1 WNC1800/ZFR182x Pro Series Wireless Field Bus System Product Bulletin Code No. LIT Issued February 2017 The WNC1800/ZFR182x Pro (ZFR Pro) Series Wireless Field Bus System provides a wireless platform for all Metasys Field Equipment Controller (FEC) and select TEC3000 Thermostat Controllers (TEC) family controllers using BACnet protocol over the 2.4 GHz wireless ISM band. The pairing of a ZFR1821 or ZFR1822 Pro Router and any FEC family device, or a wireless TEC3000 model (with built-in router), are referred to as Wireless- Enabled Field Controllers (WEFCs). An FEC family device is an Advanced Application Field Equipment Controller (FAC), FEC, Input/Output Module (IOM), or VAV Modular Assembly 16 Series (VMA16) field controller. A ZFR Pro Series system consists of: Wireless Network Coordinators (WNC) Gateways ZFR1820 or ZFR1823 Pro Coordinator Radios TEC3000 Wireless Thermostat Controllers ZFR1821 or ZFR1822 Pro Router connected to FEC Family devices or acting as repeaters WRZ Series Wireless Room Sensors Note: Repeaters extend the wireless transmission distance of the BACnet data communications, fill in any gaps within the wireless mesh network, and provide alternate wireless data transmission pathways. Figure 1: WNC1800/ZFR182x Pro Series Components Together, these components create a wireless mesh network that allows the exchange of data between the collection of WNC Gateways, WEFCs, TEC3000s, and WRZs within the ZFR Pro Series system s wireless network and a network engine using standard BACnet IP communications. The wireless mesh network enhances reliability by providing redundant transmission paths for the data through other routers in the mesh network. The result is a resilient, self-healing network. Provide a wireless platform for Metasys BACnet devices across multiple levels of a Metasys Building Automation System (BAS), from supervisory engines to field controllers to room sensors; enable wireless devices to coexist with hard-wired devices on the same Metasys engine; offer simple add-on hardware to seamlessly enable standard Metasys BACnet field controllers to function wirelessly. Enables quick, economical, and low-maintenance installation; minimizes MS/TP BACnet hardwiring; and enhances reliability through automatically forming wireless links and redundant wireless data transmission paths. Provides a wireless alternative to hard-wired counterparts; facilitates easy initial location and relocation with minimal disruption to building occupants; and cost-effectively extends Metasys systems to applications where building aesthetics (such as solid walls or ceilings, temporary walls, or decorative surfaces) normally hinder hardwiring. The following table describes naming conventions used with the new system. Facilitates averaging and high/low selection to optimize comfort in larger zones. Where failure or malfunction of the sensor could lead to personal injury or property damage to the controlled equipment or other property, additional precautions must be designed into the control system. Incorporate and maintain other devices, such as supervisory or alarm systems or safety or limit controls, intended to warn of or protect against failure or malfunction of the ZFR Pro Wireless Field Bus System. The wireless Metasys products within a Metasys system are ideal for any location where it is cost-prohibitive, difficult, or aesthetically unappealing to hardwire between Metasys products. Examples of these locations include the following: hospitals, office buildings, university campuses, educational facilities, correctional facilities, and other commercial structures with brick or solid concrete walls and/or ceilings that impede hard-wired applications office buildings, retail stores, and other commercial real estate where tenant turnover is frequent and temporary walls and ceilings are common museums, historical buildings, atriums, and other sites where building aesthetics and historical preservation are important stadiums, arenas, gymnasiums, convention centers, airports, zoos, and other locations with large, open spaces buildings with marble, granite, glass, mirrored, wood veneer, or other decorative surfaces that present challenges to hardwiring buildings with asbestos or other hazardous materials that must not be disturbed 2

