2 Addressing Small-Cell Backhaul Challenges Operators are extensively deploying small cells in order to expand the capacity of their mobile networks in urban areas. This fact brings out strong challenges for the backhaul network, namely: High-bandwidth connectivity at street level. Minimum-footprint equipment with visually-acceptable form in the urban environment. Scalability in terms of network size. Fast rollouts without using highly-skilled personnel. Backhaul that is based on Carrier Ethernet standards. In response to the operator needs, Intracom Telecom offers, an innovative deployment toolkit employing winning technologies that address all the aforementioned challenges in the most effective manner. Operating in licensed or unlicensed spectrum, fulfills any demanding requirement with regard to capacity, range and availability of the small-cell backhaul network, delivering best-in-class connectivity at street level.
3 StreetNode : Compact, Innovative & Powerful With a volume of just 4 lt. (including the embedded auto-aligned antenna), as well as special aesthetics, the all-in-one-box is designed to be mounted on a building s wall or a lamp post. Enabling highly-flexible backhaul topologies (see Fig. 1a and 1b), using PtP or PtMP architecture and microwave (MW) or millimeter wave (mmw) transmission technology, combines city overlay, maximizing single-link connections, with street-level extensions to incorporate hard-to-reach locations. is a carrier-grade system satisfying every critical aspect with regard to efficient Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G backhaul. It improves economics considerably and tackles the backhaul issue effectively by providing plenty of capacity, low latency, environmentally-friendly operation and high availability, also minimizing the operator s investment and operational complexity. Benefits Optimum frequency reuse the entire backhaul network operates over licensed and unlicensed spectrum (26/28/32/42/60 GHz). Easy-to-get installation permission - unobtrusively blends into the urban landscape. Software-defined radio, Point-to-Point (PtP) or Point-to-MultiPoint (PtMP) a single piece of hardware,, can fit anywhere within the backhaul network. Hardware installation and replacement convenience: Power supply options (AC / DC / PoE) Simple slip-fit mounting kit Field-replaceable power modules Bluetooth commissioning and zerotouch service provisioning with advanced SON features installer just plugs the power / traffic cable and automatically connects to the network within a few minutes. This mechanism is based on received signal measurements and is carried out automatically without any need for site visits. Overlay sector coverage Street-level extensions 4 functions as PtP unit, establishing street-level backhaul extension links. Street-level extension [Fig.2] combines overlay coverage and street-level extensions for optimum small-cell backhaul. 5 Optimizing Small-Cell Backhaul with StreetNode In a typical urban environment (see Fig. 2 on the left), buildings provide physical signal isolation among adjacent streets, enabling frequency reuse in the part of the backhaul network operating at licensed MW bands (26 / 28 / 32 / 42 GHz). is highly-flexible to function as a PtMP terminal, PtMP hub or PtP unit, reaching even challenging small-cell locations PTP, member of the V60-PTP series of V-Band products, is the mmwave version of the platform. It operates in the GHz area of the spectrum, inheriting all the innovations, features and functionality of its sibling MW variant, while incorporating further enhancements, such as automatic interference scanning. [Fig.4] relay locations (collocated orange and purple dots) and PtMP hubs (purple dots) extend the small-cell backhaul service to commercial streets. Green-shaded areas designate 1 st -hop connectivity, whilst yellow shades correspond to areas that can be connected through relay hops Depending on the variant used, leading throughputs of up to MHz (at MW frequencies) and up to MHz (at mmwave frequencies) can be achieved. Both variants can be combined in the same backhaul network to maximize performance and enhance cost-effectiveness, especially where link density is high. 2 2 This ideal synergy allows efficient delivery of carrier-grade connections, from the operator s points of presence (i.e. macro cells with existing backhaul) down to city streets, fulfilling current and future small-cell backhaul demands. 2 Fiber termination point [Fig.3] network simulation using 3D cartography and ATDI ICS Telecom ng RF planning tool. 6 Self-Organizing Network (SON) Management Overview small-cell backhaul networks are managed by the SON modules embedded in the uni MS Unified Management Suite. These cover the lifecycle of the backhaul network, offering cost of ownership and operation advantages. SON Configuration Features Integration of uni MS with RF planning tools. Pre-planning of network and services. Automatic discovery of the network. Assisted software update of devices. Automatic configuration of the network. Automatic provisioning of services. SON Optimization Features Definition of KPIs and thresholds based on RF Planning data. Pre-launch optimization to deliver a carrier-grade network through link connectivity fine-tuning and RF plan revisions. Continuous radio quality monitoring for interference, e.g. from advertising banners on lamp posts. Correlation of radio performance with weather data to identify rain fading. Misalignment identification and correction. LOS condition monitoring to propose re-location of equipment if needed. Automatic testing to enable fine-tuning of radio parameters. The uni MS SON Proxy The uni MS SON Proxy is an intelligent software running on an android device (tablet or smartphone), which: acts as an NMS proxy ; communicates online with uni MS ; is able to communicate offline through s / SMS; implements local configuration and monitoring; communicates with devices over Bluetooth; allows GPS-assisted identification of devices. SON Management Characteristics Automation High degree of automation, using Machineto-Machine (M2M) communication, eliminating human errors and speeding up installation and commissioning. Simplicity Simple and uncluttered user interface suitable for unskilled technicians carrying out installation and commissioning tasks. Actions are few and arranged in a flow, like a wizard. Manual: taking advantage of the simplicity and convenience of an android device to carry out Local Craſt Terminal actions over Bluetooth, in case of absence of NOC infrastructure. Highly-secure operating environment: Hardened and highly-secure unims SON Proxy app. Communication with the SON modules is over 3G/4G connection using VPN. Access to uni MS SON Proxy requires authentication. Secured, non-discoverable Bluetooth interface in user authentication is required. SON modules inheriting the highly- sophisticated security features of the uni MS Unified Management Suite. Tracking and logging of all actions user or M2M to enable security audits and troubleshooting.
