1 Avaya Solution & Interoperability Test Lab Application Notes for Configuring Streamcore StreamGroomers with Avaya Aura Communication Manager R6.0.1 and Avaya Aura Session Manager R6.1 using SIP VoIP/Video Endpoints - Issue 1.0 Abstract These Application Notes describe the configuration steps necessary for provisioning Streamcore StreamGroomers to successfully monitor and control network usage, as well as Avaya voice and video communications performance. Streamcore StreamGroomers regulates the traffic exchanged between LAN and WAN networks. Traffic is monitored and controlled according to VoIP and video rules configured. Information in these Application Notes has been obtained through DevConnect compliance testing and additional technical discussions. Testing was conducted via the DevConnect Program at the Avaya Solution and Interoperability Test Lab. 1 of 29

2 1. Introduction Streamcore StreamGroomers regulate the traffic exchanged between LAN and WAN networks. Traffic is monitored and controlled according to network, application, VoIP and video rules specified by the administrator. Each appliance is seamlessly integrated inline between the LAN and the router and has an automatic bypass feature to ensure transparency in the rare event of a malfunction. Streamcore StreamGroomers are administered by a dedicated port. Several models are available to meet all networking needs either for datacentres and branch offices, depending on the data rates and traffic volumes to be processed. 2. General Test Approach and Test Results The test environment comprises of two locations: the main office or datacentre and a branch office or remote site. The equipments from Streamcore for this compliance test consist of one StreamGroomer Manager (SGM) and two StreamGroomer SG250 s (SG). The SG s lay between the LAN and WAN on each site. Each SG is configured and monitored from the SGM. The SGM is accessed through a HTTP session from any machine on the network and all real time statistics from the SG devices are observed via this one HTTP session to the SGM. Testing for the compliance of StreamGroomer involves observation of the Avaya communications over the network showing loss of quality and other related quality of service (QoS) issues as in most normal network infrastructures that have limited bandwidth. A WAN simulator was used to adjust the size of the bandwidth on the WAN in order to demonstrate such network restrictions and the effects on VoIP and video calls. This WAN simulator was supplied by Streamcore to limit the data rate for all flows at 1 Mbps, while bandwidth hungry traffic such as file transfer was exchanged over the network to compete with VoIP and video calls. The approach of testing was to demonstrate that when such restrictions on bandwidth were in place, the SG would monitor degradations through passive measurements, and improve the QoS on VoIP and more evidently video calls by activating traffic shaping/bandwidth management. The second objective was to ensure that in no way it affected the normal flow of traffic other than to prioritize certain traffic on the network and to improve RTP flow for voice and video calls. 2 of 29

3 2.1. Interoperability Compliance Testing The compliance testing consisted of the following: 1. Basic component connectivity tests to ensure all devices are visible on the network. 2. Observation of the network when the SG250 s were added only in by-pass mode. 3. Observation through monitoring on the SGM of VoIP and video calls with no traffic or bandwidth restrictions on the network. 4. Observation through monitoring on the SGM of VoIP and video calls with a bandwidth restriction of 2Mbps on the WAN and various simulated traffic scenarios on the network. 5. Using the SG to control the WAN traffic and observing the resulting VoIP and video quality improvements both visually and through monitoring on the SGM. 6. Generating reports from the SGM Test Results All tests passed successfully. 4 3. Reference Configuration Figure 1 shows the network topology during compliance testing. The equipment from Streamcore for this compliance test consists of one StreamGroomer Manager (SGM) and two StreamGroomers SG250 s (SG). The SG s lay between the LAN and WAN on each site. Each SG is configured and monitored from the SGM. Configuration of Avaya Aura Communication Manager There is no Streamcore specific configuration required on Avaya Aura Communication Manager and Avaya Aura Session Manager to support this solution. It is assumed that all telephony programming, trunks, dial plans, etc, are already programmed and will not be covered in this document. For detailed information on the installation, maintenance, and configuration of Communication Manager and Session Manager, please reference Section Avaya Aura Communication Manager Check for Video Calls Configurations for Communication Manager are done through Avaya Site Administration supporting System Administration Terminal (SAT). Type display system-parameters customer-options to view the System Parameters Customer-Options (Optional Features) screen. On Page 2 check the Maximum Video Capable Stations field and the Maximum Video Capable IP Softphones field. These two fields show up only if the system is licensed for the Avaya Video Telephony feature. Configuration of Streamcore StreamGroomer This section outlines the steps to configure a StreamGroomer Manager (SGM) and StreamGoomer 250 (SG) out of the box Configuration of Streamcore StreamGroomer Manager Change the IP address of the SGM using a cross-over cable to connect to the SGM in the first instance. The default IP address is in the range Once connected, HTTP to the IP address and log in using the appropriate User and Password. Click on System on the left hand side. Under Parameters and Configuration tabs, change the IP Address of SGM in order to place on the network and click Apply. 8 of 29

9 6.2. Configuration of Streamcore StreamGroomer SG250 Configure the SG for each site with a console connection (Putty or Hyperterminal). The connection setting, via a serial connection, is bauds, 8, none, 1. Enter user name and password. Highlight Name of the StreamGroomer and click on Choice. 9 of 29

10 Enter a desired name as shown below. This StreamGroomer will reside on the main site called DataCenter. Highlight Setting BOOT configuration parameters and click on choice. Change the SGM IP address as shown below and enter the SGM IP address as configured in Section of 29

11 Choose Activate version and save parameters to validate and save those settings. Once the IP addressing has been changed the devices can be put on the network and a new HTTP session opened to the SGM IP address. 11 of 29