3 buildings with occupants sensitive to disruptions to business regions with high labor costs The ZFR Pro Series System is approved by national compliance agencies for use only in the United States and Canada. See Technical Specifications. Applications to Avoid IMPORTANT: A Network Engine reports an offline alarm within a certain period of time when an associated WEFC goes offline. For a hard-wired FAC, FEC, IOM, or VMA16 device, this time period is a nominal 20 seconds. For WEFCs within the ZFR Pro Wireless Field Bus System, this time period is 5 minutes. Locations or applications that prohibit cellular telephones or Wi-Fi systems are unsuitable for the wireless Metasys products. Examples include: operating rooms or radiation therapy rooms validated environments UL 864 applications Department of Defense applications requiring DIACAP certification (for example, military bases and military hospitals) Do not use the wireless Metasys products in applications that cannot tolerate intermittent interference, or where: critical control features would impact life-safety or result in large monetary loss, including secondary (backup) life-safety applications data centers, production lines, or critical areas would be shut down loss of critical control would result from loss of data from humidity or temperature sensor communications operation of exhaust fans or Air Handling Units (AHUs) would impair a purge or pressurization mode missing data would invalidate reporting required by the customer security points are monitored System Overview Figure 2 illustrates a simple ZFR Pro Wireless Field Bus System applied to BACnet field controllers on a Metasys network. These devices provide wireless monitoring and control of HVAC equipment within multiple levels of a Metasys BACnet system. Refer to the WNC1800/ZFR182x Pro Series Wireless Remote Field Bus System Technical Bulletin (LIT ) for information on commissioning and configuring a ZFR Pro Wireless Field Bus System for operation. The MS/TP trunk and device limits for supported NAE35/45/55 models are the same for hard-wired devices, wireless devices, or a combination of hardwired and wireless devices. For more information, refer to the WNC1800/ZFR182x Pro Series Wireless Field Bus System Technical Bulletin (LIT ). For information on device quantity limits in a ZFR Pro Wireless Field Bus System, see Table 3. Indiscriminate use of ZFR1821 Pro Routers as repeaters can lead to reduced performance. Network Automation Engine (NAE) NAEs are web-enabled, Ethernet-based controllers that monitor and supervise networks of field-level building automation devices that typically control HVAC equipment, lighting, security, fire, and building access. NAEs provide features, including alarm and event management, trending, archiving, energy management, scheduling, and password protection through the embedded Site Management Portal UI. Different models and options support various communications protocols including BACnet over IP, BACnet Master-Slave/Token-Passing (MS/TP), N2 Bus, N2 over Ethernet, and LONWORKS protocol. 3

4 WNC Gateway with ZFR1820 or ZFR1823 Pro Coordinator Radio A WNC Gateway is used in conjunction with a ZFR1820 or ZFR1823 Pro Coordinator radio. The pro coordinator radio provides a wireless interface between an NxE supervisory controller on a wired BACnet IP network and WEFCs. Each wireless mesh network requires one WNC Gateway, which initiates the formation of the network. Each NAE can support up to eight WNC Gateways. A WNC Gateway can operate from either of two power sources when using a supplied transformer: a 24 VAC, Class 2 power source a VAC outlet ZFR1821 and ZFR1822 Pro Routers A ZFR1821 or ZFR1822 Pro Router is used with any WEFC to provide a wireless interface between a field controller and: the NAE supervisory controller (by means of a WNC Gateway) its associated WRZ Series Sensors The ZFR1821 or ZFR1822 Pro Router can also be used as a repeater to extend the range of the data communications within the wireless mesh network, or to fill any gaps within the mesh network, based on the physical layout of the wireless devices, obstacles, and other characteristics of the installation site. A ZFR1821 or ZFR1822 Pro Router is powered directly from the connected field controller s 15 VDC output. When ordered as a repeater, a 24 VAC-15 VDC power supply is included as a repeater accessory to allow use as a stand-alone repeater. The ZFR1822 Pro Router is an alternate packaging design to the ZFR1821 Pro Router and is