1 November 2004 Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit Media Converter Module Installation Instructions Overview Purpose Introduction Qualified Personnel These installation instructions provide product information and instructions for installing the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit Media Converter module. The Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module solution connects two remote networks over fiber optics and allows administrators to observe both the end-points and the fiber link between them as a single management entity and not as separate networks. No host management traffic is visible to the remote or customer network nor is access to the customer network required, guaranteeing end-to-end data integrity. Only appropriately qualified and trained personnel should install, operate, maintain, and service this product. WARNING: Allow only qualified personnel to install, operate, maintain, and service this product. Otherwise, personal injury or equipment damage may occur.

3 Important Safety Instructions Read and Retain Instructions Carefully read all safety and operating instructions before operating this equipment, and retain them for future reference. Follow Instructions and Heed Warnings Follow all operating and use instructions. Pay attention to all warnings and cautions in the operating instructions, as well as those that are affixed to this equipment. Electrostatic Discharge EMC Electrostatic discharge (ESD) results from the static electricity buildup on the human body and other objects. This static discharge can degrade components and cause failures. Take the following precautions against electrostatic discharge: Use an anti-static bench mat and a wrist strap or ankle strap designed to safely ground ESD potentials through a resistive element. Keep components in their anti-static packaging until installed. Avoid touching electronic components when installing a module. Where this equipment is subject to USA FCC and/or Industry Canada rules, the following statements apply: FCC Statement for Class A Equipment This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures: Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna. Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver. Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected. 5 Laser Safety Introduction This equipment contains an infrared laser that transmits intensity-modulated light and emits invisible radiation. Warning: Radiation WARNINGS: Avoid personal injury! Use of controls, adjustments, or performance of procedures other than those specified herein may result in hazardous radiation exposure. Avoid personal injury! The laser light source on this equipment emits invisible laser radiation. Avoid direct exposure to the laser light source. Do not apply power to this equipment if the fiber is unmated or unterminated. Do not stare into an unmated fiber or at any mirror-like surface that could reflect light that is emitted from an unterminated fiber. Do not view an activated fiber with optical instruments (e.g., eye loupes, magnifiers, microscopes). Use safety-approved optical fiber cable to maintain compliance with applicable laser safety requirements. Warning: Fiber Optic Cables WARNING: Avoid personal injury! Qualified service personnel may only perform the procedures in this document. Wear safety glasses and use extreme caution when handling fiber optic cables, particularly during splicing or terminating operations. The thin glass fiber core at the center of the cable is fragile when exposed by the removal of cladding and buffer material. It easily fragments into glass splinters. 6 Laser Safety, Continued Safe Operation For Software Controlling Optical Transmission Equipment If this document discusses software, the software described is used to monitor and/or control Scientific-Atlanta and other vendors electrical and optical equipment designed to transmit video, voice, or data signals. Certain safety precautions should be observed when operating equipment of this nature. For equipment specific safety requirements, refer to the appropriate section of the equipment documentation. For safe operation of this software, refer to the following warnings. WARNINGS: Ensure that all optical connections are complete or terminated before using this equipment to remotely control a laser device. An optical or laser device can pose a hazard to remotely located personnel when operated without their knowledge. Allow only personnel trained in laser safety to operate this software. Otherwise, injuries to personnel may occur. Restrict access of this software to authorized personnel only. Install this software in equipment that is located in a restricted access area. Laser Safety Information Class 1 Laser Product This laser based multi-mode transceiver is an IEC Amend. 2 Class 1 laser product. It complies with FDA performance standards (21 CFR and ) for laser products except for deviations pursuant to Laser Notice No. 50, dated July 26, Note: All adjustments have been made at the factory prior to shipment of the module. No maintenance or alteration of this device is required. No adjustments or controls provided. 