LINK Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge Installation and User Guide (06/95) 2.2 Product Description The Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge is an easy to install, cost-effective miniature local bridge that can be configured to directly support any combination of standard Ethernet media. Each Workgroup Bridge is a complete plug and play operational unit enclosed in a lightweight, compact, rugged metal enclosure. Each unit comes with an external power supply. The Workgroup Bridge is easily installed into an existing network and is suitable for wiring closet shelf, table-top or vertical mounting. Magnum 30Xs are ideally suited for workgroups which have their own local server, and have become congested due to heavy local traffic combined with excess outside network traffic. In this environment, the 30X can bridge-isolate the workgroup and local servers from the rest of the network since traffic is typically between the workgroup users and their servers Magnum 30X Chassis The Magnum 30X chassis houses the main repeater circuit board, one Bridge Port Module, and one Repeater Port Module. The main repeater board is used to power the two PM cards and as a connection plane between the cards. The RPM port simply behaves as a repeater port, and relays all packets in both directions. The BPM gives the 30X its bridge functionality by making a filter/forward decision on each packet based on the contents of its address table (see section 4.1 for more details). The top side of the chassis has one DC power jack for the included external power supply, and one GREEN power (PWR) LED, which is illuminated when DC power is present. - + PWR Magnum 30X Each PM is equipped with a Workgroup Bridge media interface connector that can be selected to suit at the time of order. FWD FWD X I Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge The Port Modules are located at the ends of the 30X, with the RPM usually located on the right end of the unit, and the BPM on the left. For clarity, the ends of the 30X unit are labeled Workgroup port (RPM) on the right and Upstream port (BPM) on the left. Since the unit is directional, it is important to orient and connect the ports properly during installation (see Section 3.1.3) to achieve best results. 6
The external power supply is one of two types; one version for AC power input of 115 vac 60 Hz, and one version for 230 vac 50 Hz. The 115 vac version has a small transformer integral with a convenience power outlet plug. The 230 vac version has a small transformer integral with an IEC-type power plug for a user supplied AC power cord with a convenience power outlet plug. Both types also include a lightweight DC power cord for connection to the power jack on the Magnum 30X. For maximum Ethernet media flexibility, the Magnum 30X may be configured with any one of six RPMs and any one of four BPMs. 2.3 Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge - Repeater Port Modules (RPMs) There are a total of six different RPM cards and each is designed with its own media cable connector type. The assortment of standard network connector types for RPMs includes BNC (ThinNet or 10BASE2), AUI (10BASE5 or ThickNet, DB-15 female for most transceiver connections), DTE (DB-15 male-aui for direct connects), ST (Ethernet multi-mode Fiber ST), SMF (Ethernet single-mode Fiber), and RJ-45 (10BASE-T UTP and STP). They are shown in the Figure below. Each RPM is usually factory installed, or may be field installed by trained technicians as described in Section 3.0, Installation. Magnum RPM Cards: RPM-BNC, RPM-AUI, RPM-DTE, RPM-FST, RPM-SMF, RPM-TP Each of the individual RPMs are described in detail in the following sections. 7
2.3.1 RPM-TP (Twisted Pair) The Magnum RPM-TP card supports Ethernet twisted pair segments of any standard length. It is equipped with a single RJ-45 connector. The RJ-45 connector is shielded to minimize emissions and will allow both unshielded twisted pair (UTP) and shielded twisted pair (STP) segment connections. The RPM-TP module is MDI-X also equipped with a slide switch to Cross-Over Slide Switch allow for cascaded or up-link connections. This feature eliminates 1 the need for a special twisted pair crossover cable. With the switch in 3 the UP (or LEFT) position, the RPM-TP port is used for up-link connections (i.e., a connection to Magnum RPM-TP Shielded RJ-45 