To investigate this, in this pape we popose a tanspotation model on two coupled netwoks with bandwidth shaing. We find that the fee-flow state and the congestion state can coexist in the two coupled netwoks, and the fee-flow path and congestion path can coexist in each netwok. Consideing thee bandwidth-shaing mechanisms, andom, assotative and disassotative couplings, we also find that the tanspotation capacity of the netwok only depends on the coupling mechanism, and the faction of coupled links only affects the pefomance of the system in the congestion state, such as the taveling time. In addition, with assotative coupling, the tanspotation capacity of the system will decease significantly. Howeve, the disassotative coupling has little influence on the tanspotation capacity of the system, which povides a good stategy to save bandwidth. Futhemoe, a theoetical method is developed to obtain the bandwidth usage of each link, based on which we can obtain the congestion tansition point exactly. Intoduction To meet the needs of communication development, moe and moe communication netwoks have been built ove the last few yeas. Howeve, in eality, due to the exobitant cost of laying special lines and thei enegy supplies, a new communication netwok often attaches to some powe netwoks, o patially couples with a existing communication netwok. Obviously, this constuction mechanism makes the new netwok does not have a stand-alone function and efficiency. Fo the fome case, a cascading failue caused by the intedependence between the powe netwok and the communication netwok could destoy the whole system moe easily than that without coupling 1. The so-called intedependent netwoks ae the popula model to pefom such study 2,3. Fo the latte case, on one hand, the coupling of two o moe communication netwoks enables the message, opinion, o othe infomation to spead fom one netwok to anothe, which could facilitate the speading and the emegence of coopeation 4 9. On the othe hand, shaing some physical devices could educe the tanspotation efficiency of the communication netwoks. Fo example, in eality, some communication companies often shae some communication lines to save costs, although the nodes in these netwoks may be totally diffeent. Within the pocess of communication, the common lines will shae a bandwidth. When the common bandwidth has been used by one netwok, the othe netwoks can not use it at the same time. Uncoveing the effects of this coupling on tanspotation dynamic will be helpful fo eal-wold communication netwok design and bandwidth allocation, which is the focus of this pape. basic model of tanspotation dynamic on netwoks is the one poposed by Ohia and Sawatai 10. In this model, at each time step, infomation packets ae geneated with destination addesses, and tansfeed fom one node to anothe towad thei destinations following the given outings. With the inceasing of the packet geneation ate, this model can exhibit a phase tansition fom the fee-flow state to the congestion state 11. Based on this model, the dynamical popeties of the communication system have been studied widely 12 15, and a lot of outing stategies have been poposed to impove the tanspotation efficiency of a given netwok 16, such as inceasing the tanspotation capacity and deceasing the taveling time Some models and outing stategies have also been studied in the so-called inteconnected netwoks Howeve, the inteconnected netwoks in these models can all be undestood as a lage netwok with community stuctue, the shaing of physical devices between diffeent netwoks has not been taken into account. To appeciate what the shaing of physical devices in communication netwoks will mean, we will conside two tanspotation pocesses display on two netwoks simultaneously with some link coupling. The tanspotation in the two netwoks is limited by the link bandwidth. That is each link can only delive a limited numbe of infomation packets at each time step Fo two coupled links, they shae a common bandwidth limitation, which just epesents the shaing of physical devices between the two communication netwoks. We will show that the tanspotation capacity of the two netwoks could
