2 EPON Overview 2 EPON Overview This section provides the background information about the Ethernet passive optical network (EPON). More bandwidth is required on a network to support increasing Internet users and fast-developing video conference and large-file transfer services. Optical fiber access is the most effective way to increase the network bandwidth. The EPON system combines the mature and widely-used Ethernet technology and Passive Optical Network (PON) technology to implement point-tomultipoint access on the Ethernet. The EPON system can provide complete optical access solutions such as fiber to the home (FTTH) and fiber to the building (FTTB). The EPON technology can also be used for monitoring and transmitting high-definition video streams in a large enterprise. In addition, the EPON system is applied to the network transmitting voice, video, and data access services. 2

3 EPON Features Supported by the S EPON Features Supported by the S9700 This section describes the EPON features supported by the S9700 series switches. EPON Access As shown in Figure 3-1, the EPON system consists of the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) in the office, the Optical Network Unit (ONU) at the user side, and the Optical Distribution Network (ODN). In the EPON system, data can be transmitted bidirectionally through a single fiber. The ODN provides an optical channel between the OLT and ONU. 13 4 Configuring the EPON Access Service 4.1 Establishing the Configuration Task Applicable Environment Pre-configuration Tasks Data Preparation After years of rapid development, broadband services have been expanded from Internet access to value-added services such as video, interactive gaming, and VoIP. High bandwidth is required for these services, especially the bandwidth-consuming broadband video services such as IPTV. The optical access technology is developed to provide high bandwidth. The xdsl technology will still be used in the future; therefore, fibers and copper cables will coexist on the access layer of the metro Ethernet for a long time. Currently, the access mode should be selected according to the actual situation and requirements of the network and services. The traditional xdsl can be used to provide the broadband access service for common users. In upscale communities or business buildings, the fiber to the home (FTTH) or fiber to the building (FTTB) mode can be used to provide the Internet access service. In this way, differentiated services can be provided to meet requirements of various users. An S9700 switch with Ethernet LPUs and EPON LPUs installed can function as a routing switch and an OLT at the same time. It supports both the traditional access mode and optical access mode to meet the requirements of different users. Before configuring the EPON access service, complete the following task: Ensuring normal communication between the S9700 and the upstream device To configure the EPON access service, you need the following data. No. Data 1 Name of the line profile 2 Name of the dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) profile 3 Bandwidth of ONU 4 Name of the service profile 5 Authentication mode of the ONU 6 Update interval of the key 4.2 Configuring a Line Profile Before adding an ONU, create a line profile. The line profile defines the line parameters of the ONU. 7

4 Configuring the EPON Access Service line-profile line-profile-name A line profile is created and the line profile view is displayed. The switch provides a default line profile default0. If no line profile is configured, you can use the default line profile when adding an ONU. The line profile simplifies configuration of the line parameters. To add an ONU, you only need to bind the ONU to a line profile, and then the switch delivers the line parameters in the profile to the EPON LPU. Step 3 (Optional) dba-profile dba-profile-name A DBA profile is bound to the line profile. Binding a DBA profile to a line profile can limit the bandwidth of the ONU that uses the line profile. Step 4 (Optional) dba-threshold queue-index { q1 value q2 value q3 value q4 value q5 value q6 value q7 value q8 value } * The bandwidth of each queue on the ONU is set. Step 5 (Optional) encrypt triple-churning The encryption mode of the ONU is set. 4.3 (Optional) Configuring a DBA Profile The OLT dynamically allocates bandwidth to uplink interfaces of ONUs according to the parameters in the DBA profile. By configuring a DBA profile, you can set the bandwidth allocation mode and bandwidth parameters uniformly. ONUs with the same bandwidth allocation requirement can be bound to the same DBA profile to simplify the configuration. 8