Connector 1 LINK 2 Partition 3 Receive another repeater or hub typically.) When used for segments going to workstations and other user device connections, the switch should be in the DOWN (or RIGHT) position. The LINK LED is particularly useful in choosing the proper position for the up-link switch. If the LINK LED is illuminated, the switch is set properly! If not, change the switch setting. The RPM-TP will support 10BASE-T unshielded twisted pair wiring (UTP) environments with maximum segment distances up to 100m (325 ft.), or shielded twisted pair wiring (STP) of 150m (500 ft.). This module is designed with internal transceiver functionality. In addition to PART and RX (same as RPM-BNC, Section 2.3.1), the RPM-TP has a LINK LED to indicate proper connectivity with the remote device. 2 Important Note: For the RPM-TP MDI-X Crossover Switch - DOWN(or Right) for workstations and user connections. UP (or Left) for Up-Link connections to other hubs, etc. The RJ-45 pins normally (TP crossover switch DOWN or RIGHT) are per the standard for hubto-user twisted pair wiring: 1 = receive+, 2 = receive-, 3 = transmit+, 6 = transmit-, other pins not used. When the TP crossover switch is UP or LEFT, the pins of the RJ-45 port are per the standard for up-links using twisted pair wiring, i.e., the transmit and the receive pairs are exchanged: 1 = transmit+, 2 = transmit-, 3 = receive+, 6 = receive-, other pins not used. 8
2.3.2 RPM-BNC Internal Termination Standard BNC The Magnum RPM- 10BASE2 Connector Slide Switch BNC repeater module is equipped with a standard 10BASE2 coax 1 Partition LED connector. This RPM performs 2 Receive LED full IEEE repeater 1 2 functionality and is used for 10BASE2 ThinNet (commonly referred to as BNC) connections. Magnum RPM-BNC The RPM-BNC module is designed with a special switch -selectable internal termination function that eliminates the need for a "tee" connector and a 50 ohm terminator. To take advantage of internal termination, the slide switch should be in the "DOWN" (or rightside) position. In this configuration, the 10BASE2 segment is directly attached to the BNC port where it is internally terminated. When the switch is in the "UP" (or left-side) position, the BNC port requires a "tee" connector (not supplied) and a 50 ohm terminator for proper termination. Certain applications may require a "tee" connector, used as a tap, to allow the 10BASE2 coax segment to continue on past the RPM-BNC connection. The RPM-BNC module includes one partition (PART) and one receive (RX) LED, which are visible from the front. The PART LED flashes AMBER to indicate that the segment has been automatically partitioned. As soon as normal transmission resumes, the segment will be automatically re-established. The RX LED illuminates GREEN intermittently to indicate data is being received. Important Note: For the RPM-BNC Termination Switch - DOWN (or right): Internally Terminated UP (or left): Requires "T" Connector RPM-AUI This module is equipped with a 15 pin female AUI connector and a slidelock, and performs full IEEE repeater functionality. It is used to provide connectivity with a 10BASE5 (ThickNet) backbone or to any AUI Standard 15-pin female AUI, 1 Partition LED with slide-lock 2 Receive LED 2 1 Magnum RPM-AUI 9
segments. A transceiver is required when connecting to a ThickNet segment and the RPM-AUI supports this convention. The RPM-AUI is also a "universal" Ethernet media interface as it may be used with a variety of mini-transceivers to provide connectivity to any media type. The RPM-AUI card is equipped with Partition (PART) and Receive (RX) LEDs which function the same as the identical LEDs on the RPM-BNC (Section above). The Magnum RPM-AUI card is also used for connecting Ethernet devices using standard AUI cabling. In this situation, it is important to consider the AUI segment length or distance to the attached device. The maximum transmission distance between a backbone transceiver equipped with an AUI connector and the Magnum RPM-AUI card will vary. When an AUI cable is used to connect the Magnum RPM-AUI directly to a backbone transceiver, the maximum AUI segment length is allowed. If the Magnum RPM-AUI is connected to a transceiver that has been cascaded from another transceiver, the maximum AUI segment length is reduced. According to Ethernet standards, the maximum distance from the transceiver AUI connector