2 Remote Viewing Setup: DLink Routers Setting up the DVMR: First, you will want to assign the DVMR an IP address so that it can be seen by the local computers and the router. You will need to access the Network Settings section of the menu to set the IP. To access the Network Settings, Press and Hold the Menu key on the DVMR. Once the menu comes up, keep tapping the menu button until the System Options menu screen appears. Use your arrow keys to enter the Network Settings section. Then enter the information as seen below. Use the following settings in the DVMR: TCP/IP Address: Subnet Mask: Default Gateway: ***Note that the above example assumes that no other devices on the LAN are using the address. If the above address is in use, change it to an unused address*** Setting up the Router: First, make sure your computer and the DVMR are plugged into the Router. You then need to open your D-link router setup page. Open Internet Explorer. In your address bar, type in the following: < >. Press enter or click Go. *When prompted for a Password, enter admin as the user and leave the password blank. This should take you to the main setup page. Click the WAN button on the left side of the home page. Then enter the Static IP, Subnet, and Gateway issued from the service provider. If you do not have a static IP from your provider you can select Dynamic IP address. Version 1.1 (11/18/04) 2

3 When setting up your DVMR for access from the internet, you will need to configure Port Forwarding on your Router. This can be accomplished in one of two ways, Specific Port Forwarding or the DMZ host. Use the DMZ option unless other network devices require forwarding as well. DMZ The DMZ host automatically forwards all incoming connection requests to a given IP address on your local network. To expose the DVMR to the internet, enter the DVMRs local IP address ( ) in the DMZ Host IP address box. The example below is common to most DLink 1) Click the advanced tab and chose the DMZ button on the left side of the page. 2) Enter the IP assigned to the DVMR ( or another available IP) 3) Click the Enable box. 4) Click Apply *See the Port forwarding section if you have other network devices that require access from the internet, otherwise skip to the Connecting to your DVMR section of this guide. 4 Port Forwarding In some cases you may just want to forward specific ports to your DVMR. If you are running any other device/server that hosts services available to the internet, you will want to use specific port forwarding instead of the DMZ Host. Follow the Steps below. 1) Locate the Advanced section in the Router, and then click the Virtual Server button. 2) Under Virtual Server click enable. 3) Enter the name, IP, ports, and protocol information from the fields below. 4) Schedule should be set to Always for all entries. 5) Click Apply after each entry. 6) The below entries should be shown in the Virtual Servers List as seen in the figure. 7) Now go to the next section to connect to the DVMR Private/Public Port Protocols Private IP Application Name 1)8234 and 8234 Both Network Viewer 2)8235 and 8235 Both Network Admin 3)80 and 80 TCP Web Viewer 4)21 and 21 Both FTP (system updates) Version 1.1 (11/18/04) 4

5 C onnecting to your DVMR Once the Port Forwarding or DMZ is enabled in the router, you can access the unit from the internet with the IP address issued by your service provider. 1) First, launch your Network Viewer Program. (Start> All Programs> Network Viewer> Network Viewer) 2) Enter the DVMR IP address in the box at the top right corner. 3) Press the connect button and log in with your username and password Default accounts Administrator: username=admin, password=admin User: username=user, password=password Notes: ** If the network viewer program is not already installed on your PC, you can download it for free from You can also download the Network Viewer program from your DVMR by entering the DVMRs IP address into the address bar of internet explorer. Once the DVMRs webpage loads, locate the link to download the application. ** When selecting a high-speed internet line (DSL/Cable) to host your DVR, it is important to check the upload speed. On the receiving end it is the download speed rather than the upload speed which is important. Many ADSL/Cable providers offer fast download speeds of 1Mb/s or 2Mb/s; however, upload speed tends to remain the same (usually 256Kb/s). The faster the upload speed the better the update rate will be. If your service provider does not offer static IP addresses it is possible to use a dynamic address in conjunction with a DDNS service (i.e. or Version 1.1 (11/18/04) 5