4 Configuring the EPON Access Service dba-profile dba-profile-name { { type1 fix fix-value [ grant-interval interval grant-length length ] } { type2 assure assure-value } { type3 assure assurevalue max max-value } { type4 max max-value } { type5 fix fix-value assure assure-value max max-value [ grant-interval interval grant-length length ] } } A DBA profile is created and the bandwidth allocation mode is specified. The S9700 provides a default DBA profile default0. The DBA profile specifies the bandwidth allocation mode and bandwidth parameters. Bandwidth is classified into three types: fixed bandwidth, guaranteed bandwidth, and best-effort bandwidth. The DBA profile can define the following bandwidth allocation modes: Type 1: fixed bandwidth Type 2: guaranteed bandwidth Type 3: combination of guaranteed bandwidth and best-effort bandwidth Type 4: maximum bandwidth Type 5: combination of fixed bandwidth, guaranteed bandwidth, and maximum bandwidth 4.4 (Optional) Configuring a Service Profile To manage an ONU in Operation, Administration, and Management (OAM) mode, create a service profile before adding the ONU to the switch. service-profile service-profile-name A service profile is created and the service profile view is displayed. The switch provides a default service profile default0. In most cases, ONUs are located far away from the telecommunications room and deployed across the network, which makes service configuration difficult. To solve this problem, manage ONUs remotely through the switch (OLT). You can use a service profile to deliver service parameters to the ONUs and do not need to configure the services on site. This reduces the workload and expense of service configuration. By using the service profile, you can manage and deliver services to multiple ONUs. For details on how to configure the terminal management service, see 5 Configuring the Terminal Management Service. 9

4 Configuring the EPON Access Service 4.5 (Optional) Configuring an SNMP Profile ONUs are managed in OAM or Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) mode. In SNMP mode, the S9700 delivers management information to the network management system (NMS) using an SNMP profile. snmp-profile snmp-profile-name version { v1 v2 } read-group read-group writegroup write-group dest-ip ip-addrress source-port port-number security-name security-name An SNMP profile is created and the SNMP profile view is displayed. To manage an ONU through SNMP, you need to set the IP address of the ONU first. For details on how to set the IP address of an ONU, see 4.15 (Optional) Assigning an IP Address to an ONU in SNMP Management Mode. 4.6 Adding ONUs Users can go online only after ONUs are added to the OLT (S9700). You can add ONUs manually or configure the OLT to automatically discover ONUs. Adding an ONU manually interface epon interface-number The EPON interface view is displayed. onu add [ onu-id ] { mac-auth mac-value password-auth password-value { always-on once-on { no-aging aging-time time-out } } } { oam lineprofile-name line-profile-name service-profile-name service-profile-name snmp line-profile-name line-profile-name snmp-profile-name snmp-profilename } [ desc describe-value ] 10

4 Configuring the EPON Access Service An ONU is added to the S9700 manually By default, the system provides a default line profile default0 and a default service profile default0. You can modify the parameters of the two default profiles but cannot delete the default profiles. If ONUs are managed using SNMP, configure an SNMP profile first. Adding ONUs that are discovered automatically interface epon interface-number The EPON interface view is displayed. onu-autofind enable Automatic ONU discovery is enabled. onu confirm all { mac-auth password-auth { always-on once-on { noaging aging-time time-out } } } { oam line-profile-name line-profilename service-profile-name service-profile-name snmp line-profile-name line-profile-name snmp-profile-name snmp-profile-name } [ desc describevalue ] or onu confirm[onu-id onu-id ] { mac-auth mac-value passwordauth password-value { always-on once-on { no-aging aging-time timeout } } } { oam line-profile-name line-profile-name service-profile-name service-profile-name snmp line-profile-name line-profile-name snmpprofile-name snmp-profile-name } [ desc describe-value ] The ONUs that are discovered automatically are added to the system. Executing the onu confirm command succeeds only when there are automaticallydiscovered ONUs on the EPON interface. When using the automatic ONU discovery function, you do not need to enter the MAC address or password of each ONU, avoiding incorrect MAC address or password. 4.7 (Optional) Setting the Aging Time of Discovered ONUs Records of the discovered ONUs are saved in the buffer. The system clears the records from the buffer after the ONU aging time expires. 11