intended for flush wall-mount or ceiling-mount applications. The ZFR1822 Pro Router can be mounted in open areas of a building, which can improve communication distances between wireless devices. The ZFR1822 Pro Router includes mounting hardware and a 10-foot RJ- 12 cable for interfacing to wirelessly enabled field controllers. Repeater kits are used to extend wireless transmission distances or fill in gaps in a wireless mesh to increase wireless reliability. Each repeater kit includes everything you need to install one ZFR1821 or ZFR1822 Pro Router as a repeater in a ZFR Pro Wireless Field Bus System: ZFR1821 or ZFR1822 Pro Router 24 VAC to 15 VDC power supply for the ZFR1822 Pro Router RJ-12 cable for power extension Mounting hardware Notes: Use the ZFR1821 Pro Router for above ceiling mounting Use the ZFR1822 Pro Router for flush wallmount and below ceiling-mount applications Supported Field Controllers The ZFR Pro Wireless Field Bus System enables wireless BACnet connectivity between WEFCs, such as wireless TEC3000s, FACs, FECs, IOMs, or VMA16 controllers and Network Automation Engines, including NAE/35/45/55s. In addition, the wireless field bus system provides wireless communication between FEC/VMA16 controllers and WRZ Series wireless sensors. Notes: The ZFR1821 or ZFR1822 Pro Router is automatically updated during the main code download to the field controller. For information on uploading or downloading the devices to match, refer to the Loading Devices chapter of the CCT Help (LIT ). WEFCs can also use hard-wired NS Series network sensors. TEC3000 Series Wireless Thermostat Controllers The TEC3000 Series Thermostat Controllers are wireless, stand-alone devices that provide on/off, floating, and proportional control of the following: local hydronic reheat valves pressure-dependent VAV equipment with or without local reheat two- or four-pipe fan coils cabinet unit heaters other zoning equipment using an on/off, floating, or 0 to 10 VDC proportional control input The wireless TEC3000 models have an embedded ZFR radio that is updated during a firmware update. Models also provide single- or two-stage control of unitary rooftop units (RTUs) with or without economizers and heat pumps. 4

5 WRZ Series Sensors Depending on the sensor model, the WRZ Series Sensors transmit temperature, setpoint, humidity, occupancy status, and low battery conditions to an associated field controller by means of a ZFR1821 or ZFR1822 Pro Router. If the field controller is mapped to the engine, the data sent by the wireless sensor can be displayed. Some applications that support the temperature or humidity control functions do not support the occupancy/temperature setback function. Refer to a field controller s commissioning and operation literature to determine if the application supports occupancy or temperature setback functions. Notes: Configure the Analog Inputs (AIs) on all WRZ Sensors as SA Bus devices (the same as with hard-wired NS Series Sensors). The WRZ Series Sensors are designed for indoor, intra-building applications only. The WRZ Series Sensors require two 1.5 VDC AA alkaline batteries. The WRZ sensors minimize power consumption by transmitting data only once per minute, which yields an expected battery life of up to 5 years. ZFR Checkout Tool (ZCT) The ZFR Checkout Tool at version 6.3 or later, is an optional tool, included with the installation of the Controller Configuration Tool (CCT), or it can be downloaded as a stand-alone application. ZCT allows you to validate the wireless connectivity and health of wireless devices within a ZFR Pro Wireless Field Bus System, helping ensure a reliable mesh network is in place. You can use the information provided by the ZCT to analyze and troubleshoot the wireless mesh network created by a ZFR Pro Wireless Field Bus System. The ZCT gathers information by discovering the wireless field controllers and wireless sensors on your network and analyzing their status and wireless communication paths. The ZCT provides a simple report of wireless network performance, including online status verification and wireless signal strength information. The ZCT also provides wireless device lists, signal strength information, and diagnostic measurements of the wireless mesh network. Refer to the ZCT Help (LIT ) for more information on the ZCT. The ZCT requires a ZFR Wireless Universal Serial Bus (USB) Dongle adapter with ZFR