8 Product Descriptions Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit Module Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module includes one 1000 Mbps fiber port (FX), one 10/100/1000 twisted-pair data port (TX Data) and an additional, optional-use 10/100/1000 twisted-pair port (TX EXT MGMT) for isolating management traffic. Twisted-pair ports auto-negotiate or you can manually set for 10, 100, or 1000 Mbps, and Half- or Full-Duplex. The fiber port operates at 1000 Mbps Full-Duplex. The Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module is 802.1Q VLAN compatible, supports a fullrange of VLAN IDs, and offers a 2-tier queue for differential prioritization. The Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module includes LinkLoss and FiberAlert for troubleshooting, loopback testing functionality, bi-directional bandwidth control, and protection against Broadcast storms. Easily configure the SNMP-manageable, Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module with the GUI-based PrismaView software application and iconfig utility. Single-strand fiber versions of the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module allow two wavelengths to share one fiber strand Full-Duplex data travels on different wavelengths (1310 nm and 1550 nm) doubling the capacity of installed fiber. Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit modules install in MediaCenter chassis or MediaCPE chassis. Note: Refer to Application Overview and Application Examples later in this document for information on implementing the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module into your network. 9 Product Descriptions, Continued PrismaView Management Application Software iconfig Utility PrismaView management application software is a network management application for Scientific-Atlanta intelligent networking devices. It features a GUI and gives network managers the ability to monitor and control Scientific-Atlanta products. The application is available in several versions and can also function as a snap-in module for Hewlett Packard s (HP) OpenView Network Node Manager (NNM). Select the right version of PrismaView software for your operating system. Refer to the Help files for the PrismaView software and the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module for information about configuring and managing the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module. iconfig is an in-band configuration utility (in PrismaView software) that allows users to quickly and easily complete the first stages of SNMP configuration for Scientific-Atlanta SNMP-manageable devices. Tasks iconfig can perform include: set the IP address, subnet mask and default gateway define the community strings and SNMP traps In addition to the above functions, iconfig offers an authorized IP address system and access restriction to MIB groups supported by Scientific-Atlanta manageable devices. These extra layers of security are purely optional and do not affect SNMP compatibility in any way. iconfig can also be used to upload new versions of the system software and new MIB information. It also offers diagnostic capabilities for faster resolution of technical support issues. iconfig version 1.4 or above must be used for PROM updates Rev B Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit Module Installation Instructions 9

10 Product Descriptions, Continued iconfig works with the following platforms: Windows 98 Windows NT Windows 2000 Windows XP iconfig is available as a standalone application as well as built in to the Windows version of PrismaView software (Windows 98 users must use the standalone version of iconfig). Both applications are included on the PrismaView CD. For information regarding the use of iconfig, refer to the iconfig Help file. Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit Module Features and Configuration The Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module offers a full feature set including: Auto-Negotiation Selective Advertising FiberAlert LinkLoss AutoCross Read/Write VLANs SNMP Management Bandwidth Control Loopback Testing Some features are hardware configurable only, software configurable only, and configurable via serial port, Telnet session, iconfig, or Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) client. 10 Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit Module Installation Instructions Rev B

11 Hardware Configuration Introduction The following Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module features are hardware configurable only: Selecting management port Host/remote/standalone selection The Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module includes the AutoCross feature, which is hard-coded. AutoCross Feature for Twisted-Pair Connection DIP Switch Settings All twisted-pair ports on the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module include AutoCross, a feature that automatically selects between a crossover workstation or pass-through connection depending on the connected device. Note: A MDI/MDIX button is not required. Before installing the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module, set all features that are hardware configurable. Use the DIP switches, located at position S1 on the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module, for configuration. Refer to Application Overview later in this document for installation examples. When two Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit modules are paired with one another, configure one as a Host unit (set DIP switch 8 to ON) and the other as a Remote (set DIP switch 7 to ON). As a Host, the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module requests management information from an attached remote unit and displays that information, along with its own, upon SNMP query. As a Remote, the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module will respond to requests for management information from an attached unit. For single Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module installations, configure the sole Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module as a Standalone unit (factory default DIP switches 7 and 8 both OFF). 12 Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit Module Installation Instructions Rev B

