Agenda SRDF overview and history of innovation SRDF/Metro overview SRDF/Metro use cases and benefits SRDF/Metro technology deep dive What s new in SRDF/Metro Q&A 13
Traditional SRDF functionality Active, remote mirroring SRDF solutions traditionally use active, remote mirroring to create consistent copies of data More specifically, SRDF synchronous (SRDF/S) mode maintains a real-time mirror with a paired array With SRDF/S, writes are only acknowledged to the production host when they have been successfully written to both the local and remote array 14
Traditional SRDF functionality SRDF device pairs An SRDF device is essentially a logical device pair R1 devices are members of the device pair at the source (Production) site R1 devices are generally Read/Write accessible to the host R2 devices are members of the device pair at the target (Disaster Recovery) site R2 devices are typically in Read Only mode (Write Disabled) Also various topology combinations, R11, R21, etc. 15
Traditional SRDF functionality Host accessible device states Read/Write R1 R2 Read Only Write Disabled To access the R2 device of a traditional SRDF relationship, a manual split, failover, or swap is typically required to write enable the R2 device to accept host writes Previously, Cluster Enabler (SRDF/CE) has also been used for this purpose SRDF Links 16
Introduction to SRDF/Metro New device pair states With SRDF/Metro, the SRDF R2 device will now also be Read/Write accessible to the host With both the R1 and R2 devices being accessible, the host (or hosts in the case of a cluster) may now write to both R1 and R2 devices R2 will take on the External Identity of the paired R1 device (geometry, device WWN, serial, reservations, etc.) Includes device attributes standard Multi-Pathing software (MPIOs) will utilize to identify a device across multiple paths 17
Introduction to SRDF/Metro Consistency, single & clustered hosts SRDF/Metro ensures that each copy remains current, consistent, and addresses any write conflicts between the paired devices Host I/Os might be issued by a single host, with multi-pathing software directing them to one side or the other of the SRDF device pair Alternatively, the host I/Os might be issued by different hosts accessing the SRDF device pair in a clustered environment 18
Introduction to SRDF/Metro SRDF/Metro examples Single Host Multi-Pathing software Host Cluster Read/Write Active-Active Read/Write Read/Write Active-Active Read/Write SRDF/Metro SRDF/Metro R1 R2 R1 R2 R2 19
Broad support matrix 20 (Note: SRDF/Metro Support Matrix is 18+ pages long )
SRDF/Metro resiliency Bias and Witness functionality SRDF/Metro supports two resiliency features which work together to protect your production environment should issues arise: Witness resiliency allows an array or software-based witness to monitor the state of the SRDF/Metro configuration and facilitate the appropriate action to ensure continued device availability to hosts Bias is a low level microcode feature which prevents data inconsistencies between the two sides of the SRDF device pair and avoids split-brain related complications 21
SRDF/Metro resiliency Introduction to Witness functionality A configured witness acts as a cluster quorum device available to both arrays of an SRDF/Metro configuration: Each witness is a repository for configuration state and status information such as device status, link states, and array component availability Should an availability issue occur, each array will utilize this information to best determine continued device availability to the host environment When SRDF/Metro has been configured with witness protection, a device pair state of ActiveActive will result 22
SRDF/Metro resiliency Virtual and array based witness functionality Virtual Witness (vwitness) is packaged as a VMware ESXi server virtual appliance (vapp) with IP connectivity to each paired array Two vwitness vapp options are available: Solutions Enabler (recommended for just vwitness) Unisphere (where GUI management is also required) Array witness requires a 3 rd VMAX, VMAX3, VMAX AF, or PowerMax array, remote adapter (RA) ports, SRDF Groups, and network links to the paired SRDF/Metro arrays 23
SRDF/Metro resiliency Witness examples Virtual Witness (vapp) Array Witness IP Connectivity IP Connectivity Witness SRDF Group Witness SRDF Group SRDF/Metro SRDF/Metro R1 Active-Active R2R2 R1 Active-Active R2R2 24