2 be diffeent, i.e., the fee-flow state and the congestion state can exist in the two netwoks, espectively. By the analysis of diffeent coupling mechanisms, we find that the congestion tansition point is dependent on the coupling mechanism, and independent of the faction of coupled links. Based on that, we demonstate that the disassotative coupling is a good stategy fo saving bandwidth, fo which we can use the bandwidth of one netwok to suppot the tanspotation of the two netwoks without educing the tanspotation capacity of both netwoks. ll these esults ae established though analytic theoy with numeical suppot. Results Model The tanspotation system is fomed by two netwoks and B with the same size N and degee distibution. t each time step, each node geneates a new infomation packet with pobability, i.e., N new packets in each netwok. The newly geneated packet will be placed at the end of the queue of its oigin node with a andomly chosen destination. t each time step, each node will delive the packets in its queue towad thei destinations, if the coesponding links have fee bandwidth. Hee, the bandwidth of a link is the imum numbe of packets that can be deliveed though the link at each time step. Without loss of geneality, we set the bandwidth to be 1 fo all links, i.e., only one packet can be deliveed at each time step. If the coesponding bandwidth limit is eached, the packet has to stay in the queue. The tanspotation of a node will be ove, when none of its links have fee bandwidth. Fo simplicity, all the packets ae deliveed in the netwoks following the shotest paths fom the oigins to the destinations. When a packet eaches its destination, it will be emoved fom the system. To epesent the coupling of the two netwoks, we assume that a faction β of the links of netwok ae coupled with the links of netwok B one by one (see Fig.1). In the tanspotation pocess, two coupled links ae consideed as one link, i.e., shaing bandwidth. To pesent the pioity of the tanspotation pocess, we assume that netwok uses the common bandwidth fist at each time step, and the emaining bandwidth (if any) can be used by netwok B. In this pape we will study thee coupling mechanisms, andom, assotative and disassotative couplings. Fo andom coupling, all the coupled links ae chosen andomly fom the two netwoks. Fo assotative (disassotative) coupling, the link with the lagest betweenness of netwok is coupled with the link with the lagest (smallest) betweenness of netwok B, the link with the second lagest betweenness of netwok is coupled with the link with the second lagest (smallest) betweenness of netwok B, and so on. Figue 1. schematic of two communication netwoks with link coupling. The two netwoks ae pesented by oange and geen, espectively. The pais of links indicated by the gey aeas ae the coupled links of the two netwoks. In the tanspotation pocess, two coupled links will shae a common bandwidth, which can be used by both of the two netwoks but with a pioity. Measues To descibe the tansition fom the fee-flow state to the congestion state, we use the following ode paamete η = lim t S N t = lim S(t+ t) S(t). (1) t N t Hee, S(t) is the total numbe of packets in the netwok at time step t, and means the aveage fo diffeent t but the same t. It is easy to know that the imum value of S/ t is N, which gives the imum η = 1. Below the citical point c, S/ t = 0, i.e., at each time step, the numbe of packets aiving at thei destinations is equal to N. 2/10
3 s long as one link can not delive all the packets that need to be deliveed, the ode paamete η will be lage than zeo and the system will tun into the congestion state. Theefoe, to study this congestion tansition, we also need to measue the tanspotation state of each link quantitatively. Hee, we use the bandwidth usage µ i j to epesent the taffic load of link i j, which defines as the aveage numbe of packets passing though link i j at each time step. Mathematically, it can be expessed as µ i j = t 2 t=t1 S i j (t) t 2 t 1 + 1, (2) whee S i j (t) is the numbe of packets passing though link i j at the time step t. Since S i j (t) can only take value 1 o 0 in ou model, the ange of the bandwidth usage µ i j is fom 0 to 1. It s clea that the lage the bandwidth usage is, the heavie the load is. When µ i j 1, the link would be congested. Tanspotation on single netwok Fo the convenience of analysis and discussion, we study the case β = 0 fist. In this case, thee is no inteaction between the two netwoks, so we just conside one of them. To model the topological popeties of eal communication netwoks, we use Baabási-lbet (B) netwok in the simulation 27. s shown in Fig.2 (a), the ode paamete η will take a non-zeo value when the packet geneation ate exceeds a citical value c, which is often called the tanspotation capacity of the system (a) ij (b) = 1 = 3 = 0.1 = b ij fequency (c) = 1 = 3 = 0.1 = Figue 2. The simulation esults fo tanspotation on single netwoks (β = 0). In the simulation, the netwoks we used ae B netwoks with aveage degee k = 4 and size N = (a) The ode paamete η as a function of the packet geneation ate. µ is the bandwidth usage of the link with the lagest betweenness. (b) The bandwidth usages of links µ i j ae plotted as a function of thei betweennesses b i j. The coesponding lines ae obtained by eqs.(4) and (16). Fo small packet geneation ate, the bandwidth usage of link inceases appoximate linealy with the betweenness, which also satisfies eq.