Overview: TechNotes Revision 3/3/2011 Third-Party Access Point Setup Basics There are many instances where you may wish to add additional Access Points (AP) to a system. Typically, an additional AP is hardwired to the main router, and allows devices to connect to the LAN wirelessly. Wireless devices connected to the AP will then be on the same network as the main router. This document provides basic explanation of the network concepts and setup advice when building an expanded wireless network, and is not intended to be a comprehensive setup guide for every situation. As always, if you do not understand networking, it may be best to consult with a network professional for setup advice. Terms: Common Terms when setting up AP s: 1. LAN: An acronym for Local Area Network. This refers to the internal network created in the install, typically behind the router. All of the internal network devices connected behind your router are typically part of the same network, or LAN. 2. WAN: An acronym for Wide Area Network. This typically will refer to the internet connection. On a broad scale, your internet connection is a client in your Internet Service Providers network, along the same lines as a laptop may be a client within your LAN. 3. Router: Routers are used to bridge Internet connections (WAN) to multiple network computers in a LAN, and typically also provide firewall protection to everything connected to the LAN. Routers also are typically DHCP servers to provide dynamic addressing for network devices. Wireless routers are also used to bridge wired and wireless networks together into one network. You may also look at a wireless router as a wired LAN switch and wireless AP in a single box, with a few other features. 4. AP: Shorthand for Access Point. Access Points typically have single LAN connector, and a Wireless radio, which they use to bridge wired and wireless devices into one network. AP s are typically added to a wired LAN to provide additional wireless signal coverage; or add different wireless features to a wireless network, such as adding Wireless N AP s for the homeowner s new laptops, while older WiFi devices connect to Wireless G AP s. Additional routers can optionally be added to a network and used as AP s instead: see below for details. 5. DHCP: Acronym that describes the process of dynamically assigned IP s. In a DHCP setup, network devices (ex. Laptop) are set to receive their IP address dynamically, and a DHCP Server is setup on the router with a specified DHCP range. The router will assign an IP address from the range of available addresses to any new dynamic clients that connect to it (such as a laptop). 6. Firewall: A network protection that restricts access to the LAN from the WAN. 7. SSID: The wireless network identifier. Different SSID s do not necessarily mean different networks, just different AP s. 8. Wireless (or WiFi) B: B is an international standard for Wireless 2.4 GHz transmissions of up to 11Mbits. This is an older standard that is becoming less common. Tech Support: Page 1 of 5

9. Wireless (or WiFi) G: G is an international standard for Wireless 2.4 GHz transmissions of up to 54Mbits. This is the most common wireless standard in use. 10.Wireless (or WiFi) N: N is an international standard for Wireless 5GHz transmissions of up to 600Mbits. This standard was ratified in 10/2009 and is not yet widespread. Since Wireless N is a different frequency, it requires a different radio for WiFi than G, and some N routers/ap s do not support G and N mode simultaneously meaning the unit will slow down to just G mode. Bear this in mind when selecting equipment. 11.WEP: Security (encryption) standard for wireless transmissions that typically uses hex keys for network access. 12.WPA/WPA2: Security (encryption) standard for wireless transmissions that typically uses a pass code for network access. WPA was intended to replace WEP with better encryption. WPA2 is a newer, more secure version of WPA. 13.TKIP/AES: Encryption types used in WPA/WPA2 networks. Guidelines for setting up Access Points: Wire Access Points with Cat-5 to the LAN of the router or a switch connected to the LAN of the router. Placement and number needed will vary from house to house, depending on everything from size to building materials, so you may want to add one AP during pre-wire and move it to different locations while walking around the house with a laptop or wireless tablet to check the range and look for dead spots. Add as many AP s as required for good signal coverage in all needed areas. SSID: When AP s are added to a network to increase range or add features (ex. add faster N to existing network), you may either setup all AP s to the same SSID for single wireless network to connect to, or you may setup each AP with its own SSID. Remember, SSID s are only identifying the wireless radio; they are not necessarily identifying a different LAN. Typically, it is recommended to set each AP to a unique SSID so that you know which one you are connecting to. If you set all AP s to the same SSID, it is difficult to be certain what AP you are connected to. You may wish to program each AP into the preferred wireless connection area of the end users laptop computers if they find this confusing. Note that their laptops may have an Auto mode that will automatically seek between preferred networks, making the process more transparent to the end user. It is strongly discouraged to set all AP s with one SSID if you are using Wireless Tablets. Elan Wireless Tablets: Note that when setting up Wireless Tablets, Elan recommends setting up a unique AP in the room where each Wireless Tablet will be located, assigning that AP a unique SSID, and marrying the Wireless Tablet to that one room and AP: Wireless Tablets do not roam well. Wireless Tablets do not roam well because they will continue to receive a strong signal from the more powerful transmitter in an AP beyond the point where they can reliably transmit anything back with their battery powered radio. If you must setup a Wireless Tablet that will wander, apprise the end user of potential roaming issues at the beginning! You may be able to setup a number of AP s around the house with reduced transmit power to encourage the Wireless Tablet to lose connections and search for a better one faster but there is still likely to be some latency. Tech Support: Page 2 of 5

