2 Professional Recognition ARMA has long harboured ambitions to provide UK professional recognition for members: To help raise the status of the profession both nationally and within institutions To ensure that members are probably recognised for their knowledge and skills To support individuals in their continuous learning and professional development

3 UK Professional Qualifications In April 2014 ARMA launched the first of a suite of 3 qualifications, the Certificate in Research Administration, aimed at colleagues working in UK research organisations The Certificate in Research Management took on its first cohort in October 2014 Students will commence study of the Certificate in the Leadership of Research Management in April 2015 In April 2015 the Certificate in Research Management for colleagues working in Funding Organisations will come on line, followed by the Certificate in the Leadership of Research Management in October 2015

4 Canadian Qualifications ARMA has begun initial work with CAURA to develop Canadian variants of the three ARMA professional qualifications It is envisaged that the Canadian Certificate in Research Administration will launch in Autumn 2015 with the other two qualifications following at 6- monthly intervals i.e. Spring and Autumn 2016 ARMA will take on a service delivery role for CAURA in respect of the qualifications, such that student registration, assessment and monitoring and quality assurance will be undertaken by ARMA

5 CAURA Working Group The CAURA working group met on 19 November to advise on: New units to be developed How the qualifications should be structured The assessment method for each unit of each qualification Training and development provision to support learning on the qualifications Appropriate student support mechanisms

6 Features of the ARMA Professional Qualifications They are work-based professional qualifications requiring students to undertake self-directed learning supported by some guided learning Optional and mandatory units across the range of RMA functions Engagement with units across the research support lifecycle Guided learning webinars, national and regional conferences, Professional Mentor meetings etc.; self-directed learning work shadowing, meetings with colleagues, independent research and reading etc. Assessment via the compilation of work-based evidence and/or written assignments

7 Certificate in Research Administration For research administrators working in an administrative role: The normal completion period to be to 2 years from registration Students will study 6 mandatory units and 2 optional units Each unit will be worth 3-5 credits (e.g hours of learning including guided / self-directed learning and assessment preparation) Attendance at a minimum of 25 hours of approved workshops or seminars

8 UK Certificate in Research Administration: Mandatory Units All required: The Higher Education research funding environment Identifying funding sources Costing and pricing a funding proposal Financial project management Research ethics, integrity and governance Understanding contracts

9 UK Certificate in Research Administration: Optional Units Two required: Supporting the development of a funding proposal Enhancing research impact Human resources and research project management Supporting postgraduate research students Supporting reporting and audit Commercialisation of research

10 Certificate in Research Management For research managers with at least 4 years experience in the majority of areas covered by the mandatory units: The normal completion period to be to 18 months from registration Students will study 5 mandatory units and 1 optional unit Each unit will be worth 3-5 credits (e.g hours of learning including guided / self-directed learning and assessment preparation) Attendance at a minimum of 25 hours of approved workshops and seminars

11 Certificate in Research Management: Mandatory Units All required: Developing and implementing policy and strategy Managing legal and regulatory requirements Optimising unit and organisational performance Supporting the development and implementation of organisational systems and processes Working with management information

12 UK Certificate in Research Management: Optional Units One required: Identifying new opportunities for funding Managing and supporting development of a project portfolio Gender and diversity in research management Understanding the International Research Environment Developing new funding schemes

13 UK Certificate in the Leadership of Research Management For senior managers, aspiring to be Heads of Office and Directors: The normal completion period to be to 18 months to 2 years from registration Students will study 5 mandatory and one optional units Each unit will be worth 3-5 credits (e.g hours of learning including guided / self-directed learning and assessment preparation) Attendance at elements of the ARMA Leadership programme (Conference strand, facilitated discussion days, webinars, overseas study tour) will be required

14 UK Certificate in the Leadership of Research Management: Mandatory Units All required: Delivering excellent research management and administration Research leadership in context Maximising organisational research effectiveness Working with political institutions and public officials Preparing for the future demands of research management and administration

15 UK Certificate in the Leadership of Research Management: Optional Units One required: Contributing to the development of research talent for research excellence Supporting technology transfer Strategic management of HE Enterprise and innovation

16 Student Support Each student identifies a professional mentor to support their engagement with the qualification Students attend the qualification induction workshop as a cohort Students join an online group to enable them to support each other as a cohort

17 Qualification Assessment ARMA will recruit a pool of suitably experienced research managers and administrators to act as assessors for the Certificates in Research Administration, Management and Leadership - full training and support will be provided Students will be required to submit two units for assessment at each sixmonthly assessment deadlines - April and October Assessors will mark student assignments using standardised assessment proformas Students will be marked pass or refer. Re-submission will be allowed Marking of assessed work will be externally quality assured by the awarding organisation
