1 Overview How to set up Thecus NAS as storage repositories on Citrix This article will guide the administrator into mounting an iscsi Target from Thecus NAS onto a Citrix XenServer. This article was created with a Citrix XenServer 6.0, and a Thecus NAS N4200 with firmware v Create an iscsi Target on Thecus NAS Please make sure that an iscsi Target has been created on Thecus NAS and is ready for use. Please carefully read the notes below before you begin * You will need a completed RAID system before creating iscsi targets. * You may specify the space allocated for iscsi volume. Up to five iscsi volumes can be created per RAID volume. 1. In the Web GUI, click Storage >Space Allocation to open the Space Allocation page. Please see the following table for detailed descriptions of each option 1/15 12/23/2011

2 2. Next, click on Add to open the Create iscsi Volume windows as shown below Please see the following table for detailed decriptions of each field 3. On the Create iscsi Volume page, allocate the amount of space for the iscsi target volume. 4. Enable the iscsi Target Service by selecting Enable. 2/15 12/23/2011

3 5. Enter a Target Name. This will be used by the Stackable NAS function to identify this export share. In this guide, we will name it "thecus" 6. Select the current year from the iqn_year dropdown bar. 7. Select the current month from the iqn_month dropdown bar. 8. Select a LUN ID number. * iqn_year and Month will be used to name the iscsi target volume. * Logical Unit Number. A logical unit number (LUN) is a unique identifier which enables it to differentiate among separate devices (each one is a logical unit). 9. Select CHAP to enable authentication or choose None if you don't want to. In this guide, we select None. 10. Click the OK button to proceed. 11. A new window will appear as below. Click Yes to proceed and start creating the iscsi volume. 12. A new window will appear as below. Click OK to proceed. 13. The page will automatically return to the Space Allocation page as shown below. You can see that the iscsi target named "thecus" appears under the Volume Allocation List. 3/15 12/23/2011

4 Connect XenServer to the iscsi Target How to set up Thecus NAS as storage repositories on Citrix 1. Right click your XenServer under XenCenter and select "New Storage Repository". 2. Select Software iscsi under "Virtual disk storage" and click "Next" 3. Enter a name and path for the new iscsi storage a. Enter a name for the NAS (storage repository) 4/15 12/23/2011

5 b. Enter the NAS IP c. If you have enabled iscsi CHAP authentication on the NAS, select the option "Use CHAP" and enter the authentication information. if no, please skip this one and go next. d. Click "Discover IQNs" to get the target list from NAS. XenServer will discover all the iscsi targets on the NAS. 5/15 12/23/2011

6 4. The target list has been updated, select the target you want to use. Click "Discover LUNs" to detect all the LUNs mapped to the target. 5. Select the LUN you want to use and click "Finish". 6/15 12/23/2011

7 6. XenServer will scan the LUN. If the LUN is a new one, XenServer will propose to format the LUN in order to use it as a storage repository. Click "Yes" to format the LUN. All the data will be destroyed. 7. When the operation has completed, the storage repository will be shown. 8. Click the storage repository, the status and multipath information will be shown. Thecus NAS supports MPIO and XenServer, if your NAS has more than one IP address, you can use this feature by enabling "Multipathing". The number of active paths will be shown. 7/15 12/23/2011

8 Multipath configuration on XenServer How to set up Thecus NAS as storage repositories on Citrix There is no required operation on Thecus NAS. Multipathing is supported natively. 1. Right click your XenServer and select "Enter Maintenance Mode". Note that you may need to shut down all the running virtual machines. 2. Click "Enter Maintenance Mode". 8/15 12/23/2011

9 3. Right click your XenServer and select "Properties". 4. Under "Multipathing", checkbox "Enable multipathing on this server". 9/15 12/23/2011

10 5. Right click your XenServer and select "Exit Maintenance Mode". Create a new VM on the new storage repository 1. Right click your XenServer. 2. Click "New VM" 10/15 12/23/2011

11 3. Choose a template and click "Next". (Here example we use Windows 7) 4. Enter a name for your VM and click "Next". 11/15 12/23/2011

12 5. Select the media for the CD/DVD-ROM drive and click "Next". 6. Set the number of CPU and memory quantity and click "Next". 12/15 12/23/2011

13 7. Select the pre-existing location for the virtual disk location, click "Properties". 8. Specify the size of the virtual hard drive. Select the location Thecus iscsi virtual disk storage and then click "OK". 13/15 12/23/2011

14 9. The virtual disk on the NAS is shown and click "Next". 10. Set up your Virtual Interface Network and click "Next". Windows 7 will be installed to new storage repository. 14/15 12/23/2011