and the attached device (Magnum RPM-AUI) is 50m (165 ft.). The AUI segment maximum length is reduced in cascaded configurations. See the following note. Important Note: The maximum transmission distance is decreased by 6m (20 ft.) for every additional level of network transceiver device "dropped" or "cascaded" from the original backbone transceiver tap. The RPM-AUI connector supports standard IEEE signals, summarized in Table Table 2.3.3: AUI Pin Assignments Pin Function Pin Function 1 Control In Circuit Shield 10 Data Out Circuit B 2 Control In Circuit A 11 Data Out Circuit Shield 3 Data Out Circuit A 12 Data In Circuit B 4 Data In Circuit Shield 13 Voltage Plus (+) 5 Data In Circuit A 14 Voltage Shield 6 Voltage Common 15 Control Out Circuit B 7 Control Out Circuit A SHELL Protective Ground 8 Control Out Circuit Shield (conductive shell) 9 Control In Circuit B NOTES: 1) Voltage Plus (pin #13) and Voltage Common (pin # 6) use a single twisted pair in the AUI cable. 2) Pins 4, 8, 11 and 14 may be connected to pin # RPM-FST (Fiber ST, Twist-lock Connector) 10
The Magnum RPM-FST is a multi-mode fiber optic module equipped with a dual ST-type connector. It functions as an IEEE full repeater to support 10BASE-FL and FOIRL network segments. When used for 10BASE-FL segments, this module supports fiber optic transmission distances up to 2000m. For FOIRL applications, it supports fiber segments of up to 1000m in length. The RPM-FST includes full Magnum RPM-FST transceiver functionality and does not require an external transceiver device. In addition to Partition (PART) and Receive (RX) LEDs, a LINK LED indicates proper connectivity with the remote device BASE-FL, FOIRL ST Connectors 1 LINK 2 Partition 3 Receive RPM-FSM (Fiber SMA, Screw-on Connector) The Magnum RPM-FSM is also a multi-mode fiber optic repeater module. Its functionality is like the RPM-FST (Section 2.2.4), but it is equipped with an SMA-type "screw-on" connector instead of an ST-type "twist-lock" connector. The SMA-type fiber is uncommon and the RPM-FSM is only available by special order. 10BASE-FL, FOIRL SMA Connectors 2 Magnum RPM-FSM 1 1 LINK Partition Receive 11
2.3.6 RPM-SMF (Single-mode Fiber) The Magnum RPM-SMF is a single-mode fiber optic module equipped with a dual ST-type connector. It functions as a full repeater to support single-mode fiber networks. The RPM-SMF supports fiber optic transmission Single-mode ST Connectors distances of up to 10 Km. The RPM-SMF includes full transceiver functionality and does not require an external transceiver device. This module is equipped with PART, RX, and LINK LEDs identical to those of the RPM-FST (Section 2.3.4). Magnum RPM-SMF Note: Be sure to use single-mode fiber optic cable with this module. Single-mode fiber has a smaller diameter than multi-mode fiber (2/15-8/60 microns for single-mode, 50/125 or 62.5/125 microns for multi-mode, where xx/xx are the diameters of the core and the core plus the cladding respectively) LINK 2 Partition 3 Receive RPM-DTE The Magnum RPM-DTE is a module equipped with a 15-pin male DTE connector with lock posts. (The RPM-DTE is a mating connector for the RPM-AUI which has a 15-pin female connector and slide locks. The pin assignments of the two are the same). The 1 2 Partition LED Receive LED Magnum RPM-DTE RPM-DTE card is designed to support direct connections (no transceiver required) using AUI drop cables to any device that is equipped with an AUI port. Examples of such devices include servers, routers, bridges, hubs, and UNIX workstations. 1 Standard 15-pin male "AUI" 2 12
2.4 Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge - Bridge Port Modules (BPMs) There are four different BPM cards, each designed with its own media connector type. BPMs are available for the following Ethernet media types: RJ-45 (10BASE-T UTP and STP), BNC (ThinNet or 10BASE2), AUI (10BASE5 or ThickNet, DB-15 female for most transceiver connections), and ST (Ethernet multi-mode Fiber ST). They are shown in Figure 2.4. Each BPM is usually factory installed, but may be field replaced by trained technicians as described in Section 3.0, Installation. Figure 2.4: Magnum BPM Cards: BPM-TP, BPM-BNC, BPM-ST, BPM-AUI Each of the individual BPMs are described in detail in this section BPM-TP The Magnum BPM-TP card is equipped with a single RJ-45 connector and supports Ethernet twisted pair segments of any standard