1 Avaya Solution & Interoperability Test Lab Application Notes for Infoblox DNSone in an Avaya IP Office IP Telephony Infrastructure Issue 1.0 Abstract These Application Notes describe the procedure for configuring the Infoblox DNSone module to provide DHCP and TFTP services in an Avaya IP Office IP Telephony Infrastructure. Information in these Application Notes has been obtained through compliance testing and additional technical discussions. Testing was conducted via the DeveloperConnection Program at the Avaya Solution and Interoperability Test Lab. 1 of 33

2 1. Introduction These Application Notes describe the configuration steps required for Infoblox DNSone to provide DHCP and TFTP services in an Avaya IP Office IP Telephony environment. The Infoblox DNSone module delivers integrated DNS, DHCP and TFTP services for Infoblox network identity appliances. It may be used as an integrated DNS/DHCP/TFTP server, external authoritative name server, forwarder, secondary server, caching-only name server, or DHCPonly server. Configuration of the DNSone module is done through a web-based graphical user interface. The DNSone module also provides security and reliability features. It minimizes unauthorized access by blocking unnecessary ports and not providing general user accounts (multiple administrative accounts are allowed). For increased reliability, two DNSone appliances may be deployed in a High Availability or DHCP Failover configuration. The configuration in Figure 1 shows a network consisting of the Avaya IP412 Office, Avaya 4600 and 5600 IP Telephones and Infoblox DNSone connected to an Avaya C363T-PWR Stackable Switch. The Avaya IP Telephones registered to the Avaya IP412 Office. The tested configuration is shown in Figure 1. 2 of 33

3 Figure 1 Sample Network Configuration Diagram Table 1 shows the DHCP Option 176 string settings the Infoblox DNSone DHCP server must provide for Avaya 4600 and 5600 IP Telephones to register with an Avaya IP Office. Configure the Avaya IP Office The configuration information provided in this section describes the steps required to disable DHCP services on the Avaya IP Office so that the Infoblox DNSone provides DHCP and TFTP services to the Avaya 4600 and 5600 IP Telephones in the configuration. For all other provisioning information, please refer to the Avaya IP Office product documentation in [1]. Step Description 1. Log into the IP Office Manager PC and go to Start Programs IP Office Manager to launch the Manager application. Log into the Manager application using the appropriate credentials. 2. In the Manager window that appears, select File Open to search for the IP Office system in the network. 3. Log into the IP Office system using the appropriate login credentials to receive its configuration. 4 of 33

5 4. In the Manager window, go to the Configuration Tree and double-click System. In the System tab of the System Configuration window that appears, verify TFTP Server IP Address is empty then select the LAN1 tab. 5. In the LAN1 tab window that appears, select Disabled for DHCP Mode and click OK. 6. In the Manager window, select File Save to save the configuration to the IP Office and wait for the system to update. This completes configuration of the Avaya IP Office. 5 of 33

Configure the Avaya IP Telephones The configuration information provided in this section describes the steps required to set up the Avaya 4600 and 5600 IP Telephones for DHCP in an Avaya IP Office IP Telephony Infrastructure. For all other provisioning information, please refer to the Avaya 4600 IP Telephone product documentation in reference [2]. Step Description 1. With the Avaya 4600 IP Telephone powered on and on-hook (idle), press the MUTE button and then press the following keys in sequence on the dial pad: 73738# (RESET#). 2. When prompted to Reset Values?, press the # key. This will reset any previously assigned values. When prompted to Restart Phone?, press the # key. 3. Repeat Steps 1 2 for each Avaya 4600 and 5600 IP Telephone depicted in Figure 1 except the Avaya 5601 IP Telephone. The 5601 IP Telephone is a non-display IP telephone and a different procedure is required to configure it. Please refer to the Avaya 4601 IP Telephone User s Guide in [3] for instructions, as the configuration procedure is the same for the This completes configuration of the Avaya 4600 and 5600 IP Telephones. 5. Configure the Avaya C363T-PWR Stackable Switch The configuration information provided in this section describes the steps required to enable DHCP relay on the Avaya C363T-PWR Stackable Switch. For all other provisioning information, please refer to the Avaya C363T-PWR Stackable Switch product documentation in references [4] and [5]. Step Description 1. Log into the C363T-PWR with the appropriate credentials via the console port or a telnet session. 2. Enter into router configuration mode: C360-1(super)# configure C360-1(configure)# C360-1(configure)# session router Router-1(configure)# 3. Enable DHCP relay: Router-1(configure)# ip bootp-dhcp relay 4. For each interface that connects to DHCP clients, specify the IP address of the DHCP server that will handle the DHCP requests received on the interface: Router-1(configure)# interface vlan1 Done! Router-1(config-if:vlan1)# ip bootp-dhcp server Done! Router-1(config-if:vlan1)# exit Done! 5. Repeat Step 4 for VLAN3 and VLAN6. This completes the configuration of the C363T- 6 of 33

