Agenda ZigBee Overview ZigBee Provides Connectivity Between Devices and Utilities ZigBee Powers Energy Efficiency Perspective from Government and Electric Utilities 22
Why is Efficiency Important? - Macro Trend of US Energy Issues Electricity demand in the U.S. is expected to grow by 135,000 megawatts in the next decade while only 77,000 megawatts of new resources have been identified, leaving a shortfall of 58,000 megawatts, an amount equivalent to 110 large power plants. - WSJ October 16, 2006; on recent report from NERC 23
Why is Efficiency Important? - Macro Trend of US Energy Issues Legislative environment is waking up to the importance of consumer demand management 2005 U.S. Energy Policy Act The policy of the U.S. is to encourage time-based pricing and other forms of demand response and that deployment of devices to enable consumers to participate in these programs be facilitated. 24
Why is Efficiency Important? - Macro Trend of US Energy Issues Awareness of Global Warming spreads Former Vice President Al Gore addresses San Jose Embedded Systems Conference in April
Why is Efficiency Important? - Macro Trend of US Energy Issues DOE Vision: Smart Devices Mechanisms to reduce peak demand include time-ofuse pricing, load management devices such as smart thermostats, load-shifting technologies such as energy storage, and peak-eliminating techniques such as distributed generation and thermally activated heating, cooling, and humidity control devices. Grid 2030 A National Vision for Electricity s Second 100 Years; US Department of Energy 26
Regulatory Bodies - Charting the Course a HAN communications system in support of demand response applications based on an open standard architecture that complies with nationally recognized nonproprietary standards such as ZigBee - Advanced Metering rules adopted May
SCE s Vision for Advanced Metering SCE, Southern California Edison, envisions a potential advanced metering system as one that could bring customer usage and meter data into the digital central nervous system of its power operations. An advanced metering system could be the information backbone for technologies that measure usage and power quality, and enable dynamic pricing and demand response. The advanced system may enable customer-premise information and automation. SCE s AMI Program was recognized as the 2005/2006 Best AMR Initiative in a North American Investor-Owned Utility in August 2006 by the Utility Planning Network. The scope of SCE s metering solution is to replace approximately 5 million electric meters for SCE s residential, commercial and industrial customers (below 200kW in demand) While SCE is an electric utility, we anticipate that the preferred solution would provide a communications network that could be leveraged by gas and water utilities in our service territory. Source: SCE website [ 28
Emerging Drivers for AMI and HANs Empower customers to manage their energy costs and provide new services through smart technology Create lasting customer value through cost-effective advanced metering technology solutions Design to support Federal and State Energy Policy Objectives Enhance competition in competitive retail markets Support energy efficiency efforts and reduce new supply requirements Support strategy of modernizing our infrastructure with smart technologies toward an intelligent grid SCE Edison SmartConnect Program Objectives: Create 1,000 MW of new peak demand response 29
U.S. Home Energy Today Today, 67% of the average household utility bill is attributed to temperature control and lighting. 30
