Getting connected Connection methods Recently, the internet has come to dominate many people s lives, and nowadays you can access the internet via a wide range of devices: mobile phones, games consoles, interactive TV, even some fridges! Some internet connections are always on so the internet will be available on your device whenever it is turned on; others, like dial-up connections or wireless connections in public places, need you to specifically connect. Click the connection symbol to get started. page 1 of 6
There is a big difference between the speeds of different internet connections. Broadband connections are much faster than dial-up connections in general, although broadband speeds vary hugely, depending on whether they are accessed through cable, phone lines, satellites or mobile services. People in rural locations also tend to have slower connections than those in cities. Obtaining access If you re connecting at home, then you ll have been provided with a modem by your Internet Service Provider - it may have been set up before it was sent to you, or you may need to fill in the details they have provided. If you are connecting wirelessly, you ll need to make sure your equipment is Wi-Fi enabled and that you have the correct Wi-Fi password, if one is required. Click on the Wi-Fi symbol to continue. page 2 of 6
Wi-Fi allows you to connect to the internet and to other equipment without cables. Normally to connect to a Wi-Fi network you will need a password, as these networks have special security systems to stop people in the vicinity from using them freely. It is a good idea to set up a password, often called a WAP key, if you have a home wireless connection. page 3 of 6
Obtaining access (2) Home connections will pass through your modem, and this will connect to the phone line or to your cable connection. The modem may be reliant on being attached to a computer, or it may be built-in to what s called a router. The router will establish the connection to the internet and then any devices that you want to use the internet on, simply connect to your router, either physically (in the case of a wired connection) or if the equipment supports it, wirelessly. Click on the home router to connect. With a wired connection, a cable is plugged into your computer from the router or modem to carry the necessary signal. A wired connection usually gives a stronger signal than a wireless connection and is simpler to set up, but has the disadvantage that the user must stay in one place. A wired connection is also more secure and so is often set up without a password. page 4 of 6
Obtaining access (3) Home broadband normally has a fixed monthly cost, provided you don t exceed the usage limits. Mobile internet is usually added to your mobile phone bill, on a pay-asyou-go or a monthly payment method. When you re out and about, some wireless hotspots are free; others work on a voucher system, and others you can pay for by card. Click the public hotspot. page 5 of 6
If you are asked for your credit card details when setting up a connection, then important security measures should be followed. You ll need firewall and anti-virus protection first. Is the transaction being handled by a recognised company? Most importantly, only pay where there is a web address beginning with https and a padlock symbol on screen. Obtaining access (4) As you can see there s a lot of ways to get on the internet, but connecting is really only the beginning. Why not try the practice to test what you have learnt so far. page 6 of 6