length. The RJ-45 connector is shielded to minimize emissions and will allow both unshielded twisted pair (UTP) and shielded twisted pair (STP) segment connections. MDI-X Cross-over Slide Switch Shielded RJ-45 Connector Magnum BPM-TP FWD-X LED FWD-I LED LINK LED The BPM-TP module is also equipped with a Media Dependent Interface-Crossover (MDI-X) slide switch to allow for cascaded connections. This feature eliminates the need for a special twisted pair crossover cable. For MDI-X switch details, refer to the RPM-TP section, The BPM-TP will support 10BASE-T unshielded twisted pair wiring (UTP) environments with maximum segment distances up to 100m (325 ft.), or shielded twisted pair wiring (STP) of 150m (500 ft.). This module is designed with internal transceiver functionality. The BPM-TP is equipped with three LEDs: FWD-I, FWD-X and LINK. The FWD-I LED 13
blinks GREEN to indicate that packets are being forwarded INTO the local segment connected to the Magnum 30X. The FWD-X blinks GREEN to indicate that packets are being forwarded OUT of the Magnum 30X to the upstream network. The LINK LED illuminates GREEN to indicate an operational segment link BPM-BNC The Magnum BPM-BNC bridge module is equipped with a standard 10BASE2 coax connector. This BPM is self-learning and filters and forwards packets at full Ethernet wire speed. This module is used for 10BASE2 ThinNet (commonly referred to as BNC) connections and is designed to isolate the local segment (i.e., the users and devices connected to the Magnum unit housing the BPM) from the Internal Termination Standard BNC connecting network (i.e., the users and Slide Switch 10BASE2 Connector devices connected through the BPM s media connector). The BPM-BNC module is designed with a special switch -selectable internal termination function that eliminates the need for a "tee" connector and a 50 ohm terminator. For switch details, refer to Magnum BPM-BNC the RPM-BNC section, The BPM-BNC module includes a FWD-I LED and a FWD-X LED, which are identical to those of the BPM-TP (Section 2.4.1) FWD-X LED FWD-I LED BPM-AUI Standard 15-pin female AUI with slide-lock This local-bridge module is equipped 1 2 with a 15 pin female AUI connector and a slidelock. 21 2.5 Features and Benefits! Instantly Frees up Network Bandwidth for Increased Performance Once installed, the Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge frees up bandwidth in the workgroup by filtering out unneeded central network traffic, preventing it from causing congestion within the workgroup network segment. The performance impact on the network is the same as using a two-port switching hub.! Plug and Play Installation and Operation The Workgroup Bridge learns the network addresses of the local workgroup network devices from the packets in the traffic, so there is no software set-up required. As users or servers are added or changed, the unit learns the new network addresses and adapts automatically.! Operation is Transparent to Software The Magnum 30X operates as a transparent bridge, only forwarding packets that are not needed on the workgroup segment. Its operation will not affect any standard software applications or SNMP network management platforms.! Convenient Compact Enclosure Allows for Versatile Installation The compact physical size of the Magnum 30X allows it to be installed in virtually any location within reach of a standard AC wall outlet.! Portable Design Makes Hotspot Analysis Easy The portable design of the Workgroup Bridge allows LAN managers to test for network hotspots and relocate the unit as traffic patterns change. By inserting the Workgroup Bridge into an existing network segment, temporary traffic bottlenecks can be alleviated with ease.! PMs (Port Modules) for All Standard Ethernet Media Models are available for any network media type. PMs support all of the various IEEE standards including, 10BASE-FL, FOIRL, 10BASE2, 10BASE5 and 10BASE-T. To make effective use of the Workgroup Bridge, it is important to install the bridge in an environment well suited for such an application. In order for the Magnum 30X to produce the desired throughput increase, the segmented workgroup should have local servers and printers that are used by the users in the workgroup, which create local traffic. A segmented workgroup without its own server may not be well suited for a Workgroup Bridge, as all traffic between