Statement 1040 Warning This equipment must be installed and maintained by service personnel as defined by AS/NZS Incorrectly connecting this equipment to a general-purpose outlet could be hazardous. The telecommunications lines must be disconnected 1) before unplugging the main power connector or 2) while the housing is open, or both. Statement

2 Safety Chapter 2 Warning This product requires short-circuit (overcurrent) protection, to be provided as part of the building installation. Install only in accordance with national and local wiring regulations. Statement 1045 Warning During this procedure, wear grounding wrist straps to avoid ESD damage to the card. Do not directly touch the backplane with your hand or any metal tool, or you could shock yourself. Statement 93 Safety Warning Only trained and qualified personnel should be allowed to install, replace, or service this equipment. Statement 1030 Warning This unit is intended for installation in restricted access areas. A restricted access area can be accessed only through the use of a special tool, lock and key, or other means of security. Statement 1017 Warning Before you install, operate, or service the system, read the Site Preparation and Safety Guide. This guide contains important safety information you should know before working with the system. Statement 200 Warning Voltages that present a shock hazard can exist on inline power circuits if interconnections are made by using uninsulated exposed metal contacts, conductors, or terminals. Avoid using such interconnection methods unless the exposed metal parts are in a restricted access location and users and service people who are authorized to access the location are made aware of the hazard. A restricted access area can be accessed only through the use of a special tool, lock and key, or other means of security. 2-2

3 Chapter 2 Preparing the Site Preparing the Site Warning Only trained and qualified personnel should be allowed to install, replace, or service this equipment. Statement 1030 Warning This unit is intended for installation in restricted access areas. A restricted access area can be accessed only through the use of a special tool, lock and key, or other means of security. Statement 1017 This section describes how you can safely and successfully prepare your environment for your Cisco SFS 7008 switch. Read this section carefully before you install your device. Preparing the Physical Environment for the Cisco SFS 7008 Switch Make sure that you have the right cables and sufficient ventilation. Unpack the Cisco SFS 7008 package. Prepare a management workstation, such as a PC running a serial terminal program and a serial cable (included). 2-3

4 Rack-Mounting the Switch Chapter 2 Rack-Mounting the Switch Warning To prevent bodily injury when mounting or servicing this unit in a rack, you must take special precautions to ensure that the system remains stable. The following guidelines are provided to ensure your safety: This unit should be mounted at the bottom of the rack if it is the only unit in the rack. When mounting this unit in a partially filled rack, load the rack from the bottom to the top with the heaviest component at the bottom of the rack. If the rack is provided with stabilizing devices, install the stabilizers before mounting or servicing the unit in the rack. Statement 1006 This section describes how to install the Cisco SFS 7008 switch in an equipment rack. Requirements In addition to the accessories provided with the switch, you should have the following: Number 2 Phillips screwdriver Rack with 6Us of available space Shelf installed in the rack (not provided). The shelf must support the weight of the switch, which can be up to 106 pounds with all possible components installed. Screws appropriate to your rack, which are used to secure the rack handles to the rack posts. Three people are recommended to lift the switch into the rack; however, the procedure can be performed by two people. Note The Cisco SFS 7008 switch weighs up to 106 pounds (fully loaded). 2-4

5 Chapter 2 Rack-Mounting the Switch Rack-Mount Installation To mount the Cisco SFS 7008 switch in a rack: Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 Step 5 Remove the parts and documentation from the box. Remove the packaging from around the switch. Install a shelf for the switch, if you have not already done so. Verify that the shelf can support the weight of the switch, which can be up to 106 pounds with all possible components installed. Determine the direction that the switch will be installed in the rack. The direction will determine which set of rack ears need to be removed. Use a number 2 Phillips screwdriver to remove one set of rack ears, as shown in Figure 2-1: If you determine that the switch will be installed toward the front of the rack, then remove the rack ears from the back of the switch. If you determine that the switch will be installed toward the back of the rack, then remove the rack ears from the front of the switch. 2-5

Use screws that fit your rack to attach both rack ears to the rack rails. Install Optional HA Components If you purchased a High-Availability (HA) package, install the following components: Redundant Power Supply. See the Power Supply Modules section on page 3-2. Redundant Fan Tray. See the Fan Tray Modules section on page

See the Management Interface Modules section on page Connecting Management Devices To connect the management ports, use either a serial cable and/or an Ethernet cable. (See Figure 2-3.) 9 Chapter 2 Connecting Management Devices Attaching a Serial Console Cable to a PC or Terminal Step 1 Step 2 Attach the RJ-45 console cables from the cable kit that is provided. See Figure 2-4. a. Connect the cables to the InfiniBand switch serial console port on the management interface module. If you have two management interface modules, make sure that you connect to the left management interface module (slot 15), which will be the primary management module upon initial boot-up. The serial console port is labeled b. Connect the other end of the serial cable to your terminal server or management workstation. For detailed information on how to connect the serial console cable, please see the documentation included with the serial cable kit. Open a terminal emulation window using a terminal emulation application (for example, HyperTerminal for Windows), set your terminal parameters to the following: Baud: 9600 bps Data Bits: 8 Parity: None Stop Bits: 1 Flow control: None Connecting an Ethernet Cable to the Ethernet Management Port Connect an Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port of the left management interface module (slot number 15). See Figure 2-4. If you have two management interface modules, you may also want to connect an Ethernet cable to the standby module (slot 16) to maintain Ethernet connectivity in the event of a failover. 2-9

