3 Using 10GbE Switches for all OmniCube Networks The default deployment for an OmniCube system uses a 1GbE switched network for the Management network, while the Storage and Federation network traffic uses a switched (or optionally a direct-connected) 10GbE network. As part of this normal deployment, the OmniCube deployment software automatically creates a 1GbE Management network vswitch. However, you might decide to use a 10GbE network for all Federation network traffic. In such cases, you cannot use a direct-connected 10GbE network, you must use a switched network and use VLANs to separate the OmniCube networks as shown in Figure-1. Figure-1 All-10GbE 2-OmniCube Federation The following procedure describes how to deploy OmniCube into environments that use all-10gbe switched networks for all network traffic. Important: Before using this procedure, follow the procedures described in OmniCube Configuration and Management, Chapter "Deploying OmniCube", up to: Step 3: Performing the Initial ESXi Host Configuration. You need the following information and resources: VLAN IDs - The example procedures in the following sections use the sample names specified here. You can use any VLAN IDs that you prefer: VLAN M for the OmniCube Management network. This must be on the same VLAN and subnet as the OmniCube ESXi Host. 1
4 VLAN S for the OmniCube Storage network. (Optionally, this is also used for the Federation network.) VLAN F [Optional] for the OmniCube Federation network. You can also use the same VLAN ID for both the Storage network and the Federation network. IP Address In addition to the 5 static IP addresses specified in OmniCube Configuration and Management, you need an additional, temporary, static IP address. This address is required only during configuration. MTU Assuming all devices in your network are set to MTU 9000, configure all switches and end nodes on the network as MTU If any devices in your network use MTU 1500, you might need to configure only the Management network to also use MTU Otherwise you might not be able to deploy OmniCube into your network and create a Federation. (The first deployment succeeds, but subsequent deployments will fail.) For example, you might have a 10GbE network that is entirely configured for MTU 9000, except for a WAN optimizer that is configured as MTU 1500, you must also configure your OmniCube Management network as MTU Configuring the ESXi Host You must configure the ESXi host to use only the 10GbE vmnics. Do this on all OmniCube systems before you deploy an OmniCube. In OmniCube Configuration and Management Chapter 2, the procedure "Step 3 - Performing the Initial ESXi Host Configuration" contains a sub-step 6, which reads as follows: 6: Select Network Adapters and enable only vmnic2 and vmnic3 (these are the 1GbE networking ports numbered 3 and 4). Make sure that vmnic0 and vmnic1 are not selected for the host s default management network. For an all-10gbe network, You must do the opposite of this instruction when you configure the network adapters for the ESXi host: 1. Select and enable vmnic0 and vmnic1 (10GbE ports). (See Figure-2). 2. Make sure that vmnic2 and vmnic3 (1GbE ports) are not selected. This ensures that the Management network is created on a 10GbE port. 2
5 Figure-2 Select the 10GbE vmnics 3. Complete all the other ESXi configuration steps, as described in OmniCube Configuration and Management Chapter 2, the procedure "Step 3 - Performing the Initial ESXi Host Configuration". 4. You can now add the OmniCube to vcenter as an ESXi host. Follow the procedure titled: Adding the OmniCube Systems as ESXi Hosts in OmniCube Configuration and Management. The next step is to configure virtual switches (vswitches) using vsphere Client. Initial Configuration of Virtual Switches Do this step on all OmniCube systems before you deploy an OmniCube. In OmniCube Configuration and Management Chapter 2, the section titled: "Virtual Switches for the OmniCube Systems" describes how to set up two vswitches for a typical Federation network as follows: vswitch0-1gbe Management network. vswitch1-10gbe Storage and Federation networks. If you use an all-10gbe network, you need only a single vswitch. However, the OmniCube deployment creates vswitch0 automatically and assigns it to the Management network. To correct this for an all- 10GbE network: Configure the existing vswitch0 as described in Initial Configuration for vswitch0 on page 3. Configure a new vswitch1 as described in Initial Configuration for the 10GbE vswitch1 on page 4. After you deploy OmniCube you will reconfigure these vswitches to their final, all-10gbe configuration. Initial Configuration for vswitch0 To perform the initial configuration of vswitch0: 1. Select an undeployed OmniCube system (ESXi host) in the vsphere Client inventory panel and click the Configuration tab. 2. Select Networking in the left panel to display the vswitch configuration. You must remove vmnic1. 3
6 Figure-3 Unconfigured vswitch0 3. Click the Properties link above vswitch0 to open the vswitch0 Properties dialog. 4. Click the Network Adapters tab and select vmnic1 then click Remove. 5. Click Yes to confirm that you want to remove vmnic1. 6. Click the Ports tab, select vswitch (Summary: 120 Ports) and then click Edit. 7. Click the General tab and change the value of MTU to 9000, unless you have any devices on this network that use 1500, in which case, leave this value at Click OK to return to the vswitch0 Properties dialog. The Advanced Properties panel should show MTU: 9000 (or 1500, if you have devices that use 1500). 9. Click Management Network (Summary: vmotion and IP...) in the Ports tab and then click Edit. 10. Click the General tab and: Select the VLAN ID in the Port Properties panel. (The Management network must be on the same VLAN and subnet as the OmniCube ESXi host.)