13 Hardware Configuration, Continued SNMP Management Traffic Although the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module provides a twisted-pair port solely for management traffic, you can configure the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module to accept SNMP management traffic from any of its three ports. More than one port can be used for management, or management can be disabled on all ports, if desired. Set DIP switch 1 to ON to use the TX EXT MGMT port for management. Set DIP switch 2 to ON to use the TX Data port for management. Set DIP switch 3 to ON to use the FX Data port for management. Using the DB-9 Port for Serial Configuration The Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module features a serial port that uses an IBMcompatible DB-9 serial connector. To connect a Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module to your terminal/computer, use a straight-through (pin-to-pin) cable. If your computer/terminal has a serial port using a connection not compatible with a DB-9 COM port, use the pin connection chart for reference in making a cable. Plug one end of the cable into the DB-9 connector on the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module and the other into the appropriate port on your computer/terminal. Set your computer/terminal for VT-100 emulation. 14 Module Installation Instructions Electrostatic Discharge Precautions Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can cause damage to the plug-in Media Converter modules that install into the chassis. Always observe the following precautions when installing or handling an add-in module or any board assembly. 1. Do not remove the module from its protective packaging until you are ready to install it. 2. Wear an ESD wrist grounding strap before handling any module or component. If you do not have a wrist strap, maintain grounded contact with the system unit throughout any procedure requiring ESD protection. WARNING: Integrated circuits and fiber optic components are extremely susceptible to electrostatic discharge damage. Do not handle these components directly unless you are a qualified service technician and use tools and techniques that conform to accepted industry practices. 3. Hold boards by the edges only; do not touch the electronic components or gold connectors. 4. After removal, always place the boards on a grounded, static free surface, ESD pad, or in a proper ESD bag. 15 Module Installation Instructions, Continued Installing the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit Module Follow these steps to install the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module in a Prisma MediaCenter chassis or Prisma MediaCPE chassis. 1. Turn the chassis power switch to OFF and disconnect the chassis from the power source. 2. Remove the blank bracket (if present) covering the slot where the module is to be installed. 3. Slide the module into the chassis using the card guides until the module is seated securely in the connector. 4. Secure the module to the chassis by tightening the captive screw(s). 5. After installing the module, assign the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module an IP address. Refer to Assign IP Information later in this document. 6. Attach the network cables between the module and other devices that will be interconnected. 7. Plug the chassis into a power source and turn the chassis power switch to ON. Notes: The Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module includes on-board SNMP logic. When installed in a Scientific-Atlanta SNMP-manageable chassis, the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module draws power from the chassis only. It is an independently managed module. Since single-strand fiber products use optics that transmit and receive on two different wavelengths, you must deploy single-strand fiber products in pairs, or connect two compatible single-strand fiber products. 16 Fiber Optic Cleaning Guidelines Cleaning Optical Connectors Required Equipment Cleaning fiber-optic connectors can help prevent interconnect problems and therefore aid system performance. When optical connectors are disconnected and reconnected, the fiber surface can become dirty or scratched. The goal of cleaning the fiber optic connectors is to remove all dust and contaminants without leaving any residue. The following equipment is required to clean the ends of fiber-optic connectors. Optical-grade (91%) isopropyl alcohol Lint-free wipes Compressed air (also called canned air ) Tips for Optimal Fiber-Optic Connector Performance Follow these guidelines to ensure optimal connector performance. Connect or disconnect optical connector performance. Always use compressed air before cleaning the fiber-optic connectors. Use end caps on connectors when they are not in use. Always use compressed air to clean the end caps. Use optical-grade isopropyl alcohol of at least 91% or greater. Anything less than 91% isopropyl may leave a film on the fiber surface, creating more problems. Do not contaminate your alcohol supply. Use a sprayer (a fountain pump is also adequate) Do not put used alcohol back into the main container Use only lint-free wipes. Never use Kleenex-type tissues. If you have any degraded signal problems, clean the fiber-optic connector. 16 Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit Module Installation Instructions Rev B

