General Concepts Configuration Methods The BTAP supports four main concepts for setting and configuring the BTAP: 1. SMART mode. Use the buttons and LEDs on the BTAP to setup the most common use cases automatically. 2. Web interface. An online WEB interface with the most common manual settings for the BTAP. 3. AT commands. Connect to the BTAP over Ethernet using TCP or direct on Layer 2 and use a terminal like Hyperterminal to issue AT commands. This method is mainly for more advanced settings and use cases and will not be used in this document. All you can do in the Web interface and much more is supported using the AT commands. 4. The SNMP protocol. This will not be used and described in this document. Using the SMART configuration mode If the mode button is pressed within the 5 seconds from power up, the BTAP will enter the SMART configuration mode. The LEDs above the button (marked A, B, C and D) will show which mode is selected. When the preferred mode is selected it must be confirmed by holding the SMART button for two seconds. This will cause the LEDs to start flashing during the operation of the selected mode. There are currently 4 different modes: Mode Description LEDs A B C D 1 Configuration mode A Reset to factory defaults. This will reset the configuration to factory defaults Reset IP settings to factory defaults. This will only reset the IP settings to factory defaults Wait for Automatic configuration - NAP (LED 'C') B A + B B + D
The "Configuration mode" can be used to easily access the BTAP if the PC is using DHCP without having to change the PC IP settings. This mode should only be used when the PC is directly connected to the BTAP and not if the BTAP is connected to a network where there already exists a DHCP server. Enable this mode, then connect the Ethernet cable to the computer. The BTAP will then use the factory IP settings ( / ) and configuration interfaces will be enabled (if earlier disabled). The DHCP server will be enabled until a reboot of the BTAP. Restoring configuration The device can be restored to factory default by either of the following procedures: 1. Issue "AT&F" 2. Execute SMART configuration mode 2 3. Holding the SMART button while powering up/restarting the device and keep it pressed until the green LED is lit. Note: Make sure no BOOTP/TFTP server is running while this is done! LEDs During normal operating mode the LEDs located next to the SMART button is used to indicate the number of active connections using binary format. Number of connections LEDs A B C D 1 A 2 B 3 A+B 4 C 5 A+C 6 B+C 7 A+B+C Using the WEB configuration By default the BTAP has static IP settings which are; IP address: and subnet mask: To access the BTAP by the Web based configuration interface the computer must be set up in the same network, e.g. IP address: and subnet mask: If the BTAP is connected directly to the PC and the PC uses DHCP, the BTAP can be set in configuration mode (SMART Mode 1). Then the BTAP will provide an IP address to the PC and the AP can be reached using the default IP address.
Open a web browser and enter in the address bar. Here you'll find the most common configuration parameters needed to setup a connection. If the device is in factory default, you will not need to login before configuring the unit. Below is an example of the WEB interface.
Reset to factory defaults It is possible to reset to factory settings in 3 different ways. 1. Enter and confirm SMART mode Issue AT&F. 3. Holding the mode button while the BTAP is starting. Note: Make sure that the Ethernet cable is disconnected or that any firmware update program is stopped. Bluetooth Profiles For Ethernet access over Bluetooth the Bluetooth Personal Area Network (PAN) profile is used. In this context there are two important roles: 1. PANU. Pan User Role. This is the normal client role when a Bluetooth device is connected to an Ethernet device. Two PANU devices may connect to each other. Several PANU devices may connect to a Bluetooth Access Point supporting the NAP role (see below). 2. NAP. Network Access Point Role. This is the role when a Bluetooth device is connected to network and support multiple devices to connect using the PANU role. A maximum of 7 simultaneous connections are possible (limitations of Bluetooth). This is the default role for the BTAP.
Supported Use Cases One BTAP connected to one or more Wireless Bridge Ethernet Bluetooth gateways Overview Up to 7 Wireless Bridge Ethernet Bluetooth gateways using the PANU role can be connected to one BTAP. This use case supports several Ethernet devices on each side of the BTAP. How to setup this use case? This use case can be set up by using the SMART button: This is used to transfer data between several Ethernet segments. Power on the BTAP and enter SMART configuration mode 10 (LED B + D) Power on the Wireless Bridge Ethernet Bluetooth gateways and enter SMART configuration mode 7 Wait for the Wireless Bridge Ethernet Bluetooth gateways to connect. When all Wireless Bridge Ethernet Bluetooth gateways (1-7) are connected press SMART button on the BTAP and wait for restart. Wait for the Wireless Bridge Ethernet Bluetooth gateways to connect again.
One BTAP connected to one or more Bluetooth device using the PANU role Overview Up to 7 Bluetooth devices using the PANU role can be connected to one BTAP. This use case supports several Ethernet devices on each side of the BTAP. How to setup this use case? Power on the BTAP. The BTAP must be configured to use the NAP role. Power on the Bluetooth device. The Bluetooth device must be configured to use the PANU role. Wait for the devices to connect and restart.
A PC wireless connected to a BTAP Overview A PC supporting the Bluetooth profile (PANU role) is connected to a BTAP. This might be either a BTAP connected to single device or a BTAP connected to an Ethernet network with several devices. How to setup this use case? 1. Connect a PC to the BTAP. See section "Using the WEB configuration" for more information on how to connect to the BTAP. 2. Define the Bluetooth connection parameters. The following parameters are required: Required Parameter Comment Value This is the name that will be shown when searching for Bluetooth Name Yes the device from the PC. Packet Policy - Depending on the application requirements. Max Connections Security mode PIN Code Exclude WLAN Channel 1-7 Yes As low as allowed the application, a low value gives better performance. While the number is connected, the BTAP will not be visible or connectable. For best security, limited should be selected. Then it has to be enabled when you want to add a new device to be able to connect to the BTAP. Only used when BT 2.0 devices tries to connect to the BTAP. In some applications it's necessary to avoid some WLAN channels. Up to 3 WLAN channels can be excluded. How to setup the PC is dependent on the Bluetooth solution supported for the PC. Use the Bluetooth GUI to search for a PAN device with the same name as the BTAP. Use the same security settings as setup for the BTAP.
Legal and Regulatory Declaration of Conformity The Anybus Wireless Bridge Ethernet Bluetooth Access Point meets the essential requirements according to article of the following EC-Directive(s): R&TTE Directive 1999/5/EC Effective use of frequency spectrum: EN V1.7.1 ( ) EMC: EN V1.9.2 ( ) EN V2.1.1 ( ) EN :2005 EN : A1:2011 Safety: EN 50371:2002 EN : A11: A1: A12:2011 IEC : A1:2009