workgroup nodes and the server will pass through the bridge, yielding a high forwarding percentage and little benefit. A poorly placed bridge produces very little performance increase for the segmented workgroup. The following example illustrates a workgroup that benefits from the installation of a Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge. This configuration is typical of departmental workgroups; it has its own server and printer, and most communication is among user nodes and the server. Although the workgroup is fairly self-sufficient, it has been slowed down by unnecessary traffic from the rest of the network. By simply placing a Workgroup Bridge in the workgroup s up-link connection, local traffic is reduced, and workgroup bandwidth is increased. The above example showed how the Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge can easily Central Network 17 Workgroup Bridge Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge Fiber Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge Central Network IR B1 IRB2 Stack E nable OFF ON Server Server Based Workgroup 10BASE-T Magnum ST80 Stackable Personal Hub Server Bridge-Isolation of a Cascaded Workgroup Server Based Workgroup Workgroup Bridge-Isolation, Stacked Hubs

With other standard Ethernet media, the installation procedure is just as simple, and does not require transceivers. It is even possible to easily bridge two segments of different Ethernet media types. Consider the BNC Network ThinNet (BNC) network Central Network shown in the figure. This Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge network consists of several workgroups tied together by a central BNC Server Server backbone. As in the Server Based Workgroup previous example, most of Server the workgroups have their Workgroup Bridge-Isolation on ThinNet Network own server, and communicate mostly among themselves. In this example, the two workgroups at the left end of the backbone communicate quite frequently with other. In order to increase their local bandwidth, a Workgroup Bridge is inserted in-line into the backbone. The installation is quick and simple, and no tee connectors were required due to the internal termination switches on each of the Magnum 30X ports (refer to Section 2.3.1, RPM-BNC) Magnum ST80 Stackable Personal Hub As shown if the final figure, not all workgroups are Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge small, and some workgroups Central Network are managed by SNMP and Managed Stack other network management protocols. The Magnum 30X... Workgroup Bridge was Managed Stack Server designed with these considerations in mind. The Server Magnum 30X can store up to 256 network addresses in its Server Bridge-Isolation of a Large, Managed Workgroup address table. This means that bridge-isolated workgroups can have up to 256 attached nodes (refer to Section 4.1, Bridge Functionality, for more details). In addition, the Workgroup Bridge is transparent to all software, including SNMP and network management systems. Workgroup Bridge Workgroup Bridge LINK FWD FWD Stack Enable OFF ON IRB1 IRB 2 18
- + L IN K FWD X FWD I Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge Installation and User Guide (06/95) 3.0 INSTALLATION This chapter provides instructions for installing the Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge and each of the available Port Modules (PMs). 3.1 Locating the Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge The location of the Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge is dependent on the physical layout of the network and the workgroup to be bridge-isolated. The compact size of the unit allows it to be either shelf of wall-mounted. Locate an AC receptacle that is within six feet (2 meters) of the intended Magnum 30X site. The rugged metal case of the Magnum 30X will normally protect it from accidental damage in a lab or workplace setting. Keep an open area around the unit so that convection cooling can occur while the unit is in operation Table-Top or Shelf Mounting The Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge can be easily mounted on a table-top or any suitable horizontal surface, and have four rubber feet to provide stability without scratching finished surfaces Wall (or Vertical Surface) Mounting - + PWR [12VDC, 1A] Each Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge Magnum 30X is