17 Fiber Optic Cleaning Guidelines, Continued Cleaning Optical Connectors Follow these steps to clean an optical connector. 1. Remove loose dirt or dust from the end of the connector by using compressed air (canned air) to blow dirt off the fiber and the connector. 2. Dampen a lint-free wipe with optical-grade (99%) isopropyl alcohol. If no wipes are available, use ferrule cleaner, part number Clean the end of the connector using the lint-free wipe or ferrule cleaner. 4. 18 Assign IP Information Assigning IP Information In order for the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module to allow for SNMP-management, the module must be assigned IP configuration information (e.g., IP address, subnet mask, etc.) using iconfig via PrismaView software, the module s serial port, or DHCP. In addition to assigning an IP address and subnet mask, the former two methods also allows you to create community strings, assign access rights, configure traps, and more. iconfig offers more options than serial port configuration (e.g., you can select which traps to assign with iconfig). After assigning the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module an IP address, you can use PrismaView software or another SNMP-compatible Network Management System (NMS) to remotely configure, monitor, and manage the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module. Note: To access the Remote site s Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module and perform upgrades using iconfig, Telnet, etc., assign the module its own unique IP address. 18 Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit Module Installation Instructions Rev B

19 Software Configuration Introduction Auto-Negotiation The following Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module features are software configurable via PrismaView software only: FX LinkLoss FiberAlert Bandwidth Control Loopback testing functionality The following Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module features are configurable via PrismaView software or serial/telnet session: Auto-Negotiation Selective Advertising Force Mode Flow Control Refer to the Help file for configuration information. Refer to Serial Configuration/Telnet Session later in this document. The Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module ships from the factory with Auto-Negotiation enabled on the twisted-pair ports. In this mode, the ports negotiate for speed and duplex. Auto-Negotiation, Duplex Mode and Speed The twisted-pair ports on the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module auto-negotiate for speed and duplex mode. This device also provides the option of selectively advertising or forcing the speed and duplex mode. The fiber port operates at 1000 Mbps Full-Duplex. Configure features on twisted-pair ports via the management software. Refer to the Help file for configuration information. Forcing the Duplex Mode and Speed The twisted-pair ports on the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module can also be manually set for 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps operation and for Half- or Full-Duplex (i.e. 10 Mbps Full-Duplex, 10 Mbps Half-Duplex, 100 Mbps Full-Duplex, etc.) Rev B Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit Module Installation Instructions 19

20 Software Configuration, Continued Bandwidth Control Loopback Testing Selective Advertising Selective Advertising, when used in combination with Auto-Negotiation, advertises only the configured speed and duplex mode for the twisted-pair port. Note: If a specific speed and/or duplex mode is desired, Scientific-Atlanta recommends using Selective Advertising, rather than Force Mode, when connecting to devices that ONLY auto-negotiate. The Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module includes bi-directional bandwidth control by independently set bandwidth from the TX Data Port to the FX Port and vice versa in single Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module solutions, and from the Host unit to the Remote unit and vice versa in dual Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module applications (i.e., the bandwidth on the TX Data ports on both Host/Remote units is throttled). Increments of bandwidth depend on speed; refer to the chart for granularity. 10 Mbps 4.88 Kbps per sec 100 Mbps 48.8 Kbps per sec 1000 Mbps 244 Kbps per sec For troubleshooting, the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module includes Loopback testing functionality, which loops back all frames arriving on the fiber port (except for the device s management traffic). When in Loopback mode, the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module drops the link on the twisted-pair port. Note: Loopback functionality is not an option for the Host when deploying Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit modules in pairs. 