2 Back to Top Requirements To perform the steps described in this document, you need to have these items: A straight-through Ethernet cable to connect your PC to the switch A Catalyst Express 500 switch with Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(25)FY or later, that is installed and powered on Note: If you have not installed the switch, refer to the Hardware Setup Procedure for the Catalyst Express 500 Switch. A PC with CNA installed on it Note: This document is based on CNA 4.0. If the CNA is not installed in your PC, or if you need to upgrade your software, refer to Download and Install Cisco Network Assistant. You must configure the PC with the IP address via Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP). For more information on how to configure DHCP for your PC refer to Configure an IP Address on Your PC. 3 Connect your PC to the Switch Follow these steps to configure the basic settings on your switch: Note: The SYSTEM LED turns solid green, and the SETUP LED blinks green for several minutes when the switch completes the power-up procedure.you can perform these steps even if the SETUP LED stops blinking.verify that no other devices are connected to the switch. 1. Press the SETUP button until the LED for one of the switch ports begins to blink green, and release the button. 2. Connect one end of a straight-through Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on your PC. 3. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the switch port with the LED that blinks. 4. Launch the CNA on your PC when the SETUP LED turns solid green. 4 Follow these steps to log in to the switch with CNA: 1. To launch CNA, go to Start > Programs > Cisco Network Assistant > Cisco Network Assistant. 2. Type in the Connect To field. Click Connect. Note: If you are unable to connect to the switch with CNA, see Troubleshoot the Procedure for help. Create a VLAN CNA operates in two modes namely: Expert View Guide View The default view for CNA 3.0 is Expert View. To ensure that you are in Expert View, click the Expert button on the far right of the toolbar. Follow these steps to create a VLAN on the switch: 1. 6 3. On the Create VLAN window, type the VLAN information for the new VLAN. Type 20 in the VLAN ID field. Type Default in the VLAN Name field. (6 of 34)12/6/2007 6:56:37 PM

8 Click Apply, and click OK. Configure the Host Name The host name identifies the switch. Follow these steps to configure or change the host name on the switch: 1. On the Features tab, click Configure > Device Properties > Hostname. (8 of 34)12/6/2007 6:56:37 PM

9 2. Type rootswitch in the New Hostname field, if you want to use this switch as the root switch. Click OK. Configure Passwords Follow these steps to create or change the passwords on the switch: (9 of 34)12/6/2007 6:56:37 PM

11 3. Type the administrative user name and password information in the Create Local Username/ Password window. Follow these steps: Type admin in the Username field. Type the password and re-enter the password again to confirm. Use the admin password that you entered in field S5 of the Switch Port Assignments Worksheet. Select 15 from the Privilege Level list. 13 Click Apply. Note: CNA prompts you to log in again after you create the system passswords. 4. If the Network Authentication window appears, log in to CNA with the admin username and password that you entered in field S5 of the Switch Port Assignments Worksheet. Click OK. Note: The CNA does not prompt you to login until you perform another action. 5. Click OK in the Users and Passwords window. Set the System Time Follow these steps to configure the clock time zone and the Network Time Protocol (NTP) server: 1. On the Features tab, click Configure > Device Properties > System Time. 15 3. In the Modify System Time window, enter the system time information. Use the Time Zone drop-down list to select the correct time zone for your location. Use the system time that you entered in field B13 in the Internet Worksheet. In the Auto Daylight Saving Adjustment drop-down list, select enable. 16 4. Click OK. 5. In the System Time window, click NTP. 6. In the Network Time Server window, next to IP Address: field, enter the IP address of the router that you entered in field L6A of the LAN Addressing Worksheet, and click OK. (16 of 34)12/6/2007 6:56:37 PM

17 7. Click OK in the Info: Network Time Server window. 8. Click Apply and click OK in the System Time window. Configure Port Settings Follow these steps to configure Description, Duplex/Speed and Port Fast settings on your switch ports: 1. On the Features tab, click Configure > Ports > Port Settings. 18 2. Follow these steps to configure a descriptive name for the ports or interfaces of the switch: Click on the Configuration Settings tab. Click the Description field for Fa0/1 and enter the brief text description of the port. For example the first port of the switch Fa0/1 is connected to Router port hence, enter the text description for that port as Connected to Router. Click Apply. 3. To enable or disable a switch port, click Status field for the respective port and select enable or disable from the drop-down list. For example to enable port Fa0/2 which is in administratively shut down mode, click on Status for Fa0/2 and select enable from drop-down list. (18 of 34)12/6/2007 6:56:37 PM

