Basics Basics Overview Introduction Cisco Prime Infrastructure provides performance and fault monitoring tools that summarize the network activity and resource usage. Recognizing these tools will help you access the data that you need more efficiently and effectively. Tool types include: Dashboards Which summarize data in concise, organized layouts to provide you with a comprehensive overview of the information that the system is reporting based on various categories views Device- and interface-specific pop-up windows that contain significant amounts of - information, including listing alarms and providing information about neighboring devices Network topology maps Which provide a graphical representation that you can use to monitor and interact with network or data center devices, and are most often organized by locations, regions, or device types. This job aid introduces you to Prime Infrastructure monitoring tools that report summary or highlevel information and provide efficient navigation to detailed data to support your monitoring tasks. Skills Network Operator To perform network monitoring tasks, you need the following experience. Proficient Prime Infrastructure user interface navigation and behaviors Networking knowledge Practical networking experience Expert Data center networking knowledge 1

Basics Terms Link Aggregation Group (LAG) The physical ports that are combined to establish the virtual port channel (vpc) Virtual Port Channel (vpc) Physically connected links between two Nexus switches configured to appear as a single Layer 2 virtual port channel (vpc) to a third downstream device Virtual Port Channel (vpc) Domain The system formed when vpcs are configured, which comprises a series of components that support the vpc Virtual Device Context (VDC) Logical Switches The technology that virtualizes a single physical switch device into multiple logical switches, each of which can be configured and managed as a separate device 2

Monitoring Summary Wired Network Data Network Summary Dashboards Overview Dashboards present summary and aggregate data in concise, organized layouts to provide you with a comprehensive overview of the information that the system is reporting based on various categories. Note: While some dashboards combine reporting on both wired and wireless areas of the network, this job aid focuses on wired network monitoring. This job aid addresses key dashlets for monitoring the wired network. Dashboards can include multiple tabs and dashlets. 3

Dashlets are separate data elements that organize and report categories of information, such as alarm summaries, network statuses, and network and system performance metrics, among other information. Dashlets can present information in charts and tables. Note: In this job aid, we are presenting dashlets as they appear by default in the Prime Infrastructure. You can add or remove dashlets on existing tabs or configure custom tabs and add the dashlets that support your specific monitoring tasks. You can add the same dashlet to more than one tab. 4

Managing Data Reporting Time Periods You control dashlet time reporting time periods at a dashlet or dashboard level, depending on the dashlet. Recognizing the time period controls help ensure that you are seeing the data that you need to support your work. Many dashlets provide dashlet level controls, including the zoom and calendar picker tools. Some dashlet data reporting time periods are controlled at a dashboard level. The screenshot below illustrates the Coverage Area dashlet, which reports data based on the Time Frame setting. 5

Managing Dashlet Settings and Defining Top N Reporting At a dashlet level, you have several settings available. These settings vary depending on the dashlet. Some dashlets allow you to select specific items to monitor, such as specific device, interface, or port groups; or device types for example. Note: Changes that you make to dashlet settings affect your preferences only, and not those of other system users. This way, you can monitor and control data reporting based on your monitoring requirements. Using the Top N Interface Utilization dashlet as an example, you can see the types of settings that you can configure. To see the current settings that are applied to the dashlet: On the dashlet toolbar, point to Edit. The Filter(s) pop-up window opens, listing the dashlet settings. For dashlets that report top number (Top N) metrics, you can define the number of items, up to 15, that the dashlet reports. 6

To configure dashlet settings: On the dashlet toolbar, click Edit. The dashlet expands to display the settings that you can change. In this example, you can: Change the dashlet name. Tip: The naming feature is particularly helpful when you add custom dashlets to a dashboard, providing easier recognition of the data that the dashlet is reporting. Apply the optimal data refresh interval. Note: When setting the data refresh rate, keep in mind that the system reports data based on polling intervals. Setting the refresh rate at a shorter time interval than the polling interval causes unnecessary updates. Configure the number interfaces, up to 15 in each table, on which to report. 7

Indicate the metric or metrics (current, average, or maximum usage) that the dashlet reports for the interfaces. The port group that contains the interfaces of interest. Adding Dashboards and Dashlets for Flexible Monitoring When working with dashlets that provide access to groups, families, or types of items, for example, keep in mind that you can add custom dashlets that report the specific groups of items for which you are responsible. You also can add custom dashboard tabs. Adding custom dashboard with the system or custom dashlets of interest creates a highly flexible monitoring environment. This way, you can ensure that you are seeing the metrics that you need so that you can respond to changing conditions most efficiently. 8