21 Software Configuration, Continued FX LinkLoss and FiberAlert The Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module includes the troubleshooting features FX LinkLoss and FiberAlert. When a fault occurs on the fiber segment of a conversion, FX LinkLoss detects the fault and passes this information to the twisted-pair segment. If a media converter is not receiving a fiber link, FX LinkLoss disables the transmitter on the media converter's twisted-pair port. This results in a loss of link on the remote twisted-pair device. FiberAlert minimizes the problems associated with the loss of one strand of fiber. If a strand is unavailable, the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module notes the loss of link. The device will then stop transmitting data and the link signal until a signal or link pulse is received. The result is that the link LED on BOTH sides of the fiber connection will go out indicating a fault somewhere in the fiber loop. Using FiberAlert, a local site administrator is notified of a fault and can quickly determine the location of a cable fault. Refer to the Help File for configuration information for these features. 22 Serial Configuration/Telnet Session Introduction The following are instructions for serial configuration (including VLAN configuration) and using Telnet sessions and DHCP. Basic Device Configuration Main Configuration Screen After running through an initial self test, the screen displays the following message: Press <Enter> for Device Configuration. Press Enter to go to the Main Configuration screen. Here you will find several displays: Saved Values displays changes made during current session. IP Address (MUST be assigned during initial configuration) Subnet Mask (MUST be assigned during initial configuration) Default Gateway Server IP Addr (TFTP server) New Prom File (firmware file name) Current Values displays values currently in use. From the Main Configuration screen, press I. 2. Enter the IP address for the connected device and press Enter. 3. Enter the subnet mask for the connected device and press Enter. 4. If desired, assign a default gateway OR to skip, press Enter. 5. When finished, press Enter. 6. Type reboot for changes to take effect. Result: The Saved Values and Current Values should now both display the changes made (e.g., new IP address and subnet mask). Creating Community Strings for SNMP The purpose of community strings is to add a level of security to a network. The default community string is named public and has read/write access. Scientific- Atlanta recommends deleting Public, then adding necessary custom communities strings such as one with read-only access (for general use), the other with read/write access (for the administrator). Follow these steps to create a new community string. 1. From the Main Configuration screen, press C. 2. Enter the name of the new community (up to 16 characters, no spaces) and press Enter. 3. Type one of the following to assign the community string s access rights R read-only access W read/write access Enter abort 4. Press Enter. 5. Type reboot for changes to take effect. Result: You will be asked, Are you sure you want to delete all future strings? 2. Press Y to proceed OR press N to abort. 3. Press Enter. Result: This function will delete ALL community strings. If you want to be able to selectively delete community strings, use iconfig to configure your device. Assigning Trap Destinations Traps are sent by the manageable device to a management PC when a certain event takes place. Follow these steps to enter a trap destination. 1. From the Main Configuration screen, press T. Result: You will be asked, Enter a New IP Address. 2. Type the IP address of the destination device and press Enter. 3. Type the name of the community string (that the destination device has been configured to accept) and press Enter. This function enables ALL of the traps the device is capable of. If you want to be able to selectively activate and de-activate traps, use iconfig to configure your device. Supported traps include: Link Down, Link Up, Cold Start, Warm Start, and Authentication Failure. Press Y to continue when asked if you really want to remove all trap destinations OR Press N to abort. 3. Press Enter. Password Protection Passwords are a way to make the management of the Scientific-Atlanta devices secure. It is the responsibility of the network administrator to store and maintain the password lists. If the password(s) are lost, neither the end user nor Scientific-Atlanta has a way to "decode" it. Please refer to the iconfig or HUBCTRL32 Help files, depending on whether the product is current or legacy. Use iconfig to access the back-up copy of the PROM, then reburn the flash PROM. Adding Password Protection Follow these steps to add password protection. 1. From the Main Configuration screen, press P. Result: You will be asked to enter a password. 2. Enter your password (spaces are NOT allowed) and press Enter. Note: Passwords are case sensitive. Result: You will then be asked for your password whenever you log on or off. Removing Password Protection Follow these steps to remove password protection. 1. From the Main Configuration screen, press P. 2. Press Enter. Description There are two levels of cleandb: The first level resets the Telnet/iConfig password and all SNMP database values. The second level resets the aforementioned plus: IP address, IP Subnet, Gateway, VLAN settings, CLI command settings, serial port password and security settings. download ifstats rmstats version reboot security port Downloads firmware from central server via TFTP protocol. Displays Ethernet statistics. Displays RMON statistics. Displays the serial number and build date. Reboots the unit. Allows ARP request configuration. Displays port status values and allows some configuration. See Port Configuration later in this document. config accounts Allows VLAN configuration (See VLAN and Transparency Mode Configuration later in this document.) Allows addition/deletion of Username/Password