1 Product Introduction 1 Product Introduction 1.1 Product Positioning The MA5612 is the multi-service optical network unit (ONU) launched by Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Huawei). The SmartAX MA5612 Multi-service Access Module (hereinafter referred to as the MA5612) is mainly applied in fiber to the building (FTTB) and fiber to the curb (FTTC) scenarios. In addition, the MA5612 can meet certain requirements of private line access. 1.2 Application Scenarios MA5612 applies to FTTB(C) Network, Enterprise Private Line Access Network, Base Station Private Line Access Network and Network Application of the Clock and Time Synchronization FTTB(C) Network Application Networking Diagram The MA5612 supports fiber to the building (FTTB) and fiber to the curb (FTTC) network applications for providing voice, data, and video services for community users. FTTB networking is similar to FTTC networking. The only difference lies in the position of the MA5612 in the networking. Figure 1-1 shows the FTTB(C) networking diagram for the MA

1 Product Introduction Figure 1-1 FTTB(C) networking diagram Networking Description The MA5612 supports FE and POTS ports for residential users. Applied in the GPON network featuring wide coverage, flexible networking, and low maintenance cost, the MA5612 can work with the OLT to provide high-bandwidth access services for users and to expand the access capacity of the OLT. TheMA5612 (with the RF port) provides the perfect radio frequency (RF) overlay solution that supports transmitting the CATV service over the GPON. In the CATV network application, a wavelength is added for transmitting the CATV RF signals over the existing GPON system so that the CATV service can be carried in the optical lines. The CATV networking is operable, manageable, and maintainable. It also can be smoothly upgraded in future to meet the increasing service and bandwidth requirements Enterprise Private Line Access Network Application Functioning as the single business unit (SBU), the MA5612 provides broadband, PBX, and circuit private-line access services. Networking of the TDM PBX Service The MA5612 accesses the TDM PBX service of the enterprise through the E1/T1 port. Figure 1-2 Figure 1-3shows the networking of the TDM PBX service. 2

1 Product Introduction Figure 1-2 Networking of the TDM PBX service 1 The MA5612 accesses the voice service of the enterprise through the E1 port. The MA5612 transmits services to the OLT using the native TDM. The OLT transmits the voice service upstream to the SDH or PSN network. Figure 1-3 Networking of the TDM PBX service 2 The MA5612 accesses the voice service of the enterprise through the E1 (PRA) port. The MA5612 can configure a maximum of two E1 ports as PRA ports. The MA5612 encapsulates the voice service packets into IP packets and transmits the packets upstream to the upper-layer device. Networking of the Enterprise Router Service The MA5612 accesses the data service of the enterprise router or L3 switch through the FE/GE port and transmits the data service upstream to the IP network through the OLT. Figure 1-4 shows the networking of the enterprise router service. 3

The QinQ VLAN private line is configured on both MA5612_1 and MA5612_2 so that the service data and BPDUs between private enterprise networks can be transparently transmitted on the public network. This provides a transparent and secure data channel for private enterprise networks that are located in different places Base Station Private Line Access Network Application Networking Diagram Functioning as a base station access gateway, the MA5612 is connected to the base station through TDM E1, and is connected to the base station controller (BSC) through the upper layer network to implement the base station private line access on the network. Figure 1-5 shows a network of base station private line access through the MA5612. 11 1 Product Introduction Networking Description The MA5612 receives time division multiplexing (TDM) service data from a base station using an E1 line, encapsulates the TDM service data, and then transmits the packets upstream to the optical line terminal (OLT) in native TDM mode. Any E1 port on the MA5612 can be used for TDM service emulation. The native TDM technology used on the MA5612 directly encapsulates TDM frames in GPON GEM frames in TDMoGEM mode. This mode features simple encapsulation, small network overhead, and good link quality. The OLT transmits the data upstream to the PSN or SDH network, and then the data is transmitted to the BSC Network Application of the Clock and Time Synchronization Functioning as the gateway of the base station, the MA5612 can recover packet clock signals transmitted over the packet switched network (PSN) network, and transmit the clock signals to the base station. Networking Diagram of the Clock Synchronization Figure 1-6 shows the network application of the clock synchronization on the MA5612. Figure 1-6 Network application of the clock synchronization Networking Description The optical line terminal (OLT) can extract clock signals from the metropolitan area network (MAN) using an upstream gigabit Ethernet (GE) port in synchronous Ethernet mode. The OLT can also extract clock signals from an E1/T1 line or an external building integrated timing supply (BITS). The MA5612 transmits clock signals to the base station using an E1/T1 port, a time/clock port, or a GE or fast Ethernet (FE) synchronous Ethernet port. This solution can meet the requirements of the base station for 50 ppb clock frequency. 5

1 Product Introduction Networking Diagram of the Time Synchronization Figure 1-7 shows the network application of the time synchronization on the MA5612. Figure 1-7 Network application of the time synchronization Networking Description The OLT can extract time signals from the GPS through an external BITS. The MA5612 transmits time signals to the base station using a GE, an FE, or a time/clock port. This solution can meet the requirements of the base station for microsecond- or even nanosecond-level phase. 1.3 Product Features Various Services This topic describes the features of the MA5612. The U2000 provides abundant management functions including the following: security management, topology management, alarm management, performance management, inventory resources management, log management, database management, network element (NE) communication parameter management, NE software management, report management, and system monitoring. The U2000 communicates with ONUs using the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and supports inband and outband management modes. Figure 4-2 shows an example network of ONU management using the U

4 Operation and Maintenance Figure 4-2 ONU management using the U2000 U2000 client A U2000 client B Integrated network management center U2000 OLT OLT ONU ONU Service & inband management channel Outband management channel Inband network management mode: In this mode, the interaction messages between the U2000 and an ONU are transmitted over the service channel of the ONU and no additional device is required. This mode is cost-effective and supports flexible networking. However, the maintenance operations cannot be performed if the device service channel becomes faulty. Outband network management mode: In this mode, the interaction messages between the U2000 and an ONU are transmitted through a non-service channel. This mode provides a more reliable device management channel. When a fault occurs on the device, users can use the dedicated management channel to locate the fault and monitor the device in real time. This mode requires an additional device to provide a management channel that is independent of the device service channel. 30
