2 Transmission speed of the Internet 1 Moore s Law describes that the processing speed of semiconductors has risen about 100 fold every ten years. However, the transmission speed of Internet has risen about ten thousand fold for this ten years. 4 Current Status of Broadband(availability) 3 Virtually 100% of households are ensured of having access to broadband. About 90% are ensured of having access to fiber to the home (FTTH). 5 Current Status of Broadband(subscribers) 4 Total number of broadband subscribers is about 31 million. More than 50% (about 16 million)are FTTH subscribers. 7 Fixed Mobile Convergence(FMC) 6 Fixed Mobile Convergence(FMC), which enables seamless voice and data services between mobile and fixed networks. FMC s can switch to fixed network in the home and office, and switch to mobile networks outside. 9 Nationwide Broadband Deployment 8 The areas where broadband service is unavailable (March 2009) 340 thousand households cf. Total households: about 53 million Public Support Program for Local Governments In rural areas, the private sector has not invested much in broadband infrastructure as the return on such investment remains very low. The central government supports local governments installing broadband networks in such areas. 340 thousand households will have access to broadband Broadband services will be made available to all the households before the end of FY 2010.