5 Configuring the Terminal Management Service 5 Configuring the Terminal Management Service About This Chapter This section describes how to configure the terminal management service. 5.1 Establishing the Configuration Task 5.2 Configuring a Service Profile 5.3 Configuring the Terminal Management Service 5.4 Checking the Configuration 21

5 Configuring the Terminal Management Service 5.1 Establishing the Configuration Task Applicable Environment In most cases, ONUs are located far away from the telecommunications room and deployed across the network, which makes service configuration difficult. To solve this problem, manage ONUs remotely through the switch (OLT). You can use a service profile to deliver service parameters to the ONUs and do not need to configure the services on site. This reduces the workload and expense of service configuration. NOTE The configuration tasks of terminal management services are optional. You can perform the required tasks according to requirements of your network. Pre-configuration Tasks Data Preparation Before configuring the terminal management service, complete the following tasks: Ensuring normal communication between the S9700 and the upstream device Adding ONUs to the S9700 To configure the terminal management service, you need the following data. NOTE The following data is optional and you can plan the data as required. No. Data 1 Service profile 2 VLAN that the logical user-network interface (UNI) of the ONU belongs to 3 Multicast mode 4 Upstream and downstream bandwidth of the UNI interface 5.2 Configuring a Service Profile If ONUs are managed in OAM mode, services are delivered using a service profile. Therefore, configure a service profile before configuring the terminal management service. 22

5 Configuring the Terminal Management Service service-profile service-profile-name A service profile is created and the service profile view is displayed. The S9700 provides a default service profile default0. You can modify the parameters in the default profile but you cannot delete the default profile. The service profile contains the parameter settings of various services. Bind the service profile to an ONU so that service parameters are delivered to the ONU. 5.3 Configuring the Terminal Management Service Perform the following steps on the switch to configure the terminal management service. service-profile service-profile-name A service profile is created and the service profile view is displayed. Step 3 Configure the services that need to be delivered to the ONU in the service profile. You can configure the following services in the service profile. The following operations are optional and can be performed at a random sequence. fec-switch enable The forward error correction (FEC) function is enabled. To ensure communication quality and reduce the bit error rate during the communication, enable the FEC function on the switch. This function, however, wastes bandwidth. Determine whether to enable this function according to the actual situation. multicast-mode { ctc snooping } The multicast mode is set. By default, the multicast mode is Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) snooping. multicast-fast-leave enable Prompt leave of multicast members is enabled. By default, prompt leave of multicast members is disabled. 23

5 Configuring the Terminal Management Service uni multicast-strip-tag eth port-id The user-side interface (UNI) on the ONU is configured to remove the multicast VLAN tag from multicast packets before forwarding those packets. uni vlan eth port-id { vlan-id transparent translation svlan-id user-vlan cvlan-id default-vlan default-vlan-id } A VLAN is specified for the UNI interface. By default, the UNI interface belongs to a transparent VLAN. uni mac-limit eth port-id max-count The maximum number of users allowed by the UNI interface of the ONU is set. uni classification-marking eth port-id rules-index index queue queue-id priority priority-value { { dst-mac mac-address src-mac mac-address eth-pri eth-priority vlan-id vlan-id eth-type type-value dst-ip det-ip-address src-ip src-ip-address ip-type ip-priority ip-tos-dscp tos ip-precedence ipprecedence src-port src-port dst-port dst-port } { equal not-equal greater-equal less-equal exist not-exist match never-match } } &<1-4> A traffic classifier is configured on the UNI interface of the ONU. You can configure up to eight traffic classifiers. Each classifier consists of a maximum of four rules. uni car eth port-id cir cir-value { pir pir-value outbound cbs cbs-vlalue ebs ebs-value inbound } The maximum upstream bandwidth and downstream bandwidth of the UNI interface on the ONU are set. 5.4 Checking the Configuration The terminal management service configuration is complete. 32 6 Configuring the EPON VLAN Service 6 Configuring the EPON VLAN Service About This Chapter This section describes how to configure the EPON VLAN service. 6.1 Establishing the Configuration Task 6.2 Configuring the Default VLAN for an ONU 6.3 Configuring Single-Tag VLAN Mapping 6.4 Configuring Double-Tag VLAN Mapping 6.5 Configuring VLAN Stacking 6.6 Maintaining the EPON Access Service This section describes how to clear the traffic statistics of ONUs collected by the OLT. 6.7 Clearing the Traffic Statistics of an ONU 26

