2 What is Software Defined Radio? SDR is generic Hardware platform consisting DSP which software runs to provide functions including modulation, filtering, coding, frequency selective, etc GPS, Cell Phone 2

4 SDR Architecture The digital radio system consists of three main functional blocks: RF section / IF section / BB section RF section is essentially analog hardware IF section is responsible for (ADC) (DDC) (DAC) (DUC). BB a section is responsible for equalization, Modulation, Coding, etc 4

6 Advantage and Disadvantage of SDR Advantages: Using the same Hardware Platform for different systems (standards + frequency bands + frequency bandwidths). Providing more easily interoperability (Global roaming). Downloading the air interface through the air for automatic reconfiguration Disadvantages: Higher power consumption. Increase complexity of software. Higher initial cost of equipment. 6

7 What is OpenBTS? OpenBTS is a Linux application(c++) that uses a software radio to implement the GSM stack and uses a SIP soft switch or PBX to connect calls. OpenBTS is distributed in two forms: 1. The public ("P") release. 2. The commercial ("C") release. 7

8 The Beginning of OpenBTS Initially began in 2006 when David shared and developed an idea with Harvind, the idea to simplify GSM. In 2007 the OpenBTS project began. In 2010 Range Networks,a startup equipment manufacturing company was founded to commercialize OpenBTS. 8

17 Mobility, Handover, and Roaming Mobility is the ability of a handset to receive service on different physical base stations in an operator s network. Handover is the ability of an active voice call to survive the transition between two base stations. Roaming is Mobility across carriers. 17

19 Open Registration OpenRegistration is an OpenBTS-specific feature where all MSs are accepted for registration, regardless of their authentication or provisioning status. This type of network is very useful in any ad hoc installation where the users are temporary and fluid or the network itself is only temporarily needed: emergency response, remote work areas, tourist destinations, large festivals, etc. 19