accounts. Administrators must maintain a password list. 1. From the Command List section of the Main Configuration screen (serial configuration/telnet session), press the Space Bar. 2. Type port and press Enter to go to the Port Status/Control screen. In this screen you can view the port speed, duplex and link status, as well as what the device advertises. Note: If logged-in as a User in a Telnet session, you can view status/settings but not change settings. Under Port Control Settings, this screen contains the following: Option Port Enable Admin Status Enables/Disables the port. Enables/Disables the port. Description Note: Enable BOTH Port Enable and Admin Status to enable port. Port Speed Ctrl Sets the port for Auto-Negotiation or force the speed (Force Mode) to 10 Mbps Half-Duplex; 10Mbps Full-Duplex; 100 Mbps Half-Duplex, or 100 Mbps Full-Duplex. 28 Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit Module Installation Instructions Rev B

29 Serial Configuration/Telnet Session, Continued Option Advertise Ctrl Advertise FlowC and Force FlowCtrl Unit FlowControl Description This is the Selective Advertising feature. Selective Advertising, when used in combination with Auto- Negotiation, advertises only the configured speed and duplex mode for twisted-pair ports. You must enable Auto- Negotiation to use Selective Advertising. Advertises: all speeds and duplex modes; 10 Mbps Half-Duplex; 10 Mbps Full-Duplex; 100 Mbps Half-Duplex; 100 Mbps Full-Duplex; 10 Mbps Half- and Full-Duplex; or 1000 Mbps Full-Duplex, etc. Note: If a specific speed and/or duplex mode are desired, it is recommended that you use Selective Advertising, rather than Force Mode, when connecting to devices that ONLY auto-negotiate. This is the Flow Control feature. If using Flow Control functionality on any port, you must enable Global Flow Control (see below, Unit FlowControl). Then configure each port individually. If using Auto-Negotiation and Flow Control: set Advertise FlowC to Advertise Flow and set Force FlowCtrl to Flow Auto. If using Auto-Negotiation but you do not want to use Flow Control on a given port, set Advertise FlowC to No Flow. If using Flow Control and Force Mode (see above) on a given port, set Advertise FlowC to Advertise Flow and set Force FlowCtrl to Frc FlowCt. Enables/disables Flow Control functionality on the unit. You must enable this to use Flow Control on any port. Note: All ports feature Flow Control in FDX and Back Pressure Flow control in HDX except the TX EXT MGMT port does not include Back Pressure Flow Control in HDX (because this port also functions as a serial port) Rev B Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit Module Installation Instructions 29

30 Serial Configuration/Telnet Session, Continued Downloading Files VLAN Configuration The Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module allows you to download firmware from a central server via TFTP protocol. This download can be initiated via serial configuration or Telnet session. Make sure the IP address and the name of the file you wish to download are correct in the Current Values section of the Main Configuration screen. If this information is not correct, make the appropriate changes. Refer to Assigning TCP/IP Information earlier in this document. Follow these steps to download a file. 1. From the Command List section of the Main Configuration screen (serial configuration), press the Space Bar. 2. Type download and press Enter to go to the Download a File screen. Result: The Download a File screen appears. This screen displays the IP Address of the TFTP server and the name of the file you wish to download. 3. Press Enter to start downloading the file. The Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module includes three general modes for VLAN tagged and untagged traffic: Transparency Mode Enabled passes VLAN tagged and untagged traffic Transparency Mode Disabled passes VLAN tagged traffic with the VLAN IDs you define Default/Not Using VLANs passes only untagged traffic (you do not have to configure anything in the VLAN Configuration screen) Follow these steps to begin VLAN configuration. 1. From the Command List section of the Main Configuration screen (serial configuration/telnet session), press the Space Bar. 2. Type config and press Enter. 31 Serial Configuration/Telnet Session, Continued Enabling/Disabling Transparency Mode It is recommended that you use Transparency Mode when you require more than 32 VLAN IDs and/or when you will have a mixture of Tagged VLAN and Untagged traffic. Type Y and press Enter to enable Transparency. Type N and press Enter to disable Transparency. 32 Serial Configuration/Telnet Session, Continued Is a VLAN tag required on Management packets? This refers only to management from the TX and/or FX Data ports. If you say Yes, the device will ask you to enter a VLAN ID. Configure both units in your Host/Remote application the SAME. Are VLAN IDs required on the EXT port? You must answer Yes to the first question in order to answer Yes to the second question. You can configure this question differently on each unit. Note: If only using the EXT port(s) for management, answer Yes to questions 1 and 2, then disable management on the Data ports by setting DIP switches 2 and 3 to OFF. Transparency Disabled If you disable Transparency Mode, then you will receive the following screen and can assign up to 32 VLAN IDs. You can configure all ports on the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module to accept/transmit VLAN-tagged packets. To enable VLAN functionality on the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module, there must be a Y (Yes) under Tags for either the TX Data port or the FX port (or both); if there is an N for BOTH the TX Data and FX ports, VLAN functionality is disabled. Valid VLAN IDs are 1 to 4,094. You can also set a Priority for port and SNMP VLAN traffic (see Priorities/Base VLAN Priority section later in this document). 32 Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit Module Installation Instructions Rev B

