2 Introduction Welcome to the State of Washington Board of Registration s licensing process for professional land surveyors. One of the requirements to obtain your license in land surveying is to pass the state specific examination developed by the Board that tests on land surveying principles applicable to Washington State. Read this entire Candidate Information Bulletin. It has information you need to complete the exam process. 3 E X A M I N A T I O N S C H E D U L I N G Requirements to Sign Up for an Exam To take your written exam, you need to submit an application for licensure to the Board ( If approved by the Board, you will receive an from National Testing Network with instructions on how to schedule your examination. This will include a username and password that you must have to access the registration process. You must make a reservation in advance to access the testing center and the examination. Testing centers cannot schedule candidates and will not admit walk in candidates. For entry into your exam, you are required to present an original for one of the following approved pieces of identification. Approved identification must be valid (unexpired) and show your name, date of birth and recent photo. Your name and date of birth must match your registration information exactly. Any difference in displayed name or date will not be accepted. If your name is incorrect in our system, please contact us by clicking the Contact Support link on U.S. or Foreign Driver s License U.S. Armed Services ID Card U.S. or Foreign Passport Federal or State Employee ID Card State issued ID Card with photo If you do not possess any of these types of identification, contact the Board offices ( ) to obtain acceptance of alternative forms of identification before scheduling your examination. The written exam fee is $195 and any exam retest is $195. You can pay by credit card online. If you cannot pay by credit card, log into your account at Click on Pay by Money order/cashier s check and print the form you need. Send the completed form, along with your money order or cashier s check, to National Testing Network. In about two weeks you will receive a voucher via that you can use to go online and schedule your exam. Candidates in need of special accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) may request such by contacting the Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors by at engineers@dol.wa.gov or by calling Requests for accommodation must be approved by the Board prior to scheduling the exam.

4 A D M I T T A N C E T O T H E E X A M I N A T I O N Attendance at exam You should plan ahead to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled examination time on the date and location you selected. Plan for possible travel delays such as weather or traffic. Late Arrival Policy Your entrance to the examination is permitted only in the 30 minutes prior to your scheduled testing time. Anyone arriving late will not be admitted and will forfeit their fee and must reschedule the examination. Testing centers cannot schedule appointments. Need Help? 5 E X A M I N A T I O N P R O C E D U R ES Reference Materials The examination is given Open Book. Standard references, textbooks and bound notes are permitted. Loose pages of any type of reference material will not be permitted. A pencil with eraser is permitted. Bound scratch paper will be provided by the site and can be used to perform sketches or calculations to complete the exam. The scratch paper must be left at the exam center upon completion of the exam. You may not write notes in any of the reference material you bring. Calculators You may bring only a calculator from the following approved list: ( Personal Belongings No Weapons No purses, backpacks, hats, caps, visors (with the exception of religious apparel), hooded clothing, coats, shawls, heavy jackets or other personal belongings are allowed in exam rooms. Candidates must remove all jackets, sweaters, scarfs, or other bulky clothing. If you are wearing long sleeves they must be pulled up. National Testing Network assumes no responsibility or liability for any personal items in the facility. No weapons of any kind (guns, knives, tasers, pepper spray, etc.) are allowed in the facility. No Digital Devices Talking No Disruptions No Drinking, Eating, or Smoking Stay Within Your Workstation Breaks No Companions or Visitors No digital devices (cell phones, pagers, mp3 players, data sticks, portable scanning devices, cameras, voice recorders, etc.) are allowed in exam rooms. During the exams, speak politely and only to test proctors and evaluators. Do not speak to other candidates. Raise your hand if you need assistance during an exam. No disruptive behavior or unnecessary noise is allowed. You may be escorted from the room and your exam voided if you are being disruptive. No food or beverages may be brought into the exam facility. (Drinking water is available.) Testing centers are non-smoking facilities. Candidates are not allowed smoke breaks. Candidates and their test items must remain within the boundaries of their assigned workstations. Bending or leaning into someone else s work area is not allowed. You may be escorted from the room and your exam voided if you are disrupting another candidate s exam. No timeout for breaks is given during exams. You must get permission from an evaluator or a test proctor to leave your station. Candidates are not allowed to have companions or visitors in the exam.

6 Rule Violations Any candidates who violate or attempt to violate any of the examination procedures or who attempt, in any way, to circumvent the security of the examination content or admittance procedures will be removed from the examination center. Such conduct will be reported to the Board by National Testing Network. Any verified infraction of these examination procedures may result in invalidation of exam results and/or prohibition from further examination opportunity. F R E Q U E N T L Y A S K E D Q U E S T I O N S How and when do I find out about my exam results? You will be notified by the Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors of your exam results via and USPS mail within 10 business days of your examination. The Board will not report results over the phone. Failing candidates will also receive a brief analysis of how they performed within the subject areas of the examination. Specific performance of test items will not be revealed. Those passing the examination are not provided an exam analysis. What is the passing score? When can I retake an exam? Candidates are required to pass a written exam to be licensed in the state of Washington. The passing score for the written exam is 64. Candidates scoring less than 64 on the written exam must take the entire written exam again. You may take the exam up to three times per calendar year. A retake of an examination is not available until 60 days has elapsed from the failing attempt. After the wait time has elapsed, you may go online and sign up to retake the examination. Additional fees will apply. What is the cancellation and refund policy? Exam fees are non-refundable. Exams can be rescheduled by clicking the Contact Support link on and submitting a support ticket a minimum of 7 calendar days prior to your exam date. Schedule changes are not allowed within 7 days of the exam date. What is the policy on extreme weather and emergency closure? In cases of extreme weather conditions or other emergency situations that warrant closure of any testing center, you will be notified by the testing center as soon as possible. When possible, you will be notified at least two hours before your scheduled time. After you receive notification from the testing center, exams can be rescheduled by clicking the Contact Support link on and submitting a weather reschedule support ticket. Ensuring that your contact information is correct in our system will help us reach you in a timely manner.