shipped with two mounting brackets (and Workgroup Bridge screws), to allow the unit to be mounted in nearly any desired orientation or position. The brackets are attached to the units case using one of the metal screws for each bracket. It is Top View - Magnum 30X With recommended that the brackets be attached to Mounting Brackets two opposite corners on the unit. The PWR [12VDC, 1A] Magnum 30X brackets should be attached to the Magnum Workgroup Bridge 30X through the round hole of the bracket. When properly attached, the brackets will extend slightly below the base of the unit to allow clearance for the rubber feet. Proper Installation of Mounting Bracket 19
As an alternative, a piece of Velcro mounting tape is supplied with each Magnum 30X, and may be used to mount the unit on a desired smooth vertical surface. Stick one side of the Velcro to the bottom of the Workgroup Bridge between the rubber feet. Stick the other side of the Velcro to the desired smooth vertical surface. This permits the Workgroup Bridge to be mounted on a filing cabinet, file server, or a similar location where it is not convenient to mount it with brackets and screws Directionality of the Workgroup Bridge Unlike a repeater, the Workgroup Bridge is a uni-directional device. As a result, attention must be given when inserting the unit into a network segment. The function of the internal BPM of the Magnum 30X is to keep unneeded traffic off of the workgroup segment. In order to function properly, the 30X must be oriented so that the BPM port is connected to the upstream network, and the RPM port is connected to workgroup segment. When factory configured, the BPM port is on the left end of the 30X unit, and the RPM unit is on the right end. To ease installation, the left end of the unit is labeled Upstream port (BPM), and the right end is labeled Workgroup port (RPM). It is possible, however, for the location of the BPM and RPM to be reversed. This may occur, for instance, if the 30X has been reconfigured in the field. To verify that the port labels are correct, check the LEDs. A BPM will have LEDs labeled X FWD and I FWD to monitor the operation of the internal bridge (see Section 2.4). An RPM will not have FWD LEDs but will have other types (see Section 2.3) For more details on the internal operation of the Magnum 30X and the significance of the correct directional connection for proper operation, see Section 4.1, Functionality. 26 3.1.4 Installation Notes for the Magnum 30X-AA and 30X-AF Installation of the Magnum 30X-AA and 30X-AF requires two additional considerations which are not applicable to other models of the Workgroup Bridge. 1. The AUI ports of the Magnum 30X-AA and 30X-AF can be used as configurable media ports because mini-transceivers can be attached to them. Each port can supply power to an attached mini-transceiver, so any standard mini-transceiver may be used to connect its media type. The media flexibility of a 30X with AUI ports may be useful if it is to be frequently moved and or is subject to being used with different media types. 2. When connecting the AUI ports to AUI cable, note that all 30X AUI connectors are female (with slide locks). This allows direct connection of an AUI drop cable with a male connector. Be sure the AUI cables used have a 15 pin male connector on the ends to be connected to 30X ports. 3.2 Connecting Ethernet Media The Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge can be configured to meet any Ethernet media requirements. This is accomplished by using a family of Port Modules (PMs). The various media types supported along with the corresponding IEEE standards and connector types are as follows: Media IEEE Standard Connector PM type ThinNet 10BASE2 BNC RPM-BNC, BPM-BNC ThickNet 10BASE5 AUI (female) RPM-AUI, BPM-AUI Drop Cable 10BASE5 DTE (male) RPM-DTE Twisted Pair 10BASE-T RJ-45 RPM-TP, BPM-TP Fiber (mm 1 ) FOIRL ST or SMA RPM-FST, RPM-FSM, BPM-FST Fiber (mm 1 ) 10BASE-FL ST or SMA RPM-FST, RPM-FSM, BPM-FST Fiber (sgl.m 2 ) * ST RPM-SMF 1 mm = multi-mode 2 sgl.m = single-mode * not currently standardized by IEEE 21