6 Configuring the EPON VLAN Service 6.1 Establishing the Configuration Task Applicable Environment The EPON interface of the S9700 supports the following VLAN services: VLAN tag: The EPON interface adds VLAN tags to untagged packet sent upstream to identify packets sent from different ONUs. VLAN mapping: In a tagged packet sent from an ONU, the tag identifies the service type or location of the user. This type of packet cannot be transmitted on the public network. Therefore, the VLAN tag of the packet sent from the ONU is mapped to a public VLAN tag. VLAN stacking: The EPON interface can add a VLAN tag to a tagged packet sent from the ONU so that the customer VLAN ID is transparently transmitted on the ISP network. You can configure different VLAN services based on the actual situation and requirement of your network. NOTE The configuration tasks of VLAN services are optional and can be performed at a random sequence. Pre-configuration Tasks Data Preparation Before configuring the EPON VLAN service, complete the following tasks: Ensuring normal communication between the S9700 and the upstream device Adding ONUs to the S9700 To configure the EPON VLAN service, you need the following data. NOTE The following data is optional and is prepared as required. No. Data 1 Default VLAN ID 2 Inner VLAN ID and outer VLAN ID of packets and mapped inner VLAN ID and outer VLAN ID for VLAN mapping 3 VLAN ID added to tagged packets for VLAN stacking 6.2 Configuring the Default VLAN for an ONU Perform the following steps on the switch to specify the default VLAN for an ONU. 27

6 Configuring the EPON VLAN Service interface epon interface-number The EPON interface view is displayed. Step 3 onu onu-id1 [ - onu-id2 ] The ONU view is displayed. You can enter the ONU view only when the specified ONU has been added to the switch. Step 4 port default-vlan vlan-id [ batch-start ] The default VLAN ID is specified for the ONU. After the default VLAN ID is specified for an ONU, the switch adds the default VLAN tag to the untagged packets sent from this ONU. Then the switch identifies different users according to the VLAN tags in their packets. 6.3 Configuring Single-Tag VLAN Mapping After single-tag VLAN mapping is configured, two VLANs with IP addresses on the same network segment can communicate with each other. interface epon interface-number The EPON interface view is displayed. Step 3 onu onu-id1 [ - onu-id2 ] The ONU view is displayed. You can enter the ONU view only when the specified ONU has been added to the switch. Step 4 28

6 Configuring the EPON VLAN Service port vlan-mapping vlan vlan-id1 [ to vlan-id2 ] map-vlan vlan-id3 [ batch-start ] [ remark-8021p 8021p copy-8021p ] Single-tag VLAN mapping is configured. Step 5 quit The EPON interface view is displayed. Step 6 port hybrid tagged vlan vlan-id3 The translated outer VLAN is allowed by the EPON interface. The EPON interface must be added to the translated outer VLAN so that packets of this VLAN can pass the EPON interface as tagged packets. Otherwise, the VLAN mapping service does not take effect. 6.4 Configuring Double-Tag VLAN Mapping When two private networks in different VLANs communicate with each other through a public network, the user packets may contain one or two VLAN tags when reaching the public network. Configure double-tag VLAN mapping on the edge device of the public network so that the VLANs of private networks and the public network can be separated. This saves VLAN resources of the public network. Compared with single-tag VLAN mapping, double-tag VLAN mapping is more flexible and used in a wider scope. interface epon interface-number The EPON interface view is displayed.