driver as described below. Note: You must connect the adapter to the computer running CCT/ZCT before attempting to scan the network. ZFR Wireless USB Dongle The ZFR connection type within CCT requires the USB adapter with ZFR driver for your laptop computer. The ZFR Wireless USB Dongle allows a laptop computer to connect to a ZFR wireless field bus for the purpose of commissioning and downloading applications to wirelessly enabled field controllers using the CCT. It is also used for analyzing a ZFR wireless mesh using the ZCT. The ZFR Wireless USB Dongle requires a USB software driver that is installed automatically with CCT Version 5.3 or later. No user configuration is required. See Table 7 to order the ZFR USB adapter (product code ZFR-USBHA-0). This device is an IEEE ZFR to USB Adapter for the 2.4 GHz ISM Band. WRZ-SST-120 Wireless Sensing System Tool Use the optional, battery-operated WRZ-SST-120 Wireless Sensing System Tool with any model WRZ Series Sensor as a site survey tool to determine the wireless signal strength between potential locations of ZFR1800 system devices to survey your application and adjust ZFR1800 device locations before installing the devices. Refer to the WRZ-SST-120 Wireless Sensing System Tool Installation Instructions (Part No ) for more information on the tool. 5

6 Figure 2: ZFR Pro Wireless Field Bus System as Part of a Metasys Network WNC1800/ZFR182x Pro Series Wireless Field Bus System Wireless Communication The ZFR Pro Series System devices create a wireless mesh network using the ZigBee enhancement to the IEEE standard. The mesh network provides redundant wireless paths, enabling the BACnet data to traverse the network through alternate, automatically forming paths and arrive at the target destination device even if a ZFR1821 or ZFR1822 Pro Router or Repeater within the wireless mesh network experiences interference or drops out of the network. The ZFR Pro System radios use Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) Radio Frequency (RF) technology and operates on the globally accepted 2.4 GHz Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band. All ZFR Pro System radios use a transmission power of 10 mw and meet the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) standard for low power, low duty-cycle wireless transmitting systems. For more information on wireless transmissions, signal strength, and locating devices for optimum signal strength, refer to the WNC1800/ZFR182x Pro Series Wireless Remote Field Bus System Technical Bulletin (LIT ). Wireless Signal Transmission Range The effective transmission range/distance for indoor applications varies because of wireless signal absorption and reflection due to metal obstructions, walls (or floors), and furniture found in typical building interiors. Transmission ranges between ZFR182x Pro Series products can be less than the maximum distances shown in Table 4. In most commercial environments, the ZFR182x Series System does not encounter or generate wireless interference, even in environments with cell phones and competing Wi-Fi applications. 6

7 ZFR182x Series Wireless transmissions use different modulation schemes than Wi-Fi applications and use frequencies between popular Wi-Fi bands, enabling Wi-Fi and ZFR1800 Series Wireless networks to coexist in the same areas. For more information on wireless interference and security, refer to the WNC1800/ZFR182x Pro Series Wireless Remote Field Bus System Technical Bulletin (LIT ). Physical Features and Dimensions Figure 3 shows the WNC Gateway. Note that the overall dimensions depend on the mounting options used. The dimensions of the unit itself are: 120 x 70 x 24.5 mm (4-23/32 x 2-3/4 x 31/32 in. when used vertically). Refer to the WNC1800 Wireless Network Coordinator Gateway Installation Instructions (Part No ) for mounting dimensions. Figure 3: WNC Gateway Figure 4 shows the dimensions of the ZFR1820 Pro Coordinator radio and the ZFR1821 Pro Router. These two devices have the same form factor. 8 Figure 5 shows the dimensions of the ZFR1822 Pro Router and the ZFR1823 Pro Coordinator Radio. These models are intended for wall- or ceiling-mount applications. 9 Repair Information If a ZFR Pro Wireless Field Bus System component fails to operate within its specifications, replace the unit. For a replacement ZFR Pro Series System component, contact the nearest Johnson Controls representative.