7 Step Description PWR. 6. Configure the Infoblox DNSone The configuration information provided in this section describes the steps required to set up the Infoblox DNSone to provide DHCP and TFTP services to the Avaya 4600 and 5600 IP Telephones in an Avaya IP Office IP Infrastructure. For all other provisioning information, please refer to the Infoblox DNSone product documentation in reference [6]. The instructions that follow assume that the DNSone has already been configured with the appropriate network IP address, , via the console port Initial Login Setup Step Description 1. From a computer connected to the network, launch a browser and browse to Log into the Infoblox DNSone with the appropriate credentials. 7 of 33

8 2. If a Warning HTTPS popup such as the one pictured below appears, click Yes to proceed. 3. If a Warning Security popup such as the one pictured below appears, click Always. 8 of 33

9 4. In the Infoblox DNS Solution browser page that appears, the Appliance Startup Wizard is automatically launched on first time login. Click Next to proceed. 5. In the Infoblox End-User License Agreement wizard window that appears, click Next to accept the License Agreement. 9 of 33

10 6. In the Configure standalone appliance/ha pair wizard window that appears, select Standalone appliance and click Next. 10 of 33

11 7. In the Configure standalone ID node wizard window that appears, set IP Address to , Subnet Mask to , Gateway to , and Host Name to ns1.avaya.com. Click Next. 8. Click Next in the wizard windows that appear changing defaults as appropriate until the Confirm configuration settings window appears (not shown). Click Next. A message appears requesting the browser be shutdown. This completes initial configuration of the DNSone Configure TFTP Step Description Connect to the Infoblox DNSone 1. From the IP Office Manager PC, launch a browser and browse to Log into the Infoblox DNSone with the appropriate credentials (not shown). 2. If a Warning HTTPS popup appears (not shown), click Yes to proceed. 11 of 33

12 3. In the Infoblox DNS Solution page that appears, click the ADMINISTRATION tab on the top of the page. Upload files to the TFTP server root (/) directory 4. In the ADMINISTRATION page that appears (not shown), select the TFTP Data Management tab on the left side of the page. In the TFTP Data Management page that appears, click or highlight TFTP Files in the left hand pane. This is the TFTP server root directory. To upload the Avaya 4600 and 5600 IP Telephone files to the TFTP server root directory, click Upload in the menu bar located above the TFTP Data Management tab. 5. In the new browser window, Upload TFTP file, that appears, click Browse. 12 of 33

13 6. In the Choose file popup (not shown), browse to the folder on the PC where IP Office Manager is installed. The default installation directory is C:\Program Files\Avaya\IP Office\Manager. Select the first file with a.bin suffix in the directory and click Open. Note: All files in the Manager directory with a.bin suffix as well as the 46xxupgrade.scr and 46xxsettings.txt file are required for upload to the TFTP server. 7. In the Upload TFTP file folder page (not shown), click Upload. 8. Repeat Steps 4 7 for every file in the folder referenced in Step 6. Note 1: For the purposes of compliance testing both upgrading and downgrading Avaya IP Telephones using the DNSone TFTP server, two versions of IP Office Manager releases were used. The first version was located in the folder C:\Program Files\Avaya\IP Office\Manager and the other was copied to a folder C:\tmp\ipoffice_2135. Note 2: A special Infoblox admin Perl script was used to upload an entire directory s contents rather than one file at a time as currently available from the browser interface. The script was available in the password protected support area of the Infoblox web site and required customer registration. At Avaya s request, Infoblox has since created a data import tool that reportedly really simplifies TFTP file import. The tool can be downloaded from Sample screen shots of the tool sent by Infoblox are in Appendix A. Infoblox reports the TFTP data import tool s functionality will be integrated into the Infoblox browser interface in an upcoming release. Create subdirectories off the TFTP server root (/) directory 9. Go to the TFTP Data Management tab page, highlight or click TFTP FILES in the left hand pane and click Add on the menu bar located above the TFTP Data Management tab. 10. In the Add TFTP Directory popup that appears, set Directory name to the name of a directory to create under the root (/) directory of the TFTP server such as ipoffice. Click OK. 13 of 33