(17) (see the cases = 1 and 3). (c) The fequency counts of the bandwidth usages µ shown in (b). The slop of the dash line is 2.8. To get a bette undestanding of this congestion tansition, we sot the bandwidth usages µ i j of all the links by thei betweennesses b i j in Fig.2 (b). Togethe with the fequency counts of these bandwidth usages shown in Fig.2 (c), one can find that when the bandwidth usages of most of links ae vey small, the bandwidth usage of the link with the lagest betweenness µ will close to the imum value 1. Fom eq.(1), we can also find that only one link with µ 1 will make the system go into the congestion state. Theefoe, the tansition point c of the system is just the point above which µ = 1 (see Fig.2 (a)). Fom this point of view, we can obtain the theoetical tansition point fo Fig.2, c = (see Sec. Method fo details), which is in ageement with simulation esults well. Tanspotation on coupled netwoks Since netwok has the pioity in using the common bandwidth, the coupling will not affect its communication pefomance. Thus, we focus now on the pefomance of netwok B in diffeent coupling mechanisms. In Fig.3, we give the ode paamete η as a function of the packet geneation ate fo diffeent coupling factions β. We can find that fo assotative coupling, a vey weak coupling could educe the tanspotation capacity c of netwok B significantly. Howeve, the andom and disassotative coupling, especially disassotative coupling, do not have seious effect on the tanspotation capacity c of netwok B. This indicates that if the taffic of netwok B is not so heavy, we need not to build links just fo netwok B and all its communication task can be attached to netwok. This povides a good stategy to save costs fo building new communication netwok. To figue out the capacity of netwok B, we also take account of the bandwidth usage as that of single netwoks shown in Fig.4. Fo andom and assotative couplings, we can find that the aveage bandwidth usage µ of netwok B will deviate 3/10

The ode paamete η as a function of the packet geneation ate fo diffeent coupling factions β. In the simulation, both netwoks and B ae B netwoks with the same aveage degee k =4 and size N = (a) Random coupling. (b) ssotative coupling. (c) Disassotative coupling. fom that of netwok with the inceasing of the packet geneation ate (see Fig.4 (a)). Howeve, the aveage bandwidth usage fo the disassotative coupling almost coincides with that of netwok. This indicates that the disassotative coupling does not add too much estiction to netwok B in using the common bandwidth, and makes the bandwidth allocation in the coupled system moe easonable. This explains why the system with the disassotative coupling shown in Fig.3 has the lagest tanspotation capacity. Since the two netwoks have the same stuctue and taffic load, the coupling will not affect the tanspotation in netwok B, befoe the aveage bandwidth usage of netwok exceeds 0.5. Howeve, the simulation esults shown in Fig.4 (a) contadict this. ddessing this issue, we conside the heteogeneity of the bandwidth usage as that of single netwok. Fo netwok B, the bandwidth of a link is esticted by the coupling, and only the emaining bandwidth fom netwok can be used. It is clea that the link with the lagest bandwidth usage µ in netwok has the smallest emaining bandwidth. Fo convenience, we denote the bandwidth usage of this link in netwok B as µ. In Fig.4, we give the bandwidth usages µ and µ as a function of the packet geneation ate. We can find that the bandwidth usage µ will decease with the inceasing of, when the packet geneation ate exceeds a value, at which µ + µ 1. In this way, the citical value c obtained by µ + µ = 1 just is the congestion tansition point of netwok B, since it is smalle than that obtained by the link with the lagest betweenness in netwok B. Fo the simulation esults shown in Figs.3 and 4, µ only depends on the coupling mechanism. This explains that the congestion tansition point c B in Fig.3 takes the same value fo diffeent β. Futhemoe, using µ + µ = 1, we can also obtain the tansition point c B fo the andom, assotative and disassotative couplings, that is 78, 37 and fo the simulation esults shown in Fig.3 (see Sec. Method fo details). In the congestion state ll the above esults suggest as long as only one link is congested, the system will go into the congestion state. This means that in the congestion state not all the packets will be stuck, and the ones with a outing containing no congested links can be deliveed as usual. In othe wods, the fee-flow and congested paths can coexist in the system. This is a quite common phenomenon in eal communication netwoks. Fo assotative coupling, all the links with lage bandwidths ae chosen as the coupled links, so with the inceasing of, the coupled links ae always congested fistly. In this case, we can classify the congested and fee-flow links simply by whethe o not they ae coupled links. Theefoe, we take the assotative coupling as an example to show the coexistence of the fee-flow paths (containing no coupled links) and