9 1 Virtual Machine setup This chapter explains items which need review in advance and needs caution. Read this chapter before using VMware vsphere. Environment Prerequisite Preparation Virtual machine creation Virtual Machine set up 1-1

10 Environmental prerequisite This section describes the virtual environment in which Hitachi WAN Optimizer is installed. Prerequisite This guide assumes that a virtual machine (remote machine) where Hitachi WAN Optimizer is installed is operated by a console (local machine) that manages the virtual environment via a network. The target for installing Hitachi WAN Optimizer is the remote machine. The guide also assumes the following conditions: - VMware vsphere Client (VMware Client 6.0) is already installed on a local machine. - VMware ESXi 6.0 Server (VMware ESXi) is already installed on a remote machine. * Hardware requirement VMware vsphere ESXi ( 6.0), which is a virtualization plaform, requires supported hardware. For details, see the VMware Compatibility Guide: Virtual network connection When connecting a virtual machine where Hitachi WAN Optimizer is installed to a virtual network in a VMware ESXi, you need to create LAN side and WAN side virtual switches and connect to the virtual machine via these virtual switches. See Virtual network connection for details. Virtual machine start-up/shutdown By powering on/off VMware ESXi, you can start up or shut down a virtual machine where Hitachi WAN Optimizer is installed. See Virtual machine start-up/ shutdown for details. VMware function support You can operate a virtual machine where Hitachi WAN Optimizer is installed by using VMware ESXi functions. 1-2 Virtual Machine set up

11 Preparation Prepare a setup disk for Red Hat Enterprise Linux which are OS prerequisites for Hitachi WAN Optimizer. Preparing OS image file This section describes how to transfer a Red Hat Enterprise Linux image file to a storage system by using the datastore browser. The image is used to create a virtual machine. This guide uses datastore1 as the storage system. 1. At the vsphere Client display, choose VMware ESXi server and open [Configuration] tab. Choose [Storage] in the [Hardware] column and rightclick object storage (datastore1), then choose [Browse Datastore ] Fig. 1-1 Refer to datastore 2. When the datastore browser appears, click the [Upload files to this datastore] button from the upper menu and choose the image file to upload. Virtual Machine set up 1-3

16 Guest OS 1. For a guest OS, choose [Linux] and [Red Hat Enterprise Linux (64-bit)] and click [Next]. Fig. 1-7 Guest OS CPU 1. Allocate the number of virtual sockets and CPU cores based on your operational environment, then click [Next]. See the Hitachi WAN Optimizer User Guide for details of CPU allocation. Note: Transfer performance of the WAN acceleration application is affected by processing performance of the host and usage status of other virtual machines. To minimize these effects, configure CPU resources of the virtual machine, such as number of virtual CPU cores and CPU affinity. Memory 1. Allocate memory based on your operational environment, then click [Next]. See the Hitachi WAN Optimizer User Guide for details of memory allocation. Fig. 1-9 Memory Network 1. Choose a NIC.

Choose a NIC. Separate NICs are required for management, LAN side connection, and WAN side connection. You must choose virtual switches that correspond to each NIC correctly, but you can change this configuration after configuring the virtual switches. Setup for all NICs is processed under a VM network environment. See Virtual network connection before turning on a virtual machine, and configure a virtual switch suited to your environment. Note: Choose VMXNET3 as adapters for LAN side connection and WAN side connection Virtual Machine set up

The names in italic font are example names used in this section. Choose appropriate names for your environment. This section shows an example procedure for port VLAN configuration of a standard VMware virtual switch to allow only VLAN-A packets to pass through a virtual machine where Hitachi WAN Optimizer is installed. VLAN-A is set to VLAN-ID (101) and MTU is set to Virtual network connection

27 LAN-side virtual switch creation Create a LAN side virtual switch [vswitch1] and configure promiscuous mode and MTU. Virtual switch creation In the vsphere Client screen, choose VMware ESXi server and go to the [Configuration] tab. Then, choose [Networking] in the [Hardware] column and click [Add Networking...]. 28 Choose [Create a vsphere standard switch] and click [Next]. You do not need to choose [vmnic] at this point.
