1 How to Configure Wireless Internet Access (Wi-Fi) Advanced Settings on the Qwest Standard Modem: Actiontec GT701-WG Internet Service Provider (ISP): All Use this document if: You need to configure the Advanced Wireless Settings for your Qwest Standard Modem: Actiontec GT701-WG. This document assumes: Your computer is connected to the modem using an Ethernet cable. Your Qwest Standard Modem: Actiontec GT701-WG is powered on. Your Qwest Standard Modem: Actiontec GT701-WG has the black and white screen depicted below. If you have the blue screen (depicted on the right), click here to see the directions for that firmware.

2 1. Open a web browser, type , and press enter. 2. Select Setup/Configuration. 3. Select Advanced Setup on the left column.

3 4. Select the Begin Advanced Setup button. 5. Select Wireless Settings from the left column.

4 6. This is the Wireless Settings page Next to the Wireless radio button, select ON. Enter your ESSID. The ESSID is your Wireless Network Name. The default ESSID is ACTIONTEC but can be customized and changed to meet the user s needs. Enter your Wireless Channel. This changes the frequency of the wireless signal to avoid interference from other wireless devices that use a similar frequency. Available channels are 1 through 11.

5 If you would like to use WEP security encryption, select the WEP radio button. Then, select Next Verify the Authentication Type dropdown is set to Open. Select the radio button next to Key 1. On the right side of the screen, you can select how large of a WEP security key you would like. Only use characters 0-9 and A-F. 64 bits = 10 characters 128 bits = 26 characters 256 bits = 58 characters Type in your security key in the field next to Key 1 and select Next.

6 If you would rather use WPA security encryption, select WPA. Then, select Next. The Group Key Interval is defaulted and recommended at Enter your desired Pre-Shared Key in the PSK String field using 8 to 63 ASCII characters. (note: ASCII includes 26 alphabetic characters, 10 numerical digits, and from 11 to 25 special graphic symbols. For more information on ASCII, use your favorite search engine.) After entering your Pre-Shared Key, select Next.

7 WEP+802.1x is mostly used in large enterprise networks and is not discussed in this document. 7. To allow or block specific MAC addresses from accessing your wireless network. Select Wireless MAC Authentication from the left column. (note: You must know the MAC address of the wireless device that is trying to connect to complete this step.)

8 Check the box labeled Enable Access List. Select the radio button Accept all clients or Deny all clients depending on your preference. Then, enter the MAC address of the device you want to allow or block in the Client MAC address field and select Add. When finished making MAC Authentication changes, select Next. 8. For other wireless advanced settings, select Wireless Advanced Settings from the left column.

9 Select the Disable or Enable radio button next to SSID Broadcast. When ESSID Broadcast is disabled, the network name will not show up when a user searches for available wireless networks. They will have to know the network name and configure the wireless settings on their computer manually. Select B only, 11G only, or Mixed (both b and g) from the dropdown. Then, select Next. 9. After making all the desired wireless setting changes, select Save and Restart on the bottom left corner of the screen.

10 Then, select the Save and Restart button. This will reboot the modem. After the modem has rebooted, your new wireless settings will be in effect.