the congested paths (containing coupled links) in the system. In Fig.5 (a), we give the faction f of the packets that each thei destinations by passing though one o moe coupled links in netwok B at each time step fo assotative coupling. If the congestion happens in each link simultaneously, f will be a constant depending on the coupling faction β and the link betweenness, egadless of the system is in the fee-flow state o the congestion state. Howeve, the esults of Fig.5 (a) show that when the packet geneation ate exceeds c B, f deceases with the inceasing of the packet geneation ate. This indicates that the fee-flow and congested paths coexist in the congestion state. Futhemoe, in the congestion state, all the packets passing though some coupled links in netwok B will wait a long time fo being deliveed, o neve each thei destinations ( > c ). Since only the packets that can each thei destinations contibute to the statistics of the aveage taveling time T, this ceates an illusion that the packets will take less time to each thei destinations, when the packet geneation ate closes to c (see Fig.5 (b)). s above analysis, this does not mean the 4/10

The imum bandwidth usage µ of the link with the lagest betweenness in netwok, and the bandwidth usage µ of its coupled link in netwok B as a function of the packet geneation ate. In this case, the link with the lagest betweenness is not always chosen as the coupled link. Howeve, since this link always gives the smallest congestion tansition point c, fo the aveage of many ealizations, we can teat the esults as that the link with the lagest betweenness is always the coupled link. (c) ssotative coupling. The imum bandwidth usages µ of the links with the lagest betweennesses in netwoks and B, which ae coupled with each othe, as a function of the packet geneation ate. (d) Disassotative coupling. The imum bandwidth usage µ of the link with the lagest betweenness in netwok, and the bandwidth usage µ of its coupled link in netwok B, whose betweenness is the smallest one in netwok B, as a function of the packet geneation ate. In the simulation, both netwoks and B ae B netwoks with the same aveage degee k =4 and size N = taffic condition is impoved with the inceasing of the packet geneation ate, but the coexistence of the fee-flow paths and the congested paths in the congestion state. Fo the othe two coupling mechanisms, this coexistence can also be found in the congestion state. Howeve, not all the congested links ae the coupled links, so one needs to make a distinction between the fee-flow and congestion links by othe paametes, such as bandwidth usage. The esults ae simila, so we do not go into this in detail. Conclusions In this pape we have poposed a tanspotation model to study the bandwidth shaing between diffeent communication netwoks. Two coexistence phenomena have been found in this simple tanspotation model, both of which eflect the common poblems in daily communication. One is the coexistence of the fee-flow state and the congestion state in the two netwoks, the othe one is the coexistence of the fee-flow path and the congestion path in each netwok. ccoding to ou analysis, the fome is caused by the pioity of the two netwoks in using the common bandwidth, the latte is due to the heteogeneity of the taffic load on each link. We also develop a theoetical method to obtain the congestion tansition points of the two netwoks, which ae in ageement with the simulation esults vey well. Both the theoy and the simulation esults indicate that the tanspotation capacity of the system depends on the coupling mechanism of the system, no matte how many numbe of links ae coupled with each othe. Futhemoe, we find that the disassotative coupling has little influence on the tanspotation capacity of the system, which povides a good stategy to save bandwidth. We also point out that the coexistence of the fee-flow path and the congested path in the congestion state could ceate the illusion that the taffic condition of the system is impoved with the packet geneation 5/10

In the simulation, both netwoks and B ae B netwoks with the same aveage degee k =4 and size N = (a) The faction f of the packets that each thei destinations by passing though one o moe coupled links in netwok B fo assotative coupling. (b) The aveage taveling time T as a function of the packet geneation ate fo assotative coupling. (a) (b) ate inceases. We think that ou theoetical method can also be used in othe tanspotation models with simila mechanisms, and the coesponding esults can help us undestand the popeties of the tanspotation pocess in eal-wold communication system. Method To solve this model, we conside a single netwok fist, which could give the popeties of the two netwoks when thee is no coupling. Fo a netwok with size N, thee ae N(N 1) oigin-destination pais in the netwok. Theefoe, at each time step we can find a new