Network Summary and Aggregate Dashlets The following network summary and aggregate dashlets, available on the Network Summary Overview, Incidents, and Site Summary tabs, report key wired data. Tip: You also can monitor and manage wired router and switch health on the Network Health dashboard. For more information, refer the Network Health Monitoring Overview job aid. Device-Related Summary Dashlets The Top N CPU Utilization dashlet lists the device CPUs experiencing the highest usage rates. To review a graph illustrating usage for the time period indicated in the dashlet: For the device of interest, beside the Maximum Utilization indicator, click the information button. A pop-up window opens and displays the graph. 9

The Top N Memory Utilization dashlet reports the devices experiencing the highest memory usage rates. 10

To review graphs of CPU or memory usage over time for the devices listed in the dashlet: Beside the dashlet title, click View Details. The system navigates to and generates a tab of associated metrics graphs in the Performance Graphs area of the application. Tip: In this view, you also can display alarms and configuration changes in relationship to the KPI values for the device on which the graph is reporting. Correlating changing KPI values to alarm reporting or configuration changes can provide critical insight into possible issues or issue causes. For more information on using performance graphs, refer to the Network Health Monitoring Overview job aid. 11

The Top N Environmental Temperature dashlet lists devices reporting the highest environmental temperatures. To see the current, minimum, maximum, and average temperatures that a device is experiencing: Beside the device s Max. Temp.(F) value, point to the information button. The Temperature pop-up window opens, listing the related values. 12

Interfaces Experiencing the Most Usage The Top N Interface Utilization dashlet lists the interfaces receiving or transmitting the most data. 13

The data that you see in the dashlet depends on: The monitoring policy definitions and reporting thresholds. The port groups that system users have configured. The settings that you apply to the dashlet. How Monitoring Policies and Port Groups Affect Interface Reporting Prime Infrastructure enables standard monitoring policies automatically on installation. The automated policies report on these interfaces system-wide. System users can configure additional monitoring policies based on operational requirements. Recognizing that monitoring policies control the data that the dashlet is reporting, including the warning and critical utilization threshold breach indicators, is important for effective interface usage monitoring. 14

The system also provides port groups, which logically organize interfaces into groups by type or configuration among others. System user also can configure port groups. You can select a specific port group to report in the Top N Interface Utilization dashlet. Note: The system provides pre-defined port groups. System users also can add custom port groups, which supports organizing interfaces logically based on the organization of the enterprise and on business requirements. Important Note: If users add custom port groups, they must also ensure that a monitoring policy applies to the interfaces in that group and is collecting data actively. 15

Responding to Changing Interface Usage Conditions When you see interface usage metrics trending above operational thresholds, you can evaluate the types of activity that the interface is experiencing, which can help you determine whether you need to take action to mitigate or avoid issues. To see all of the interface metrics: In the metric field of the interface, point to the information button. The Utilization Data pop-up window opens, listing the interface s current, minimum, maximum, and average usage metrics. To review the interface activity that might be causing the usage peaks: In the Interface field, click the interface name link. 16

The system navigates to the Performance dashboard Interface tab and filters the information to display the information related to the interface that you selected. 17

Some key information available to you includes: The applications running through the interface most often. Interface traffic metrics. The clients causing the most interface usage. Quality of service (QoS) statistics and trends. Packet errors and discards. With this insight, you can determine whether to take action to ensure optimal interface usage, traffic management, and user experience, such as stopping or diverting certain applications or adding interfaces to support network usage requirements. WAN-Specific Interfaces Experiencing the Most Usage Because WAN interface connectivity is critical to ongoing enterprise communication and network support among sites, Prime Infrastructure reports metrics for WAN-specific interfaces separately in the Top N WAN Interfaces by Utilization dashlet. This dashlet provides all of the same features, functions, and management capabilities available to you on the Top N Interface Utilization dashlet. In this case, rather than port groups, you can evaluate WAN interfaces at a site level. 18

