8 Topology Elements R1 Routers Located at the Edge of IP Networks Responsible for handling the user facing IP traffic R2 Routers Located at Central Sites of a service provider Provide the interface to Data Centers R2s are built in a fully meshed form Data Centers exist in every R2, thus creating a cloud of Services Links Speed 10 GbE connections between layer 2 elements and the R1 100 GbE between R1 and R2
9 IPv4/IPv6 Aspects 1 IPv6 used for new Services Use some of the IPv6 address bits to indicate the type of traffic Routing and classification decisions for network traffic would be made based on the specific bits of IPv6 address Examples One bit indicates that the packet is containing a L3 VPN packet 3 bits are used to indicate the type of Services
10 IPv4/IPv6 Aspects 2 IPv4 decommissioning Dual Stack-lite (DS-lite) The private IPv4 packets are encapsulated in IPv6 and sent to NAT44 located at a Data Center. The NAT44 translates the IPv4 address to a public IPv4 address. NAT 4 to 6 CPE performs IPv4 to IPv6 translation. Reaching an IPv4 site a second NAT64 translation is required. Dual Stack Approach is not considered as a valid alternative.
11 Scenario Customer Connection Example
12 Scenario Customer Connection Example 1. A Customer connects his device, generates IPv6 packets and forwards them to R1. 2. R1 receives the packet, and recognizes that the VLAN +MAC address are not in Service. 3. R1 encapsulates the packet and forwards it to the Data Center. 4. Data Center responds with the Web Server. Customer can only reach the web-page on the web-server. 5. Web-Server generates a request to the Network Manager in order to configure a new customer at R1. 6. R1 recognizes the packet of the customer as in-service and the customer can now have access to more Internet-pages.

14 Present View Cisco and Deutsche Telekom have been working together since 2011 to develop and validate the novel and open TeraStream architecture* to significantly reduce network and system complexity and improve operational efficiency. (*Operated by DT s subsidiary Hrvatski Telekom (T-HT), it is initially providing broadband services to residential users in the Zagreb area of Croatia). Eventually, TeraStream transforms the way telecommunications networks are built and operated and the way services are delivered, providing optimization and better monetization of carriers network assets. TeraStream also supports integrated cloud service centers that enable virtualized network services and applications for rapid service innovation, elastic service creation, plus programmatic interfaces enabled by the Cisco Open Network Environment, embracing software-defined networking (SDN) technologies for real-time automation
