that emphasises modelling and experimentation as an integral part of the design process. Design project 1 40% Design project 2 60% SUBJECT: Studio 3 Culture CODE: IDSTU205A CREDIT POINTS: 10 CONTACT HRS: 5 hpw PREREQUISITES: IDSTU201A In this third of five interior design studios, students will explore the cultural dimensions in which designers operate, and how designed space both shapes and is shaped by cultural contexts as well as sociological and psychological theories. Minor project 40% SUBJECT: Studio 4 Value CODE: IDSTU301A CREDIT POINTS: 10 CONTACT HRS: 4 hpw PREREQUISITES: IDSTU205A In this fourth of five design studios, students will undertake studio-based enquiry into the value generated for stakeholders by interior design interventions. 8 SUBJECT: Building systems & technology CODE: IDSTU302A CREDIT POINTS: 10 CONTACT HRS: 4 hpw PREREQUISITES: IDSTU202A This subject covers the application of theory and knowledge related to building technologies, environmental systems and construction techniques within the context of commercial and large-scale interior design. Practical project and report 40% Practical project 60% SUBJECT: Design proposal CODE: IDSTU303A CREDIT POINTS: 10 CONTACT HRS: 4 hpw PREREQUISITES: See note below. This subject facilitates the generation of a detailed interior design brief for a medium scale commercial interior design project incorporating complex human needs within larger contexts including business, technical, environmental and social systems. Note: Successful completion of the first 2 years of the degree is a pre-requisite for enrolment into this subject. Client analysis and evaluation 20% Preliminary draft 30% Final design proposal 50% SUBJECT: Digital environments CODE: IDSTU304A CREDIT POINTS: 10 CONTACT HRS: 4 hpw PREREQUISITES: IDSTU204A This subject provides students with the opportunity to investigate advanced features of CAD modelling software, digital technologies and animation tools. Proposal and project plan 20% Preliminary presentation 30% Project demonstration 50% SUBJECT: Studio 5 Relevance CODE: IDSTU305A CREDIT POINTS: 10 CONTACT HRS: 5 hpw PREREQUISITES: See note below. This final design studio is the culmination of the degree and involves the undertaking of a major interior design project within the context of medium-scale multi-use interior environments. The project brief and scope is derived from independent investigation conducted in IDSTU303A Design proposal. Note: Successful completion of the first 2 years of the degree is a pre-requisite for enrolment into this subject. Sketch design presentation 20% Preliminary design presentation 20% Final presentation 60% SUBJECT: Workplace futures CODE: IDWKF201A CREDIT POINTS: 10 CONTACT HRS: 4 hpw PREREQUISITES: Nil In this subject students will be introduced to knowledge and theory about contemporary workplace design as well as examine the key drivers of change and innovation in this field. They will research and analyse case studies including; historical perspectives and the role of interior design in achieving complex organisation and business objectives through and understanding of company brand, culture and strategy. Students will utilise and apply knowledge of the legal obligations of design practice as well as sustainable and ethical business practices necessary to work in and operate a design business.