33 Serial Configuration/Telnet Session, Continued If you enable a port for Tags (Tagged Port), it will only accept and transmit VLANtagged packets. If a port is NOT enabled for Tags (Untagged Port), it will only accept and transmit untagged packets. Ports/Data VLANs Type Y (Yes) under Tags for the FX port AND/OR the TX Data port. If you enable Tags on ONE of the above-mentioned ports (FX or TX Data), assign a VLAN ID and Priority to the other port in the Ports section. Note: When a tagged packet arrives on the Tagged Port, the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module forwards the packet to the Untagged Port only if the VLAN ID in the tag matches the VLAN ID defined for the Untagged Port. If an untagged packet is received on the Untagged Port, the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module adds a tag with the specified VLAN ID to the packet before forwarding it to the Tagged port. If you enable Tags on BOTH the TX Data port and the FX port, assign up to 32 VLAN IDs in the Data VLANs section (rather than one in the Ports section). Management VLANS SNMP When using VLAN functionality, always define an SNMP VLAN ID and Priority if management is enabled on any port configured for VLAN-tagged traffic. Also in this section, you can configure the TX EXT MGMT port to accept/pass VLANtagged packets by typing Y under EXT Tag. Priorities/Base VLAN Priority The Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module has two outgoing queues; one for highpriority traffic and one for low-priority traffic. Use the PrismaView software to set a Base VLAN Priority to designate what will be high priority and low priority. If the Base VLAN Priority is 4, 0-3 are low priority and 4-7 are high priority. If you change the Base VLAN Priority to 3, 0-2 are low priority and 3-7 are high priority. In the VLAN Configuration screen (shown previously), enter a Priority (0-7) for each port and SNMP, if desired Rev B Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit Module Installation Instructions 33

34 Serial Configuration/Telnet Session, Continued Telnet DHCP Assign the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module an IP address BEFORE using a Telnet session (refer to Assigning IP Information earlier in this document). All configurations that can be done via the serial port can also be performed using Telnet. Note: Use only one Telnet session at a time. Do not use an RS-232 serial session and a Telnet session at the same time. There are three levels of Telnet account access: User: Can only see status, change own password, reboot Operator: Can change settings Administrator: Can add/delete accounts, cleandb Note: The serial port is always at the Administrator level. There is a Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) client in the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module. By default, the DHCP client is disabled. If a DHCP server is present on the network, the DHCP client will initiate a dialogue with the server during the boot up sequence. The server will then issue an IP address, default gateway, and subnet mask to the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module. Once the new IP address is received, the Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit module will reboot so that the new IP address will take effect. Refer to Basic Device Configuration earlier in this document. If there is no DHCP server on the network, make sure that DHCP is disabled and use iconfig or serial configuration to manually set the IP addresses. DHCP servers give out lease times; devices renew their leases based on the administrator-specified time. If a device cannot renew its lease, and the lease expires, the device is given the IP address and reboots. If an IP address is already assigned to the device, and DHCP is then enabled, that original IP address is saved. When DHCP is disabled, the saved IP address is reinstated and the device reboots. 34 Prisma FiberLinX Gigabit Module Installation Instructions Rev B

40 Application Examples Introduction The following are application examples for both VLAN and non-vlan environments. These are only examples and other implementations are possible. If you require assistance configuring an application, contact Scientific-Atlanta technical support. There are three general types of installations: Transparency Mode (enabled) with untagged and tagged packets; VLAN IDs are not defined; Non-VLAN environment with only untagged packets; VLAN environment using ONLY defined VLAN IDs; Transparency Mode disabled. Note: When configuring VLAN IDs, remember that you can use any between 1 and 4,094. The VLAN IDs used in the following applications are for example purposes ONLY. Host/Remote Application Transparency Mode Enabled In Host/Remote applications when using management on the TX EXT MGT port and the FX Data port (management disabled on TX Data port) and you enable Transparency Mode, both tagged and untagged traffic passes. Although you do not have to define any VLAN IDs, Scientific-Atlanta recommends settings a specific VLAN ID for SNMP management.
