4 The Problem Single developer (in the beginning ) Life is good, you control everything You can likely just code and not worry about much Update database objects, change reports, modify packages Not much stress Single developer (as time marches on ) May need to start testing changes on a different server May have to deploy some updated reports for testing Add in changes to packages and cubes over time Maintaining multiple copies of code and scripts

5 The Problem (It Gets Worse!) Add another developer Now two of you are changing things Who has the latest copy of that report? Did you deploy that database change to the test server yet? You did what in production??? Add more developers Every additional person complicates the problem Keeping track of who is doing what becomes hard Bugs in various code based may have to be resolved even while other changes to that same code are under way

7 Intro to Team Foundation Server (TFS) Part of the Visual Studio ecosystem Provides two important features for developers Source control (maintains and versions copies of your source code) Work item tracking (provides tracking of tasks, bugs, etc.) Built on other Microsoft technologies SQL Server Analysis Services Reporting Services SharePoint (optional)

8 Various Ways to Use TFS Most common is Team Explorer (Visual Studio add-in) Connect to team project Access source control and add code, check-out, edit, check-in Access to work item tracking to create, update tasks, bugs, etc. Integrates with SSRS reports that show work item tracking data Integrates with SharePoint site for document management TFS Web Portal Browser-based interface to source control and work item tracking Windows Explorer Command-line and PowerShell