10 Connecting Management Devices Chapter 2 Recommended Management Configuration Figure 2-4 shows the recommended management port connections. To have constant access to the switch remotely, connect the serial ports on the two management interface modules to a terminal server. 11 Chapter 2 Connecting Management Devices Powering On the Switch To power on the switch, perform these steps: Note Use only the power cable provided with your InfiniBand system. Step 1 Step 2 Remove the power cords from the shipping package. A 15-Amp/125 VAC or 10-Amp/250 VAC power cord is provided. If you have a high-availability unit, you will have a second power cord. Inspect the power cord and determine if it provides the proper plug and is appropriately certified for use with your electrical system. Discard the cord if it is inappropriate for your country s electrical system and obtain the proper cord, as required by your national electrical codes or ordinances. Grounding is supplied by the ground-prong on the 3-prong power plug. Do not attach a separate ground cable. Caution Step 3 Do not use adapter plugs. Do not remove the ground prong from the cable. Ensure the ground connection on the power supply is correct and functioning before applying power to the switch. Insert the power cords to the power jacks on the rear of the switch. If you only have a single power cord, insert it into the left receptacle. SeeFigure 2-5 for power jack locations. 2-11

12 Connecting Management Devices Chapter 2 Figure 2-5 Power Jack Locations Power input receptacles Step 4 Step 5 Plug the other end of each AC power cable into a 90 to 264 VAC power outlet operating at 47 to 63 Hz. Attach the switch only to approved power sources, as indicated by the electrical ratings label. If you are unsure of the correct power source to use, contact your support personnel or your local power company. The switch automatically starts and boots. You can watch the running status through the serial console. Use the correct external power source. Check the LEDs on the front of the Cisco SFS 7008 switch. When the system first powers up, it performs a power-on self test (POST). See the System-Wide Status LED section on page

13 Chapter 2 Configuring Basic Connectivity A login prompt indicates that the system has completed the boot process. Configuring Basic Connectivity This section describes how to configure an IP address for the Ethernet management port. It is necessary to configure connectivity to the out-of-box Ethernet management port in order to use Telnet, the Web GUI, or the Java GUI. The system is not preconfigured when it ships from the factory. IP addresses can be assigned statically (which is the default) or dynamically assigned using DHCP. These sections describe how to assign IP addresses: Assigning an Address Statically, page 2-13 Assigning an Address Dynamically, page 2-14 Assigning an Address Statically To assign an IP address statically, perform these steps: Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 Establish a serial connection to the switch and turn the power on. After the system has completed booting, enter your username and password. The default username is super, and the default password is super. Login: super Password: super SFS-7008P> Enter the enable command. SFS-7008P> enable SFS-7008P# Enter the configure command. SFS-7008P# configure SFS-7008P(config)# 2-13

SFS-7008P(config)# interface mgmt-ethernet Enter the IP address of the management port followed by the netmask. SFS-7008P(config-if-mgmt-ethernet)# ip address ip address netmask Set the default gateway for the management port. For example: SFS-7008P(config-if-mgmt-ethernet)# gateway gateway Enable the management port by entering the no shutdown command. SFS-7008P(config-if-mgmt-ethernet)# no shutdown Save the configuration to preserve it between reboots. SFS-7008P(config-if-mgmt-ethernet)# exit SFS-7008P(config)# exit SFS-7008P# copy running-config startup-config Assigning an Address Dynamically To assign an IP address statically, perform these steps: Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 Establish a serial connection to the switch and turn the power on. When the system completes booting, press Enter several times to display the CLI prompt. Login: Enter the username and password. The default username is super, and the default password is super. Login: super Password: super SFS-7008P> Enter the enable command. SFS-7008P> enable SFS-7008P# 2-14

SFS-7008P(config)# interface mgmt-ethernet Enter the option dhcp command. SFS-7008P(config-if-mgmt-ethernet)# option dhcp The chosen method will be persistent across module reboots. Enable the management port by entering the no shutdown command. SFS-7008P(config-if-mgmt-ethernet)# no shutdown Save the configuration to preserve it between reboots. SFS-7008P(config-if-mgmt-ethernet)# exit SFS-7008P(config)# exit SFS-7008P# copy running-config startup-config If you have two fabric controllers installed in the core slots, you will receive a message asking if you want to save the configuration to the standby controller. Answer Yes to save the configuration across both controllers. Connecting Network Devices This section describes how to connect the InfiniBand system to other network devices. InfiniBand devices can be connected to InfiniBand-enabled servers. The Cisco SFS 7008 switch supports the following connectors: Management ports: Serial console port: male RJ-45 connector. Ethernet management port: RJ-45 jack for unshielded twisted-pair connections. Switch module: 4x 10-Gbps InfiniBand connectors. 2-15

