12 Virtual Machine Considerations Virtual Machine Considerations Accessing the Console on a Virtual Machine, page 12 Moving a Virtual Machine Image, page 12 Accessing the Console on a Virtual Machine When accessing the console through a SSH session, you may experience intermittent failures because of network latency. One possible problem is unintended repeated characters. To reduce these effects, follow the procedure for Repeated Characters when Typing in Remote Console for the VMware ESX product in the VMware Knowledge Base (KB). If you incorrectly type the mpxadmin password 3 times when starting a SSH session to the Application Server, then the mpxadmin account is locked. To unlock the account, see Changing or Recovering the Password for the mpxadmin Account on the Application Server at d_recovert.html. Once the command completes, sign out and retry the SSH session. Moving a Virtual Machine Image A virtual machine comprises a set of files, usually in a directory named for that specific virtual machine. If you want to move your virtual machine to another host, then complete one of the following procedures, depending on the storage for your virtual machine: Moving a Virtual Machine Image on Local Storage, page 12 Moving a Virtual Machine Image on a SAN, page 12 For additional information, search for moving a virtual machine on the VMware web site. Moving a Virtual Machine Image on Local Storage Complete the following if you are moving a virtual machine image with a local data store. Refer to the VMware documentation( for complete details on each of these tasks. Perform the following tasks in this order: 1. Download the VMware vcenter Converter from the VMware site, 2. Power off the virtual machine and use the vcenter Converter to move the virtual machine files from the local storage of one host to the other host. Moving a Virtual Machine Image on a SAN Complete the following if you are moving a virtual machine image stored on a SAN. Both the original host and the new host must be connected to the same SAN and visible to the same LUN. 12

13 Virtual Machine Considerations Refer to your VMware documentation( for complete details. Perform the following tasks in this order: 1. Power off the virtual machine. 2. Remove the virtual machine image from the inventory of the original host. Caution Be sure to remove the virtual machine from the host s inventory, and not from the disk itself. 3. Navigate to the virtual machine folder on the data store. Right-click the.vmx file and add it to the virtual machine inventory on the new host. 13
