The Evolution o R-PHY From Gen R-PHY to Gen FDX SCTE Cable-Tec Expo: R-PHY Technical Session David Eckard, CTO, Fixed Networks October 17, Nokia 2017
What is next or DAA and R-PHY? R-PHY node trends result rom two distinct areas o innovation Virtualization Physical Node Work lows DAA vccap SDN DPoE NFV Service Chaining Virtualization vcmts EPON Virtual Network Functions Work Flows Service Chaining FDX Silicon Advances Flexibility Let s look at one innovation coming rom each o these areas. 2 Nokia 2017
Virtualization : Key Component o Node Evolution vcmts on the R-PHY node Work lows automate deployment and coniguration. Additional unctionality easily added by adding new VNFs Operators demand vendor choice vcmts/service density challenges create conversation around moving unctions rom headend to node (e.g., BPI+) CCAP vcmts Remote-PHY RPD Service group Scale or power, size, space in the node and the cloud VNF-based vcmts can be ANYWHERE, even on the R-PHY node itsel Reduce the bandwidth requirements or aggregation (e.g. PON and cascaded Ethernet) Remote-PHY+ Onboard vcmts vcmts RPD Service group 3 Nokia 2017
R-PHY Device in a Virtualized World In the Node In the OSP In the Hub In the Headend In the Data Center OSP Hub Headend Data Center Controller Routing Switching OSP Hub Headend Data Center Controller Routing Switching OSP Hub Headend Data Center Controller Routing Switching OSP Hub Headend Data Center Controller Routing Switching OSP Hub Headend Data Center Controller Routing Switching RPD RPD RPD RPD RPD 4 Nokia 2017
What is next or DAA and R-PHY? R-PHY node trends result rom two distinct areas o innovation Virtualization Physical Node Work lows DAA vccap SDN DPoE NFV Service Chaining Virtualization vcmts EPON Virtual Network Functions Work Flows Service Chaining FDX Silicon Advances Flexibility 5 Nokia 2017
The Next Generation Node Coax plant spectrum options FDX Band MT: MHz SHOULD: MHz Expected MAC data rates or FDX: 4-5 Gb/s, 9-10 Gb/s Management o transmission groups adds complexity 6 Nokia 2017
The Next Generation Node What is FDX? Full Duplex (FDX) in cable means Full Duplex over an N+0 cable plant (P2MP) Full Duplex D3.1 uses ull duplex at the node and FDD at the FDX CM Each FDX CM uses FDX sub-bands in either or (never both simultaneously) Additional power needed at node or FDX Process requires extensive communication between the PHY and upper layers o DOCSIS stack 7 Nokia 2017
The Next Generation Node - Full Duplex (FDX) Combining ull duplex with requency division duplexing, how does that work? The network node aggregates and signals rom all modems, and operates in real Full Duplexing mode INTF<< FDX Node Modem 1 Modem 2 Low intererence: CMs can have dierent FDD coniguration Each individual modem always operates in Frequency Division Duplexing mode 8 Nokia 2017
The Next Generation Node - Full Duplex (FDX) FDX CM Intererence Management The network node aggregates and signals rom all modems, and operates in real Full Duplexing mode Node High intererence: CMs must use same FDD coniguration INTF>> Modem 1 Modem 2 Modem 3 9 Nokia 2017 Each individual modem always operates in Frequency Division Duplexing mode
The Next Generation Node - Full Duplex (FDX) Intererence Groups Cable modems that heavily interere are clustered in intererence groups All modems within one intererence group have identical and requency bands This avoids any -to- ull duplex intererence or modems within the same intererence group Additional local unctionality is needed in the scheduling process to take into account these intererence groups. INTF<< Node INTF>> Intererence group 1 Intererence group 2 10 Nokia 2017
FDX Design Considerations Headend OSP CPE CCAP-core unctionality Switch Hardware upgrade (interace cards at a minimum) required or traditional CCAP. Sotware upgrade required or CCAP-core and vcmts Fiber 10 GE FDX R-PHY Node Requires N + 0 architecture Coax Requires new node (new RF and electronics at a minimum) FDX-Ready Nodes will likely be deployed ahead o FDX CPE Node must support FDX, all versions o DOCSIS, and QAM video Service group FDX CPE will likely ollow FDX nodes by months Network will have to support existing CPE 11 Nokia 2017
Virtualized Uniied Architecture or Cable Access Common controller Common routing and switching Any service, any medium CCAP-core or vcmts Access node vcmts R-PHY All-IP iber Access node R-PHY+Onboard vcmts FDX vcmts* Access Controller Edge Router Access node FDX Access node With virtualization, MSOs can deploy the right technology or any situation. PON 12 Nokia 2017
The R-PHY DAA journey has only just begun. DAA extends useul lie o HFC ar beyond what was originally anticipated. Virtualization eliminates diicult decisions and provides incredible lexibility. Move complexity where is makes economical and operational sense. Silicon advancements will greatly improve density and eiciency. FDX opens dramatic capacity in the access network or new use cases. A lot o exciting developments happening now. A lot more to come. 13 Nokia 2017