12 6.3. Adding the Streamcore StreamGroomer SG250 to the Network The SG is added inline on the network between the WAN router and the LAN. The diagram below shows a simple cabling of an SG250 added to the network. The Blue LAN cable connects to the local network for the site. The Red WAN cable connects to the external router. The Grey Admin cable connects to the local network in order to communicate with the SGM. 12 of 29

13 6.4. Creating the Streamcore StreamGroomer Database for a New Site Log into the SGM as before. Create the database for controlling each SG on the SGM. Click on Databases and the Create tab. Note no uppercase or special characters are allowed, avaya was used in the example below and click on Create to submit. Click on the database that was created and enter user name and password. 13 of 29

14 Setting Up Traffic Management Rules Traffic management rules for each site must be setup and this is site specific depending on what is to be monitored. All information on rules is found under Documentation on the SGM in the following location as shown below. Chapter 7 of StreamView Configuration Guide gives a step by step guide on setting up the various Rules and Groups necessary for a site. 14 of 29

15 6.5. Turning on Network Monitoring or Network Control By entering the IP address of the SGM, the welcome page provides a direct access to the database that was created in Section 6.4. Click on the database name and enter username/password. Please note the names in the left hand pane for monitoring of sites in these Application Notes. 1. Main Site (Datacentre) 2. Remote Site (Remote Site) On all sites the monitoring of QoS is done for the incoming packets to that site. In order to monitor the information pertaining to a site the SG on that site must be changed to enable monitoring. Under STREAMGROOMERS on the left click on DataCenter and click on modify. 15 of 29

16 Change the Operational mode of the SG from Bypass to Monitoring and click submit. To activate Network Control, select Monitoring & control then submit as shown below. With each SG in control mode there is no more congestion on the network due to the SG on each site using buffers to control the network. 16 of 29

17 6.6. PDF Reporting With StreamReport a PDF report consisting of network and VoIP/Video performance data is created based on a predefined template. Change the view from StreamView to StreamReport in order to create a report, as highlighted below. Add a Site report Template for each site as shown below. 17 of 29

18 Select template report VoIP+Video. Choose the rules appropriate for the site. To create a custom schedule click Add a scheduling as shown. 18 of 29

19 Click on Period and choose custom period. Choose a suitable time and date period and click submit. All reports are in PDF format and can be viewed by opening the site in the left hand pane as highlighted and clicking on the View tab. The reports generated for that site will be displayed as shown below. 19 of 29

20 6.7. Using Geographical Map View In order to see a geographical view of sites and the overall network layout as would be seen in a Google Maps view, click on StreamMap as shown below. Clicking on each site will give the address and other logistical information on the site as shown below. There are a number of graphs that will show the site performance in graphical view. 20 of 29

21 7. Verification Steps Verify that both video and voice calls can be made correctly and that the monitoring of the bandwidth used is in real-time. To display a change in real-time statistics the codec of a voice call on the Avaya Communication Manager was changed from G.729A to G.711A and observed the codec displayed on the SGM Verification of User Registration Log into System Manager to check and see that sets are registered correctly. In Session Manager, click on System Status and User Registrations highlighted below. 21 of 29

22 Under User Registrations a list of users that are registered to Session Manager are listed. See the example of user 3000, which is an Avaya 9620 IP Telephone user on the Remote1 site Verification of Real-Time Statistics on the StreamGroomer Manager Go to Services (top left of screen). Open the desired site (DataCenter) and click on Access link DataCenter. Click on Real-time stats and Breakdown to view on a global level what bandwidth is being used. 22 of 29

23 Clicking on the VoIP/Video G.711 along the left hand menu will show information specific to this codec. Clicking on the Troubleshooting tab and VoIP/Video Communication as show below will give a session by session view for each conversation and all network information pertaining to that call. 23 of 29

24 Check on Communication Manager to see what codec is configured. Type in display ip codecset x where x is the codec set in Section 5.1. Change the codec set to only include G.729A using the command change ip-codec-set as shown below. change ip-codec-set 1 Page 1 of 2 Codec Set: 1 IP Codec Set Audio Silence Frames Packet Codec Suppression Per Pkt Size(ms) 1: G K : G K n : G.729A n 2 20 Note the real-time statistics show the G.729A calls only and no other codec. Note the bandwidth used for a G.729A call, including the header and footer, is only 24K. Change the codec set on Communication Manager to include G.711 only and observe the realtime statistics. The total bandwidth now for two simultaneous calls is over 160K. 24 of 29

Monitoring Video Calls with Data Disruption With high data traffic across the network there is a large amount of latency and jitter as well as RTP packet loss for a video call on the Main Site as shown below. Checking the same video call for the remote site will show similar loss depending on which direction the network traffic is most prevalent. 25 of 29

This is also visually observed in the quality of the video calls made there is no missing picture or degradation after control is switched on. 26 of 29

27 7.5. Verification of the reporting For the period scheduled, the PDF report shows a global view of each rules selected with different indicators (rate, latency, loss, discard rate, jitter,etc). 27 of 29

28 8. Conclusion All tests passed with no failures. The addition of the SG s to the network did not impact on the performance of the network. Calls from Avaya Aura Communication Manager R6.0.1 and Avaya Aura Session Manager R6.1 behaved as before the addition of Streamcore StreamGroomers. Monitoring of the SG s through the SGM showed the expected statistics for the various calls that were made. When the network was restricted and QoS was affected the SG was able to improve the QoS on the network and this was shown in the statistics on the SGM as well as a visual observation of the video calls in progress. 9.