19 Click Apply. 4. To configure Duplex/Speed setting for the port, click on Duplex or Speed field for the respective port and select the appropriate value form the drop-down list. For example, to configure a switch port duplex/speed settings for Fa 0/4 port connected to a 10 Mbps Hub, click the Speed field and select 10. Click on Duplex field for the same port and select half. 20 Click Apply. 5. To enable Port Fast on a port, click Port Fast field for the respective port and select enable from the drop-down list. To disable Port Fast, select disable from the drop-down list. You can choose to enable it for only static-access ports or for both static-access ports and trunk ports. (20 of 34)12/6/2007 6:56:37 PM

21 Click Apply and click OK. Note: Use the table to see information on various Switch Port settings that can be configured on your switch. Port Settings Explanation Text description of the port. Click Describe in the Port Settings window to describe multiple ports. Description You cannot use the? and / characters. If you select more than one port, this field is not available. 22 Setting to enable or disable the port, which can be different from the runtime setting. For example, if no device is connected to a port, it can be administratively enabled with a runtime status of DOWN. Status If you change other settings on a disabled port, they do not take effect until you enable the port. When you disable a port, a linkdown trap is sent to the management station if you configure an SNMP manager. Follow these steps to set for duplex: full duplex, half duplex, or auto The default setting for Gigabit Ethernet and GigaStack GBIC ports is auto. These ports automatically match the duplex capability of an attached device. Duplex To set a duplex value other than auto, the speed value must be other than auto. The duplex value must be auto if the port speed is set to auto and if the port can run at a speed of 1000 Mbps. GigaStack GBIC stack connections operate in half-duplex mode. Point-to-point GigaStack GBIC port connections operate in full-duplex mode. Settings for the 10/100-Mbps and 10/100/1000-Mbps ports: 10 (Ports run at a forced speed of 10 Mbps.) 100 (Ports run at a forced speed of 100 Mbps.) 1000 (Ports run at a forced speed of 1000 Mbps.) Speed auto (Ports autonegotiate and advertise all available speeds.) The default setting for 10/100- and 10/100/1000-Mbps ports is auto. Ethernet ports can automatically match the transmission speed of an attached device. The default setting for 10/100- and 10/100/1000-Mbps ports is auto. Port Fast Immediately brings a port from the blocking state into the forwarding state by eliminating the forwarding delay (the amount of time a port waits before changing from its STP learning and listening states to the forwarding state). Configure Initial Port Assignments Follow these steps to configure switch ports with Smartports: Note: Smartports is a feature that helps you to apply consistent configurations to ports based on roles that you assign to each port. CNA then applies appropriate port settings for the connection type. 1. On the Features tab, click Configure > Smartports. A window displays with a graphic illustration of the switch. 2. 24 Click Modify. 3. In the Modify Port Roles window, configure the port role and attributes. Select Desktop from the Role list. Select Default (20) from the Access VLAN list. (24 of 34)12/6/2007 6:56:37 PM

25 Click OK. The port is assigned with the desktop macro, which appears on the switch illustration. 4. Configure ports 2 through 9 with these assignments: For port 2 (for use by a router), set the port role to Router and Native VLAN to Default (20). Note: If you receive a warning message that you are about to change a port role, click Yes to continue. Port 3 is reserved for future use. For port 4 (for use by PIX internal), set the port role to Desktop and Access VLAN to Default (20). For port 5 (for use by a wireless access point) and ports 6 through 9 (for use by switches), set the port role to switch and Native VLAN to Default (20). To configure these ports at one time, press Ctrl on your keyboard while you click each port in the CNA window. (25 of 34)12/6/2007 6:56:37 PM

26 Click OK. Note: If you receive a warning message that modified ports will be set to factory default, click Yes to continue. Configure the IP Address Configure VLAN 20 with the IP address that you entered in field L8 of the LAN Addressing Worksheet. Follow these steps to configure the IP Address: 1. On the Features tab, click Configure > Device Properties > IP Addresses. 2. In the IP Addresses window, on the Interface Configuration tab, type the IP address information. Select the Vlan ID configured earlier (Vlan20) from the Vlan list. Select the IP Address field for Vlan20, and type the IP address of the root switch that you entered in field L8 of the LAN Addressing Worksheet. (26 of 34)12/6/2007 6:56:37 PM