Numbers of Associated or Authenticated Clients The Client Count By Association/Authentication dashlet reports the number of wired clients that were authenticated on or associated with the network. When a client attempts to connect to the network, it becomes associated to it. On association, the system attempts to authenticate that the client can interact with network, which includes whether the client presents the correct security certificates and that its local applications meet network standards, among other requirements, which helps identify that the client is safe to interact with the network. Clients can remain associated with, and interact with, the network, when authentication fails. This information can be helpful for determining network health or identifying the potential for attacks or other issues. You can see the number of associated or authenticated clients in the Client Count By Association/Authentication dashlet. 19

To see wired client count by association or authentication: Below the dashlet title, click the Associated or Authenticated, and then clear the applicable Wireless Count check box. 20

To review a list of clients or access client details: Below the dashlet title, click View Details. The Clients and Users page opens, where you can access client details or take actions, as needed. 21

Alarm, Event, and Syslog Summary Data Alarm, event, and syslog summary data combines reporting of incidents occurring on wired and wireless devices. Based on the time frame that you select on the toolbar, the Incidents tab summarizes: Active network and system alarms and their types. The types of events the system is reporting. Syslog types, the devices reporting the most number of syslogs, and the types of messages that devices are reporting. 22

To open a list of alarms, events, or syslogs for a specific type or severity: In the dashlet of interest that is displaying a pie chart, click the associated pie chart element. The system navigates to and opens the applicable page listing the associated items, so that you can review more details or take actions, as needed. 23

Data Summarized by Site Based on the time frame and site that you select on the toolbar, the Site Summary tab reports: The most used applications by volume or rate for that site. The clients most often accessing the network for that site. The devices reporting the most alarms at that site. The servers reporting the highest traffic rates at that site. 24

Device Views Device View pop-up windows present significant amounts of information, report key performance metrics and activities that are occurring on devices, and provide access to take actions on devices, as needed. The device type determines the information that is available and the actions that you can take in a pop-up window. The following screenshot illustrates a Cisco Catalyst 3560 series switch View pop-up window. Most tables listing a device IP address provide access to View pop-up windows by using the information icon. 25

To open a view pop-up window: Beside the device IP address link, click the information button. The associated View pop up window opens. When information in the pop-up window prompts you to evaluate a device further, you can take immediate actions on the device, open performance metrics graphs, or open detailed device information based on the specific device type. Note: For detailed information on device pop-up window features, refer to the Cisco Prime Infrastructure 3.1 User Guide. 26

Access to Performance Graphs You can review current or evaluate historical performance data for key performance indicators (KPIs) by using the Performance Graphs feature. Performance graphs illustrate key metrics data over time, which can provide insight to the device s environment and factors that might contribute to potential issues. To open the Performance Graphs pop-up window: In the View pop up window, below the Actions drop-down menu, click Performance Graphs. The Performance Graphs pop-up window opens and displays applicable graphs. You can also navigate to display alarms and configuration changes in relationship to the KPI values for the component on which a graph is reporting. Correlating changing KPI values to alarm reporting or configuration changes can provide critical insight into possible issues or issue causes. 27

To navigate to and generate a dedicated list of associated graphs: In the Performance Graphs pop-up window, click View Details. 28

Topology Maps Overview Topology maps illustrate the portions of the network that they represent, including device and interface relationships, neighbors, associated alarms, and the provisioned circuit and network connections. You can monitor network or data center devices by using topology maps. Topology Map Navigation System users can organize network and data center topology maps logically by using location, device type, or custom groups to reflect the organization of the enterprise. When organizing groups, users can include dependent subgroups. For example, a regional group, such as Paris, might have 3 building subgroups, and each building subgroup might have several subgroups to reflect the floors in the building. Logically organizing groups and their dependent hierarchies can help user activities by illustrating key device and network relationships, which can emphasize how issues might affect portions of the network. Important Note: When adding dependent subgroups, ensure that you configure a realistic folder hierarchy that reflects enterprise organization. Group configurations can affect how users see the network and respond to issues, and also can affect other monitoring tools, such as the Network Health dashboard. For more information about the Network Health dashboard and how group organization affects network health views, refer to the Network Health Monitoring Overview job aid. 29