14 11. Repeat Steps 9 10 to create a subdirectory off the TFTP server root (/) directory called ipoffice_2135. Upload files to the TFTP subdirectories 12. To upload Avaya IP Telephone files to the ipoffice subdirectory on the TFTP server, go to the TFTP Data Management tab page, highlight or click the ipoffice subdirectory in the left hand pane (not shown) and click Upload in the menu bar located above the TFTP Data Management tab. 13. In the new browser window, Upload TFTP file (not shown), click Browse. 14. In the Choose file popup (not shown), browse to the IP Office Manager folder referenced in Step 6, select the first file in the directory and click Open. 15. In the Upload TFTP file folder page (not shown), click Upload. 16. Repeat Steps for every file in the IP Office Manager folder referenced in Step Repeat Steps to upload Avaya IP Telephone files from the ipoffice_2135 folder referenced in Step 8 to the ipoffice_2135 subdirectory on the TFTP server. Configure TFTP service on DNSone 18. From the Infoblox DNS Solution page, click the MANAGEMENT tab on the top of the page then select the Members tab on the left side of the page. 14 of 33

In the Members page that appears, browse to ID Grid Infoblox in the left hand pane, click or highlight the TFTP (Member TFTP Properties) service on the right hand pane then click Modify in the menu bar located above the Members tab. 20. In the Member TFTP Properties popup that appears, check Enable TFTP Service then click Add 21. In the Add Address popup that appears, select Network followed by , set Subnet Mask to , and for Permission, select Allow. Click OK. 15 of 33

16 22. In the Member TFTP Properties popup, click Add to add the next network. 23. In the Add Address popup that appears, select Network followed by , set Subnet Mask to , and for Permission, select Allow. Click OK. 16 of 33

17 24. Repeat Steps for the remaining networks listed in Table 1. Once all the networks have been added to the Allow TFTP request from:, click OK. 25. In the Infoblox DNS Solution page, click Restart Service. 17 of 33

18 26. In the Restart Service popup that appears, select Restart services (if needed) and click OK. This completes configuration of the DNSone TFTP server Configure DHCP Step Description Enable DHCP Server 1. From the Infoblox DNS Solution page, return to the MANAGEMENT Members tab, browse to ID Grid Infoblox in the left hand pane, click or highlight the DHCP (Member DHCP Properties) service on the right hand pane. 18 of 33

19 2. In the Member DHCP Properties page that appears, check Enable DHCP Server and click OK. 3. In the Members page that appears, click Restart Service. 19 of 33

20 4. In the Restart Service popup that appears, select Restart services (if needed) and click OK. Define Option In the MANAGEMENT Members tab, browse to ID Grid Infoblox in the left hand pane, click or highlight the DHCP (ID Grid DHCP Properties) service on the right hand pane and click Modify. 20 of 33

21 6. In the ID Grid DHCP Properties popup that appears, select the Custom Options tab. 7. In the Custom Options tab that appears, click Add 21 of 33

22 8. In the Custom Option popup that appears, select Option 176 in the Option pull-down menu, check Type Only, and click OK. 9. In the ID Grid DHCP Properties page, click OK. Create Networks to be supported by the DNSone 10. In the Members page that appears, select the Networks tab. 22 of 33