27 Select from the Subnet Mask list. Note: Do not click OK or Apply button. 3. On the Device Configuration tab, type the default gateway information for the switch. Type the IP address for the router that you entered in field L6A of the LAN Addressing Worksheet in the Default Gateway field. Type the domain name for the device that you entered in field B48 of Internet Worksheet in the Domain Name field. Uncheck the Enable Domain Lookup check box. (27 of 34)12/6/2007 6:56:37 PM

28 Click Apply. 4. Click OK on the Info: IP Addresses window. This causes the switch to disconnect from your PC. 5. Close the CNA application. (28 of 34)12/6/2007 6:56:37 PM

29 Reconnect to the Switch Follow these steps to reconnect to the switch on a different port: 1. Unplug the Ethernet cable from the connected switch port, and insert the cable into port Change the TCP/IP setting on your PC to match the switch (foight-clickr example, ). Right-click on the network connection icon in your system tray and open the network connections window. R on the Local Area Connection icon and choose Properties. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click Properties, and type the new IP address. Note: Restart your computer if required after you change the IP address. 3. Launch CNA. When the Connect window appears, type the IP address of the switch that you entered in field L8 of the LAN Addressing Worksheet (for example, ). Click Connect. 4. When the Network Authentication window appears, log into the switch with the admin user ID and password. Configure the Remaining Ports Follow these steps to configure the remaining ports on the switch: 1. On the Features tab, click Configure > Smartports. 30 2. Drag the switch slider over ports 11 through 24 (or 48) to highlight the ports with a yellow outline, and click Modify. 3. In the Modify Port Roles window, configure the port type and attributes. Set the macro type to Desktop from the Role list. Set the Access VLAN field to Default (20) from the Access VLAN list. Click OK. 4. Click OK in the Smartports Setup window. The remaining ports are now configured. Save Your Configuration Follow these steps to save your configuration: 1. On the Features tab, click Configure > Save Configuration. 2. In the Save Configuration window, select rootswitch from the Hostname list. (30 of 34)12/6/2007 6:56:37 PM

31 Click Save and close the CNA application. 3. Remove the Ethernet cable from the ports on the PC and the switch, to disconnect your PC from the switch. Restore the TCP/IP settings on your PC to the original values. Refer to Configure an IP Address on Your PC for more instructions. Connect the Switch to Your Network Identify the cables that you need, to connect the switch to your network. If you are not sure on how to identify the type of Ethernet cables, refer to Cable Descriptions. Use a straight-through Ethernet cable to connect your switch to a server, workstation, or router. Use a crossover Ethernet cable to connect your switch to another switch. Connect devices to the switch according to the Switch Port Assignments Worksheet. 32 Port 5 Access Point Ports 6 through 9 Additional switches Ports 10 through 24 or 48 Additional devices Follow these steps to connect devices to your switch: 1. Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to a port on your switch. 2. Insert the other end of the Ethernet cable into a port on the target device (server, workstation, router, switch, etc.). 3. Wait for approximately 30 seconds, and verify whether the port status LED on the switch turns green. If the LED is off and does not turn green, see Troubleshoot the Procedure for help. 33 your problem, contact the SMB Technical Assistance Center (SMB TAC) for assistance. Problem Cause(s) and Suggested Solution(s) Ensure that the power-on self test (POST) is completed successfully. The SYST and STAT LEDs must be green. You connected a PC directly to the switch, but you are unable to establish a connection with CNA. After you connect the switch to the PC, you must wait for 30 seconds before you try to re-connect. Verify that the IP Address on your PC is Make sure that you type the correct IP address for the switch in the Connect window. Retype , and then click Connect. Ensure that you use the correct cable. You must use a straight-through cable, not a crossover cable. Refer to Cable Descriptions for more information. Ensure that you type the correct IP address in the Connect window. Retype the IP address that you assigned to the switch, and click Connect. You connected the switch to your network, but you are unable to establish a remote connection with CNA. Ensure that you use the correct cable. Use a straightthrough Ethernet cable, to connect your switch to a server, workstation, or router. Use a crossover Ethernet cable, to connect your switch to a repeater or another switch. Refer to Cable Descriptions for more information. 34 Ensure that the target device is powered on. You connected the switch to another device on your network, but the port status LED is off. Ensure that you use the correct cable to connect to the target device. Refer to Cable Descriptions for more information. Ensure that the port adapter on the target device operates properly.
