1 Spectralink Handset Migration Path Details This is document is intended as a follow-on to the document: Considerations when Adding Spectralink 84-Series and PIVOT handsets to Avaya and Spectralink-branded 80-Series handsets. Please be sure to have read it before you start this one, as the first document contains specific information that is not repeated here. When adding Spectralink 84-Series and/or PIVOT handsets to networks that already contain Avaya 3641/3645/6120/6140 handsets or Spectralink 8020/8030 handsets there are two possible migration paths which are detailed in this document. For each of the five scenarios described on the following pages, we show the existing network diagram (with specific PBXs) and then diagrams for the two migration paths. In some of the migration paths, the existing handsets may need to be updated. The communications protocol might need to be modified, either by a handset software update or by adding a SIP enablement device (sometimes referred to as a gateway). The quality of service (QoS) mechanism may also need to be updated. Refer to Appendix A for complete instructions on how to update the handset. If the QoS mechanism on the handset is updated, then the QoS mechanism on the WLAN will also need to be updated to match what is used on the handset. 1

7 Appendix A: Instructions 1. Updating the current handset communication protocol from SRP to SIP Migration path 2 may require that the current handsets be updated to support SIP. This update can be accomplished by the following steps: Download the handset administration tool (HAT) from here Turn off the handset and place it in the handset cradle/dual charging stand Use HAT to change the handset protocol from SRP to SIP o Go to the Settings tab and set the protocol to SIP o Select the Show Settings Editor button o The Handset Settings Editor window will open o Select Read Handset button to import current handset settings o Select the Admin menu o Select Restore Defaults for option in the menu list and select SIP o Select Yes in the window that asks if you want to erase the configuration o Select Write Handset button to save settings to the handset 2. Updating the current handset quality of service (QoS) from SVP to WMM In order to change the QoS from SVP to WMM on the current handsets they must first have post 3.0 software installed on them. After the post 3.0 software is installed on the current handsets they can then be updated so they support WMM. This can be accomplished by the following steps: Download the handset administration tool (HAT) Turn off the handset and place it in the handset cradle/dual charging stand Install post 3.0 software (latest release is recommended) if it is needed on the current handset via the Firmware tab on the HAT main screen Use HAT to change the QoS to WMM o Go to the Settings tab and set the protocol to SIP o Select the Show Settings Editor button o The Handset Settings Editor window will open o Select Read Handset button to import current handset settings o Select the Network Config tab o Set QoS Type to WMM o Select Write Handset button to save the settings to the handset 3. Adding a SIP enablement platform When adding a SIP enablement platform it is generally connected to the legacy PBX via a T1/PRI connection. In order to do this a T1/PRI card will be needed in the legacy PBX. When this is done the configuration for the legacy PBX will need to be updated so the legacy PBX works properly with the SIP enablement platform and it is possible that some current features cannot be brought forward. This level of consultation and service should be within the skillset of the SIP enablement platform vendor and should be part of the end-user buying criteria. Due to the unique nature of this domain experience, Spectralink will not be providing these services. 7