SRDF/Metro resiliency Witness best practices for production Configure multiple witnesses with 2 minimum for redundancy Utilize independent fault domains for each witness to include power and network domains Witnesses should not be placed in the same fault domains as the protected SRDF/Metro configuration Locate each witness within 40 ms network latency of paired arrays vwitness offers flexibility & redundancy due to IP protocol Spread vwitness installations over multiple servers for redundancy 25
SRDF/Metro resiliency Understanding Bias functionality (when a witness is not available/configured) If an SRDF link or device pair becomes Not Ready due to either a planned activity or unplanned event (a.k.a. Split Brain): SRDF/Metro must respond by choosing one side of the SRDF device pair to remain accessible to the hosts The other side of the SRDF device pair is then made inaccessible to the host and prevent data corruption Bias alone is not sufficient to protect a production environment and is recommended only for lab/test environments or when access to all configured witnesses in the environment has been lost 26
SRDF/Metro extended DR with SRDF/A Primary & secondary site DR protection Provides continuous, out of region asynchronous Disaster Recovery (DR) protection R11 SRDF/Metro R21 SRDF/A Only Active-Active R2 SRDF/A Only SRDF/A Only R2 27
Agenda SRDF overview and history of innovation SRDF/Metro overview SRDF/Metro use cases and benefits SRDF/Metro technology deep dive What s new in SRDF/Metro Q&A 28
NEW Device add/remove from active SRDF/Metro group Feature Add existing (non-rdf) devices to an active SRDF/Metro group while a host is actively using the volumes being added Remove devices being protected using SRDF/Metro Example: Add devices Benefits Achieve zero RPO & RTO for existing applications using SRDF/Metro Parity with other SRDF modes R1 SRDF/M Group R2 Use cases Protect non-rdf devices visible to the host using SRDF/Metro Remove devices visible to the host from SRDF/Metro protection 29
NEW Device move in/out of active SRDF/Metro group Feature Take an existing SRDF pair and move it into a SRDF/Metro group Take an existing SRDF pair in a SRDF/Metro group and move it to a SRDF/S or SRDF/Adaptive Copy Mode group Caveats Not applicable to devices using SRDF/A Example: Move SRDF/S devices into SRDF/Metro group Benefits Minimize initial sync and time to consistency Parity with other SRDF modes R1 SRDF/M Group R2 Use cases Protect existing SRDF/S or SRDF/Adaptive Copy Mode devices visible to the host using SRDF/Metro Move devices protected via SRDF/Metro to SRDF/S or SRDF/Adaptive Copy Mode protection R1 SRDF/S Group R2 30
Movepair Exempt functionality Previous software releases have not allowed movepair operations into an SRDF/Metro group (while suspended or active) Source Movepair SRDF group and devices must be Adaptive Copy or Synchronous modes (not SRDF/A) Target SRDF/Metro group may now be Active with device pair states of Suspended, SyncInProg, ActiveActive, or ActiveBias While synchronising, R1 devices will remain host accessible and R2 will remain inaccessible until these devices reach active mode 31
NEW DR and Fault-Aware Witness Feature Select the winning array out of the alive arrays as follows (in order): Host Cluster 1. Array with SRDF/A leg 2. Array with sync d SRDF/A leg 3. Array with greater than 50% supporting RDF/RA directors Applicable to both physical & virtual witness R22 Witness Benefits Select the best array to remain accessible to host for R/W operations during split-brain scenarios R11 SRDF/Metro R2 Use cases Witness deciding winning array in SRDF/Metro during failure conditions SRDF/A R22 32
NEW DR and Fault-Aware Witness In the event of a fault, the two sides of a witness-protected SRDF/Metro session will: Negotiate to determine the side better suited to continue servicing host IOs Priority will now be given to the side with a more available DR or system configuration That side will then become the winner side, reported as the R1 New witness will now take on bias responsibilities. User will no longer have the option to change bias location in active mode Set bias on suspend renamed to keep ( suspend -keep R2) 33