packet in each oigin-destination pai with pobability /(N 1). s we know, the betweenness of a link is the numbe of the shotest paths passing though it. Hence, in the fee-flow state, the pobability that thee ae n new packets waiting at node i fo being deliveed though link i j at each time step is p n (b i j )= ( bi j n )( N 1 ) n ( 1 N 1 ) bi j n. (3) Hee, b i j is the betweenness of link i j. When thee is moe than one packet in these paths, some collision may occu in the tanspotation of packets befoe they each node i. s a esult, p n (b i j ) will be slightly lage than the simulation esults fo lage and n. But it does not affect the theoetical esults much, since p n tends to zeo quickly with the inceasing of n. Excluding the new aiving packets, thee may be some othe packets waiting fo being deliveed though link i j at node i, which emain fom the last time step. We denote the numbe distibution of these packets as λ n (b i j ). Using the two distibutions p n (b i j ) and λ n (b i j ), the bandwidth usage of link i j can be expessed as µ i j (b i j ) = p n (b i j )+ p 0 (b i j ) λ n (b i j ) n=1 n=1 = 1 p 0 (b i j )+ p 0 (b i j )[1 λ 0 (b i j )] = 1 p 0 (b i j )λ 0 (b i j ). (4) 6/10
7 Obviously, this means that when thee ae aleady some packets o some new aiving packets at node i waiting fo being deliveed though link i j, the bandwidth of link i j will be used at this time step. To obtain µ i j (b i j ), we must get λ n (b i j ) fist, which takes the same distibution fo each time step in the steady state. Thus, consideing two successive time steps, it is easy to find λ n (b i j ) follows the ecusion fomula, λ 0 = p 0 λ 1 +(p 1 + p 0 )λ 0, λ 1 = p 0 λ 2 + p 1 λ 1 + p 2 λ 0, λ 2 = p 0 λ 3 + p 1 λ 2 + p 2 λ 1 + p 3 λ 0, (5) (6) (7). λ n = n+1 p i λ n+1 i,n>0. i=0 (8) These equations hold fo any betweenness b i j, so we omit b i j fo simplify. In addition, as a distibution, the pobability λ n also satisfies n i=0 λ i = 1. (9) The goup of eqs.(5)-(9) can be witten as a matix equation PΛ= C, whee P is an(n+1) (n+1) matix, 1 p 1 p 0 p p 2 1 p P= p n p n 1 1 p 1 p Λ and C ae column vectos with n + 1 enties, λ 0 λ 1 Λ =., λ n 1 C = λ n. (10), (11) (12) (13) Fo any given n, we can get λ 0 fom eqs.(10)-(13) by Came s ule. We take n=1,2,3 as examples, λ 0 = λ 0 = p 0 1 p 1, n=1, p 2 0 (1 p 1 ) 2 p 0 p 2, n=2, (14) (15) λ 0 = p 3 0 (1 p 1 ) 3 2p 0 p 2 (1 p 1 ) p 2 0 p, n=3. (16) 3 Then, substituting λ 0 into eq.(4), we can get the bandwidth usage. Since p n tends to zeo quickly with the inceasing of n, the bandwidth usage µ i j obtained by eqs.(4) and (16) has aleady ageed with the simulation esults shown in Fig.2 (b) well. 7/10
8 Fo N and lage b i j, ignoing p n with n 1, it is easy to find that eq.(4) can be witten in a simple fom µ i j = b i j N 1. (17) This esult has also been found in ef. 23,25 fom othe pespective. Hee, we want to point out that eq.(17) is the uppe limit of the bandwidth usage, and means that all the packets do not clash befoe they aive at node i. Theefoe, the bandwidth usage obtained by eq.(17) will deviate fom the tue value fo links with lage betweennesses. In addition, eq.(17) can also be obtained by the fist moment of the distibution (3). Stictly speaking, the bandwidth usage µ i j obtained by eq.(4) will always be smalle than 1 fo < N 1. To obtain the tansition point indicated by the simulation, we can expess the congestion condition of a link as µ i j = 1 ε, (18) whee ε is a constant much smalle than 1. This means that when the bandwidth usage µ i j is close to 1, the link will be congested. Using this equation, we can obtain the congestion condition fo each link. The tansition point of the system coesponds to that of the link with the lagest betweenness b i j = b. Fo the case shown in Fig.2, b = and N = 1000, using ε = 10 2, we can find c = 0.112, which agees with the simulation esults well. In addition, we can also get the tansition point c = 73 by eq.(17). Obviously, this esult is much smalle than the simulation esults. Fo the two coupled netwoks, consideing the two netwoks as two single netwoks, we can get the bandwidth usage of a link µ i j in netwok and its coupled link µ i j in netwok B by eq.(4). In this way, the congestion condition of the coesponding coupled link in netwok B is µ i j + µ i j = 1 ε. (19) Using eq.(4), we have p 0 (b i j )λ 0 (b i j )+ p 0 (b i j )λ 0(b i j )=1+ε, (20) Hee, b i j is the betweenness of link i j in netwok and b i j is the betweenness of its coupled link in netwok B. The tansition point of netwok B coesponds to b i j = b and b i j = b, b and b min fo andom, assotative and disassotative couplings, espectively. Fo the netwoks used in the simulation of Figs.3 and 4, b = 13656, b min = 24 and b = Then, we can get the tansition point by letting ε = 10 2, the esults ae c = c = 0.112, and c B = 78, 37 and fo andom, assotative and disassotative couplings, espectively.