Access Point Wireless Modes: AP s support several modes of operation. Below are brief, broad descriptions of what the modes do. Note that the availability of modes may vary depending the manufacturer or model of the AP you are using. In the majority of installs, you will simply be using AP s as AP s, and these additional modes will not be used. See the AP manufacturer documentation and support, or seek the assistance of a networking professional if you require support and assistance with any advanced AP modes. Access Point: This is the mode used in the majority of installs. The AP is hardwired to the LAN, and wireless clients connect to the AP to join the LAN. Bridge, or WDS: This mode is used for bridging via WiFi, and is the process of connecting two portions of one network via WiFi that cannot be wired together. Bridging creates Point to Point links. Note that Bridging is not part of the international standard, and implementation varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, so if you do need to wirelessly bridge it s recommended to use all one brand of gear. Client: This mode makes the AP act more or less as a WiFi card, and is used for connecting a device wired to the AP via WiFi to a separate WiFi gateway. Repeater: In this mode, an AP acts like a Client half the time, receiving data from a WiFi gateway; and then switches to an AP mode to repeat the data received in client mode to its own clients. When in this mode, throughput is reduced 50%. Combination Modes: Some models support combination modes, such as Bridging + AP. These modes combine the features of other modes in some way. See manufacturer documentation for full details. AP Configuration: 1. Configure Wireless settings. a. Ensure Access Point Wireless Mode is set to Access Point. b. Configure wireless security settings. Set these values as desired for your network. c. Wireless SSID should be enabled, and each router should have a unique SSID so you can properly associate wireless tablets with the nearest AP. Wireless tablets do not roam well and should be married to one room, and one AP. d. It also may be desirable to set AP s to a different wireless channel than the main router to limit interference. Auto channel select (if available) may also be a good choice, to allow the AP to automatically use the channel with the least interference. Note that channels 2, 6, and 11 are usually less prone to interference as these frequencies are not used by anything but WiFi. 2. Assign the IP. Access Points need to have a static IP address on the correct network. If the router in the install is from Elan, by default the Elan router will be set to , with a dynamic (DHCP) range of Elan recommends setting AP s to static IP s starting at , and you can set the AP following this convention. If you are not using an Elan router, or are using an Elan router that follows an atypical convention, you may set the AP to any LAN IP that is unused and outside your DHCP range. a. Set the AP s LAN IP to a static IP that is available on the routers network. Refer to documentation for your third-party AP for specifics, but this is typically set under Networking or LAN setup. b. Make sure the IP is not within the DHCP range of the router (default: ). c. Make sure no other devices already exist at this IP address. d. Suggested 1 st LAN IP for AP s: , second LAN IP (and so on). Tech Support: Page 3 of 5

3. Disable DHCP (relevant models). Some AP s may support running a DHCP server. Typically, on Access Points, this should be disabled by default. Ensure this is disabled: the main router will handle all dynamic addressing. This may be under LAN or Network Settings, or under Advanced. Using additional routers as Access Points: It may be convenient or less expensive to use routers converted to AP s instead of actual AP s. An advantage of this situation may also include having some local hardwire LAN ports in another area of the house without adding separate switches and AP s (most routers have a 4 port switch inside one of which will be used by this process). Note the router configuration will vary from router to router, and this is intended as a general guideline. To wire this setup, connect a Cat-5 cable from LAN to LAN. Some routers may have a button that will accomplish the steps we outline in one press, but there still may need to be configuration changes beyond clicking that one button, so be sure to double-check settings afterwards. Below is a guide to make the changes manually; also use this as a reference to verify changes if your router has a magic AP Mode button. For initial setup you will likely need to have a Cat-5 cable going from your computer directly into one of the LAN ports on the router. Note that using a Router as an AP may have some drawbacks, as some routers do not want to disable Gateway mode entirely; or do not support all the features and modes of a normal access point. Routers may also initially have the same LAN IP as your main router, and you may wish to configure the AP individually prior to adding it into your LAN. Router to AP Configuration: 1. Turn off the DHCP server. In this setup, we already have a router on the network handing out DHCP addresses, so the first step to using a 2 nd router as an AP is to disable the DHCP server. This will prevent the router/ap from handing out any IP addresses: we strictly can t have two DHCP servers on the same network. This setting might be under LAN or network setup/settings, and will likely be under a heading labeled DHCP Server, DHCP Settings, or Dynamic Addressing. Additionally, if your router has a setting to turn NAT on or off, set this to OFF. Note that the NAT setting may be under advanced settings or may not be an accessible setting on all routers. 2. Disable the Firewall. If it is possible to turn off the firewall, you may wish to disable this as it will not be used nothing will be connected to the WAN port. 3. Configure Wireless settings. First, configure wireless security settings. Set these values as desired for your network. Wireless SSID should be enabled, and each router should have a unique SSID so you can properly associate wireless tablets with the nearest AP. Wireless tablets do not roam well and should be married to one room, and one AP. It also may be desirable to set AP s to a different wireless channel than the main router to limit interference. Auto channel select (if available) may also be a good choice, to allow the AP to automatically use the channel with the least interference. Note that channels 2, 6, and 11 are usually free these frequencies are not used by anything but WiFi. Tech Support: Page 4 of 5

4. Change the IP. As an AP, the additional router needs to have a static IP address on the correct network. Set the router/ap s LAN IP to a static IP that is available on the routers network. Refer to documentation for your third-party router for specifics, but this is typically set under Networking or LAN setup. Make sure the IP is not within the DHCP range of the router (default: ). Make sure no other devices already exist at this IP address. a. Suggested 1 st LAN IP for AP s: , second LAN IP (and so on). Tech Support: Page 5 of 5