3.2.1 Connecting Twisted Pair (RJ-45, Unshielded or Shielded) The following procedure describes how to connect a 10BASE-T twisted pair segment to the RJ-45 port on the RPM-TP or BPM-TP. The procedure is the same for both unshielded and shielded twisted pair segments. 1. Using standard 10BASE-T media, insert either end of the cable with an RJ-45 plug into the RJ-45 connector of the PM-TP. Note that, even though the PM-TP connector is shielded, either unshielded or shielded 10BASE-T cables and wiring may be used. 2. Connect the other end of the cable to the corresponding device. 3. Use the LINK LED to ensure proper connectivity by noting that the LED will be illuminated when the unit is powered and proper connection is established. If the LINK LED is not illuminated, change the setting of the up-link switch. If this does not help, ensure that the cable is connected properly and is not defective. The Magnum PM-TP is equipped with a up-link slide switch to accommodate repeater-to-repeater connections without special cross-over connectors. NOTE: When installing a Magnum 30X-TT Workgroup Bridge, the up-link switches of both connectors should have the same setting ( both left or both right). When installing a Magnum 30X-TF, you will normally set the up-link switch to the DOWN (or RIGHT) position, however this is dependent on your network configuration (see step 3 above) Connecting ThinNet 10BASE2 (BNC) Connect the ThinNet coax cable to the BNC connector on the Magnum RPM-BNC or BPM-BNC card in the same manner as is done for any standard BNC connection. The PM- BNC port is specially equipped with an internal termination switch on the front of the card (see Section 4.1 for a description of this switch). This eliminates the need to use a "tee" connector when the BNC cable is ending at the connection to this PM. Some applications may require a "tee" connector, used as a tap, to allow the 10BASE2 coax segment to continue on past the PM- BNC connection. 22
3.2.3 Connecting ThickNet 10BASE5 (AUI) Using the steps below as a guide, attach a new or existing 10BASE5 ThickNet dropcable directly to the AUI connector on the RPM-AUI or BPM-AUI port. 1. Plug the male end of the cable into the female AUI connector on the PM-AUI card. 2. Engage the AUI connector slide lock to insure maximum connectivity. 3. Connect the opposite end of the cable into a network AUI port. (This could be a network backbone transceiver, a hub or fan-out with an AUI backbone port, or an AUI module in a concentrator.) The Magnum PM-AUI card may also used for connecting to other Ethernet devices using standard AUI cabling. In this type of situation, it is important to consider the AUI segment length to the attached device, including any cascading. (See Chapter 2 for detailed information on the PM-AUI card, connector pins, and cable lengths.) Connecting Drop Cable 10BASE5 (DTE) Using the steps below as a guide, attach the 10BASE5 drop-cable directly to the DTE connector on the RPM-DTE port. 1. Plug the female end of the cable into the male DTE connector on the RPM-DTE card. 2. Engage the AUI connector slide lock (on the cable) to insure maximum connectivity. 3. Connect the opposite end of the cable into a network AUI port. (This could be a server, router, bridge, hub, or UNIX workstation.) Connecting Fiber Optic 10BASE-FL and FOIRL (ST-type, Twist-Lock") The following procedure applies to FOIRL and 10BASE-FL applications using an RPM-ST or BPM-ST card with ST-type fiber connectors. (The primary difference between FOIRL and 10BASE-FL for users is the maximum distance allowed. 10BASE-FL is used for a fiber segment length of up to 2000m, while FOIRL is used for fiber segments of up to 1000m in length.) 1. Before connecting the fiber optic cable, remove the protective dust caps from the tips of the connectors on the PM-ST. Save these dust caps for future use. 2. Wipe clean the ends of the dual connectors with a soft cloth or lint-free lens tissue dampened in alcohol. Make certain the connectors are clean before connecting. Note: One strand of the duplex fiber optic cable is coded using color bands at regular intervals; you must use the color-coded strand on the associated ports at each end of the fiber optic segment. 23