16 Connecting Network Devices Chapter 2 Connecting InfiniBand Devices Attaching the InfiniBand Cable to the InfiniBand Port To connect using InfiniBand to other workstations or switches, standard 4x InfiniBand cables are required. InfiniBand cables can be used to connect any two InfiniBand devices, whether switch or host. Step 1 Plug InfiniBand cables into the InfiniBand switch ports. a. To plug in an InfiniBand cable, push the connector into the interface until you hear/feel a click. Figure 2-6 InfiniBand Cable with Pinch Connector

If the InfiniBand cable is already connected to an InfiniBand host, the physical LED light will turn green on the switch InfiniBand port when connected properly. c. To remove a cable with a pinch connector, pinch both sides of the back of the connector and pull the connector away from the port. 2-17

18 Manage the System Chapter 2 Connecting to the Host Connecting to a Router or Switch The opposite end of the InfiniBand cable will most likely be connected to an InfiniBand-enable host. If your host does not provide an ample amount of free space around a given InfiniBand port, double-check that your InfiniBand cable connector engages fully. Wiggle your connector back and forth to be sure that both sides of the connector have locked firmly into place. To connect directly to an Ethernet switch/router or a fibre channel switch, you must add a device with the optional Ethernet or fibre channel gateway to your fabric. Connecting Multiple InfiniBand Switches Two InfiniBand systems (such as a Cisco SFS 7000P switch and a Cisco SFS 7008 switch) can be connected by an InfiniBand cable inter-switch link (ISL). Manage the System You can manage the InfiniBand server-switch system using the following methods: Command Line Interface (CLI) A text-based interface accessible through a direct serial connection, Telnet over IP, or SSH over IP. SFS Chassis Manager (GUI) A web-based graphical user interface. Element Manager (GUI) - An optionally available graphic interface installed on a workstation, and accessible over IP. (Optional) Launch the SFS Chassis Manager SFS Chassis Manager is a web-based GUI that can be used to manage a single InfiniBand switch. 2-18

19 Chapter 2 Manage the System Prepare Your Device To launch SFS Chassis Manager on your Cisco SFS 7008 switch, you must: Configure an IP address on the Ethernet management port, if you have not already done so. Configure an IP gateway on the Ethernet management port, if you have not already done so. Optional. Enable Telnet services (should be enabled by default). Optional. Enable HTTP or HTTPs services (HTTP should be enabled by default). Perform the following steps: Note Consult your network administrator for an IP address, subnet mask, and gateway address before you begin this process. Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 If you have not yet configured an IP address for the management port, refer to Configuring Basic Connectivity on page 13. Enter the telnet enable command in global config mode to start telnet services on your device. You may need to use the exit command to return to global config mode. SFS-7008P> enable SFS-7008P# configure SFS-7008P(config)# telnet enable Enter the ip http server command to enable HTTP services on your device. HTTPs is also supported. For example: SFS-7008P(config)# ip http server 2-19

20 Manage the System Chapter 2 Launch SFS Chassis Manager To launch SFS Chassis Manager, follow these steps: Step 1 Step 2 Launch your Web browser. SFS Chassis Manager supports the following browsers Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 Netscape Navigator version 6 Mozilla version 1.4 Type the management IP address of your Server Switch in the address field of your browser and press Enter. (You configured the IP address in Step 6) Figure 2-9 Web Browser Window A log-in window opens. Figure 2-10 displays the log-in window. Figure 2-10 SFS Chassis Manager Log-In Window Step 3 Enter your Server Switch username and password in the login window and click OK. SFS Chassis Manager loads in your browser window. (See Figures 2-11 and 2-12.) 2-20

You will need: 32 MB free RAM 50 MB disk space + 50MB additional temporary space during installation 300 Mhz processor 800x600 screen resolution, 16-bit color depth Download the software from the Cisco Software Download center:

Linux/install_linux_ia64.bin Linux/install_linux_x86.bin Windows/install.exe Solaris/install_solaris_sparc.bin Run the installation wizard: On Windows, double-click install.exe. On Solaris and Linux systems, enter sh./install_youros.bin. Follow the on-screen instructions. Enter location and preference information as requested by the installation program. Step 5 Start the Element Manager. The Open Device dialog box opens. (See.) Figure 2-13 Open Device Dialog Box Step 6 Enter the IP address or the device network name in the Open Device dialog box and the SNMP community name that provides full access (the default is set to private ). The chassis view will appear. (See Figure 2-14.) 2-23