To open a group or subgroup: On the topology map, click a group icon, and then, in the pop-up window, click Drill Down Group. At a device level, you can open a View pop-up window to see issues that the device might be reporting, key device relationships, and other details or to take actions on the device. Tip: You also can add devices that Prime Infrastructure does not manage and link them to the managed portions of the network to ensure that users are seeing an accurate picture of enterprise organization. Note: For more information on network topology map features and navigation, refer to the Cisco Prime Infrastructure 3.1 User Guide. 30

The Network Topology Map Overview Network topology maps present a graphical view of wired and wireless network devices and their relationships. You can monitor device groups based on location, device type, or custom groups. The Alarm Summary list reports the number of alarms for each severity level that are active on the current map. Note: When a series of groups is active on the map, the list reports the number of alarms for all of those groups, inclusively. As you open specific groups, the list updates to report alarms for the devices included in the group or groups that are visible. 31

You also can open the links table in a separate browser window, which, based on the active group or groups, lists the physical links and LAGs and their statuses. 32

The Datacenter Topology Map Overview Datacenter topology maps present a graphical view of the data center devices, including: Nexus switches. Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) blade servers. Fabric interconnect switches. As on network topology maps, data center topology maps illustrate the relationships among data center devices and indicate the highest severity level alarms occurring on devices, when alarms are occurring. This topic addresses features that are unique to data center devices and monitoring. 33

Data Center Concepts vpc and VDC The Virtual Port Channel By allowing physically connected links between two Nexus switches to appear as a single Layer 2 virtual port channel (vpc) to a third downstream device, vpcs are a key technology that the data center leverages to: Provide link redundancy. Increase bandwidth to support higher traffic flow. Balance traffic loads across physical interfaces. The vpc domain, which is the system formed when vpcs are configured, comprises: The primary and secondary peer switches The vpc peer link, which is a logical link that:: Connects the switches and synchronizes their states. Carries control traffic between the two vpc switches. Carries multicast, broadcast data traffic. In specific failure scenarios, carries unicast traffic. The peer keepalive link, which sends periodic messages between the vpc peer switches to monitor whether the originating switch is operating and running the vpc. The keepalive link does not carry any data or synchronization traffic. The physical interfaces, up to 8, on each switch that comprise the port channel. Note: For more information and definitions of the elements that comprise virtual port channels, refer to the Cisco NX-OS Software Virtual PortChannel: Fundamental Concepts 5.0 design guide. Virtual Device Context for Logical Switches Nexus 7000 switches support virtual device context (VDC), a technology that virtualizes a single physical switch into multiple logical switches. Within the framework of the physical switch, each logical switch presents itself as a unique device to connected users and is configured and managed as a separate device. Because VDCs run as separate logical entities within the physical switch, they maintain their own unique set of running software processes, have their own configurations, and are managed by separate administrators. A VDC comprises an Admin VDC, which manages the Child VDCs, including configure the Child VDCs and assigning resources, such as interfaces, to Child VDCs. Child VDCs are the virtual logical switches that perform switch functions. Note: For more information, refer to the Technical Overview of Virtual Device Contexts white paper. The Datacenter Topology map provides tools that support monitoring and managing vpc domain systems and VDCs. 34

Monitoring Virtual Port Channel (vpc) Domains and Components The map illustrates vpc domains and their peer device relationships uniquely, so that while monitoring, you can recognize how data center traffic and connectivity might be affected when switches report potential issues. The encircled solid double lines represent the peer device relationship between two switches. The dotted line above the solid lines represents the peer link that monitors synchronization and carries traffic. Peer link To see the vpc domain: On the map, point to the peer devices. Primary and secondary peer device relationship The map emphasizes and identifies the domain vpc. Note: As on the network topology map, you can click a device icon in a vpc domain to see alarm counts and access the device View. 35

When evaluating a vpc, you can see the physical ports that comprise the link aggregation group (LAG). To see the vpc LAG: On the map, click the solid encircled lines, and then, in the pop-up window, expand the LAG entry. Click the solid, encircled lines 36

Monitoring Virtual Device Context (VDC) Logical Switches The map illustrates VDC logical switches by using icons, so that you can see the switch that houses the Admin VDC, and the Child VDCs that the Admin VDC is managing. To identify the Nexus switches that are running VDCs: On the toolbar, in the Show drop-down menu, under Device Roles, select the Admin VDC or Child VDC check box. The map displays a pink circle on a device to indicate an admin VDC. It displays a purple square icon to indicate a child VDC. 37