23 11. In the Networks tab that appears, select or click Networks in the left hand pane and click Add in the menu bar above the Networks tab. 12. In the Add Network popup that appears, set Network Address to , Subnet Mask to , Comment to Network x and click OK. 23 of 33

24 13. In the Networks page that appears, click or highlight the network added in the previous step and click Add in the in the menu bar above the Networks tab. 14. In the Add DHCP Range popup that appears, set Start Address to , set End Address to , and click Advanced 24 of 33

25 15. In the Advanced DHCP Range page that appears, check Override routers, enter , click Add and select the Custom Options tab. 16. In the Custom Options page that appears, check Override network custom options setting and click Add 17. In the Custom Option popup (not shown), select Option 176 from the Option pull down menu, set Value to the value for the Option 176 string for VLAN1 in Table 1 and click OK. 18. 26 19. In the Add DHCP Range popup, click OK. 20. Repeat Steps for the remaining networks listed in Table Once all the networks have been added, click Restart Service. 22. Interoperability Compliance Testing The interoperability compliance testing focused on verifying the Infoblox DNSone properly provided DHCP and TFTP services for Avaya 4600 and 5600 IP Telephones in an Avaya IP Office IP Telephony Infrastructure General Test Approach The general test approach was to connect different models of the Avaya 4600 and 5600 IP Telephones to different VLAN ports on the Avaya C363T-PWR Stackable Switch and verify that the Avaya 4600 and 5600 IP Telephones successfully receive responses to their DHCP and TFTP requests from the Infoblox DNSone Test Results All executed test cases completed successfully with the observations noted below: TFTP uploads are single file at a time Current implementation of TFTP server on DNSone limits file uploads to a single file at a time. During compliance testing, a special Infoblox admin Perl script was used to download an entire directory s contents rather than one file at a time. At Avaya s request, Infoblox has since created a data import tool that they report really simplifies TFTP file import. The tool can be downloaded from Sample screen shots of the tool sent by Infoblox can be found in Appendix A. Status: Infoblox reports the TFTP data import tool s functionality will be integrated into the Infoblox browser interface in an upcoming release. Infoblox TFTP logging is not available via the browser interface The Infoblox TFTP server does not provide logging through the standard monitoring logs available via the browser interface to the DNSone. Status: Infoblox reports improvements have been made to their Syslog capabilities to provide more messaging from their TFTP service. This should be available in an upcoming release. 8. Verification Steps The following steps may be used to verify the configuration between the DNSone and the Avaya 4600 and 5600 IP Telephones in an Avaya IP Office IP network. From each subnet/vlan, ping the DNSone and the Avaya IP Office and verify connectivity. In the DNSone browser interface, verify that the address scopes and their associated address ranges and options are specified according to the information listed in Table of 33

28 Power cycle or reset an Avaya 4600 or 5600 IP Telephone. Verify the Avaya IP Telephone obtains an IP address from the DNSone DHCP server. Verify the Avaya IP Telephone downloads either the 46xxsettings.txt or 46xxupgrade.scr files from the DNSone TFTP server in addition for firmware upgrade or downgrade files as appropriate. After the Avaya IP Telephone acquires configuration information, enter the extension and password when prompted. After the telephone comes up, press MUTE followed by 2337# (ADDR#) and verify that the assigned IP address, subnet mask, call server IP address and port, 802.1q tagging setting, and VLAN ID are correct. Repeat for each Avaya 4600 and 5600 IP Telephone being verified. Verify the Avaya 4600 and 5600 IP Telephones successfully register with the Avaya IP Office and calls can be successfully placed between extensions. To view all DHCP log messages on the DNSone, select the MONITORING tab at the top of the page. In the left hand pane, browse to ID Grid Infoblox of 33

29 To verify leased IP addresses on the DNSone, select the MONITORING tab at the top of the page then click DHCP in the menu bar under the MONITORING tab. 9. Conclusion These Application Notes describe the steps for configuring the Infoblox DNSone to provide DHCP and TFTP services in an Avaya IP Office IP Telephony Infrastructure. During compliance testing, the Avaya 4600 and 5600 IP Telephones in the network simultaneously obtained IP addresses and downloaded firmware for firmware upgrade and downgrade test scenarios. 11.