3. Connect the Transmit (TX) port (light colored post) on the Magnum PM-FST to the Receive (RX) port of the remote device. Begin with the color-coded strand of the cable for this first TX-to-RX connection. 4. Connect the Receive (RX) port (dark colored post) on the PM-FST to the Transmit (TX) port of the remote device. Use the non-color coded fiber strand for this. 5. The LINK LED on the front of the PM-FST will illuminate when a proper connection has been established at both ends (and when power is ON in the unit). If LINK is not lit after cable connection, the normal cause is improper cable polarity. Swap the fiber cables at the Port Module connector to remedy this situation Connecting Fiber Optic (SMA-type, "Screw-on")* The same five-step procedure as for fiber ST-type applies to FOIRL and 10BASE-FL applications using an RPM-FSM card used with SMA-type fiber connectors. Follow the five steps as described in the paragraph above. When connecting fiber media to SMA connectors, do not over-tighten but rather simply "finger tighten" these connections. Do not use a heavy tool (such as a wrench) to tighten the fiber optic connectors as this might cause damage and result in operating problems. Improper and excessive tightening may impair data transmission. * The RPM-FSM is only available via special order Connecting Single-Mode Fiber Optic (SMF) When using the RPM-SMF, be sure to use single-mode fiber cable. Single-mode fiber cable has a smaller diameter than multi-mode Fiber cable (2/15-8/60 microns for singlemode, 50/125 or 62.5/125 microns for multi-mode where xx/xx are the diameters of the core and the core plus the cladding respectively). Because of this, single-mode fiber allows full bandwidth at longer distances, and may be used to connect nodes up to 10 Km apart. The same five-step procedure for multi-mode fiber ST-type applies to single-mode fiber connectors. Follow the five steps listed in Section above. 24
3.3 Replacement of PM Cards Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridges are factory configured with one RPM and one BPM of any specified Ethernet media type. However, as media requirements change, it is possible for a trained technician to replace one or both of these PM cards. The replacement procedure for PMs is described below. STOP!!! Be sure the power cord is unplugged from the chassis before attempting to remove and/or replace an PM card. Failure to do so may result in damage to the unit and will void the warranty. 1. Chassis Cover Removal Chassis Cover Remove the four screws located on the sides of the unit (two per side). Once removed the chassis cover is easily lifted off the chassis base, and the interior of the unit is exposed. Recessed Screw Holes 2. Retaining Screw Removal On either end of the unit there are two retaining screws for the PM card slot. These screws are used to secure individual PM modules. Remove the appropriate screws for the Port module to be replaced. Screw Holes Removal of chassis Cover Recessed Screw Holes End View - PM Retaining Screw Removal Port Module 25

4.0 OPERATION This chapter describes the function and operation of the Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge and its various Port Modules (PMs). 4.1 Workgroup Bridge Functionality The Magnum 30X Workgroup Bridge consists of one Repeater Port Module and one Bridge Port Module housed in a compact metal enclosure. When properly installed in a network, the RPM portion of the unit will behave as a repeater and forward all packets it receives in both directions. The BPM portion of the unit will make filter/forward decisions on a per-packet basis in order to reduce traffic across the bridged Ethernet segments. The functionality of the BPM is described here. 1. Bridge Functions: Each BPM card contains a compact local bridge module which filters and forwards packets at full Ethernet wire speed. These micro-bridges are self learning and have small (256 user) address tables. Packet filter/forward decisions are made based on whether the packet source is internal (originates within the local Magnum Hub/Stack segment) or external (originates from upstream on the attached Internal packets central network segment). If the packet s are forwarded when the destination is source is local / internal, it is forwarded to NOT IN the address table. the outside only if the destination address is FWD-X LED ON not in the address table. Figure 4.1a shows an internal packet being forwarded to the external segment. Figure 4.1a: Internal Packet Forwarded Figure 4.1b shows the case where an internal packet is filtered. When the packet s source is local / internal, it is contained to the inside of the BPM when the destination address is in the address table. Internal packets are filtered when the destination is IN the address table. Figure 4.1b: Internal Packets Filtered 27
